The NY Times will likely always exist in some form, but it is fading in relevance. It’s dying for a number of reasons, but mostly, it’s dying because the trend in how people consume news is rapidly changing. It’s no different to record companies and record stores managing the music business. The Times keeps trying to sell itself through online subscriptions but people simply won’t pay a cent for it. News is easily available elsewhere for free. Same deal with lesser outlets, like The Record. The other main reason is its content. The liberal bias might work on the Upper West Side, but not in Preoria. America is predominantly right-of-center, and The NYT, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and a whole host of what’s known as the mainstream media is losing market share and dying.

In wishing all our Readers , Friends and Neighbors a very Happy Easter.
“This year Sunday, April 20 is not only the day that Christians and Roman Catholics celebrate Easter, it is also the day this year that Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter – We are aligned on this special day in 2014!
This wonderfully colorful and joyous Holy Day, as most of you know, celebrates the Resurrection of Christ to Heaven three days after His crucifixion on Good Friday.
Easter is a celebration of hope and optimism in ourselves and in the world around us. It re-awakens us to the possibility that good things are possible in life and that by working with others we can accomplish much good.
Easter also celebrates the rebirth of the natural world around us. Winter’s dark, icy grip has finally relented – at least a little- and given way to the colorful spring flowers and budding trees.
I hope that you enjoy the wonders of Easter and share the day with the people who matter most in your life — the people you love and the people you love being with. ” (Bergen County Executive Kathy Donovan)

Bids for the cleanup project along Ridgewood’s natural bodies of water came in higher than officials anticipated, but the Village Council is expected to award the project contract at Wednesday’s meeting.
Earlier this spring, the governing body appropriated about $568,000 for watershed protection work at the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook and Saddle River; however, village officials said the lowest responsible bid was $115,000 more than they anticipated. Of the three bids that Ridgewood received, the lowest was $683,000, said Village Manager Kenneth Gabbert.
Gabbert previously told The Ridgewood News that the scope of the project includes rehabilitation work to reduce flooding at the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook and Saddle River. Contractors are expected to remove sandbars, gravel bars and other debris, such as tree stumps and large branches that have exacerbated flooding over the years.

Ridgewood NJ, The long delayed opening of the RHS/Stevens field bridge may finally be at hand . Ridgewood Schools Superintendent Daniel Fishbein said at Monday night’s BOE meeting that the bridge will be open in time for the Ridgewood High School graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 21.

The bridge connects Stevens Field to the main RHS campus and RHS Stadium . The bridge was found to be structurally damaged in late 2009. In November of 2011 the bridge was finally shut down to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Repairs cost the BOE approximately $85,000 .
The RHS bridge has been closed since November due to serious structural problems. Years of flooding, wear and tear and old age had finally taken its toll.. Repairs began in May , and as work proceeded it became apparent that the bridge needed far more work than originally anticipated. Bad weather and construction related delays have also pushed back the project.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
Behind The Stable on North Maple Avenue, beside the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook, there was once an aging headstone.
It wasn’t for a mother, father, daughter or son.
It was for a dog whose name – Friskie – was spelled out in pebbles pushed into the stone’s drying cement.
While the headstone may not be visible today, likely buried in the dirt after years of disturbance from construction and flooding, it was once a piece of Ridgewood history. According to a former Ridgewood resident who wrote a new book on The Stable’s history, Friskie used to belong to the man who owned the last working farm in Ridgewood – as well as the stable that eventually became the town’s community center.
This and other facts about The Stable’s more than 100-year-old history are explained and revealed in “Mr. Lester’s Farm,” a 32-page children’s book written by Joe Grasso.

Reauthorize and Reform the Flood Insurance Program
By David John
June 11, 2012
Congress should reauthorize and reform the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The failure of Congress to pass a longer term reauthorization since the last one expired in September 2008 has delayed necessary reforms. In addition, since there are no private providers of general flood insurance coverage in the United States, all such policies come through the NFIP. The lack of reauthorization is increasing risk to both flood-prone properties and the NFIP itself.
One of the goals of the pending reauthorization is to ensure that all owners pay the appropriate actuarial premium rather than subsidized rates. This would be a first step toward encouraging private insurance companies to enter the market and would set the stage for an eventual move of the entire program to the private sector.
