May 29, 2015

NEWTON, NJ – Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05) announced the winners of the 2015 Congressional Art Competition.  This year’s top honor went to Norwood resident and Academy of the Holy Angels student Na Young Lee for her piece, “Crammed.”  This year’s competition featured 95 student entries and was hosted at Sussex County Community College in Newton. Meagan Khoury and Sherry Fitzgerald, both of Sussex County Community College, judged the competition.  The winners were announced at a ceremony on Saturday, May 16th.

“Congratulations to the winners and participants of the 2015 Congressional Art Competition,” said Garrett.  “I am amazed at the quality of work produced by these students.  Each student should be very proud of their efforts, and I want to thank their parents and teachers for encouraging and cultivating such exceptional talent.”

The Congressional Art Competition is an annual event held in congressional districts across the country.  The first place winner from each congressional district will have his or her artwork displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol alongside winning artwork from other high school students across the country.  The second, third, and fourth place winners will have their submissions displayed in Congressman Garrett’s Glen Rock, Newton, and Washington, D.C. offices.  Click here for more information about the nation-wide contest.

Artist’s saw gives people something to see at Ridgewood Library

Manfred Wegner creates wooden cut-outs of historical sites, famous icons, family and other familiar faces.

The artist’s saw-cut scroll art is being shown at the Ridgewood Public Library’s Bolger Auditorium during the month of May.

Peter Mullany, a professor of English literature and a frequent visitor to the library, called the exhibit “quite fascinating” and “very impressive work.”

Wegner was introduced to scroll art when he was 6 years old by his father in Germany, but did not become seriously involved with it until two years ago. He moved to the United States from his native country in 1961.

He has worked with other forms of media, including watercolor, pencil drawings, paper cutting and photography. Wegner said he likes scroll art because it’s more hands-on.

His technique for scroll art begins by drawing an image he would like to re-create. He then transfers the image to plywood, using black marker to outline the areas he will cut out with an electric saw.

Wegner has created about 60 pieces this year – he made more than 100 last year.

SALUTE to Women in the Arts is presenting “World of Paper,” an exhibition by 22 members at the gallery at the West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood. The exhibition includes: painting, drawing, printmaking, paper constructions, collage, artist-made books, photography and computer-generated art on paper. Artists were challenged to use paper in interesting ways and have created works of differing subject matter using their individual approaches to make art that is exciting.

“Mother Teresa” by In Son”Across the Hudson” by Harriet Sobie Goldstein”Stonington” collagraph by Robin Fruchter”The Snook” by Nancy Atkins Peck”Monhegan grass” by Pauline Chernichaw

“This exhibit is an example of the high caliber of artwork created by our members,” said Harriet Sobie Goldstein, acting president of SALUTE.

Begun in New Jersey in 1974, SALUTE to Women in the Arts is a community of practicing artists who are located in Bergen County offering an environment in which artists can meet their peers, share ideas and experiences and make career contacts.

In Son described her watercolor “Mother Teresa” -“I thought about May, Mother’s Day and the show and I thought Mother Teresa would be a great subject.”

Also on display is Pauline Chernichaw’s “Monhegan Grass” an archival print/photograph. “On Monhegan Island in Maine there is the most incredible light reflecting on the grass. You get a summery feeling,” said Chernichaw.

‘Paint and sip’ trend combines happy hour with art class

THE RECORD

Capturing the essence of an image by applying paint to canvas often requires a stroke of divine inspiration – like a glass of pinot grigio, or two. Or three. Did someone say four?

Various cheeses help, too. Sliced Swiss, Muenster, sharp cheddar. Bunches of grapes. A blueberry pie. Katy Perry and Robin Thicke playing in the background. Nothing too excessive. Just the essentials any artist needs to bring a new work into the world.

Woodcliff Lake resident Nicollete Cothron exhibits model form in this Thursday night art class at Pinot’s Palette in downtown Ridgewood, one of many such venues in a growing trend that combines the discipline of an art class with the whimsy of happy hour. Her right hand never lets go of her paintbrush, while her left hand never lets go of her wine. “And I never stop talking, either,” she says, flanked by friends all in this together.

As she interchangeably sips and slathers, she follows along with the instructor and makes the beginning midnight-blue background sky that forms the foundation for Vincent Van Gogh’s classic painting “Starry Night.” Assistant instructors patrol the aisles of 50 students this particular sold-out Thursday night, reassuring those who are afraid they have messed up or are using the wrong color.

Art at Village Hall is next project

To the Editor:

Last week, The Ridgewood News featured photos from the fantastic Maroon & White Celebration of the Arts held at Ridgewood High School on March 12. The event was held in the beautiful new Learning Commons at the high school and featured musical performances from students, as well as various art displays. One of the evening’s highlights was the public opening for a permanent art display entitled “Ridgewood Art at RHS.” This collection was curated by the Ridgewood Arts Council (RAC) and features work donated by artists who have a connection to Ridgewood. According to RHS principal Dr. Thomas Gorman, the public is invited to view all the art in the Learning Commons, with the optimal time being after school so as not to disturb students.

Dovetailing on the positive response the “Ridgewood Art at RHS” collection has received from artists and the viewing public, RAC is using it as a model for its next endeavor, “Ridgewood Art at Village Hall.” The purpose of both these collections is to celebrate the wealth of artistic talent in Ridgewood. RAC welcomes artists, 16 years and older, with a connection to Ridgewood, to send an email to rac@ridgewoodnj.net (subject line: RAC Art Donation) indicating interest. Posthumous submissions from family members are also welcome.

Each respondent will be sent by return email an official application form with further instructions and selection criteria guidelines. Art can be in any medium and any size – fine art, photography, textile and mobile arts, and sculpture included. The deadline for final submissions has been extended, so all interested parties are encouraged to email rac@ridgewoodnj.net ASAP for application. Once the installation is in place, the entire community will be invited to a gala launch event celebrating RAC and this new chapter of honoring the arts in Ridgewood!

Cheers to the Arts in Ridgewood!

Medy Bozkurtian’s “Spring Fever” exhibit at the Ridgewood Public Library evokes renewal and hope, something the artist feels we all need.

Enjoying the exhibit earlier this week was a familiar pastel artist from the village, Ethel Jamroz.

“My mother and I stop in every month – we enjoy the art shows,” said Nancy Jamroz.

The 26 watercolor and oil paintings represent some of Bozkurtian’s favorite places from her travels. “Provence Poppies” and “Mediterranean Vista” were inspired by France, “Capri Corner” and “Hills of Tuscany” by her many trips to Italy and “Café on Lake Lucerne” by Switzerland.

“After the Rain” and “Morning Walk” are two of her latest paintings. They were done after she returned last year to Bulgaria where she was born. They depict scenes in the historic section of Plovdiv, one of the oldest cities in Europe with a 6,000-year history.

“Having escaped Communism in the 60s, it was an emotional experience for me to return to a free Bulgaria after so many years,” she said. She sketched there and then painted the scenes in watercolor when she returned home.

“Being of Armenian descent, I also painted scenes like ‘Welcoming Committee’ in a mountain valley in Armenia with an old church in the background,” she said. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide said the artist noting that it is close to her heart.

Celebrate poetry

To the Editor:

Here is an invitation to our friends and neighbors to celebrate National Poetry Month in April 2015.

Established by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, it is the largest literary celebration in the world with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers and poets celebrating poetry’s vital place in our culture.

Visit poets.org and learn the many ways you can celebrate with your family and friends, and sign up for a “poem in your pocket” day, April 30. Many of our New Jersey teachers will be having “dear poet” projects.

Special treat on Tuesday, April 7 at 1:15 p.m. at the Ridgewood Public Library, The College Club of Ridgewood will bring Renée Ashley, one of our best known New Jersey voices and popular nationally recognized New Jersey poet. She is a beloved member of Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Graduate low residency program in Creative Writing and Literature and will present “The Magical Art of Reaching Into Us,” telling her poetry story and sharing poems with our members and friends to come. Join us.

And for those who have enjoyed New Jersey Geraldine A. Dodge Foundation’s Poetry Festivals, Ashley will be joining with other New Jersey poets at “Jersey Voices: Rediscovering the Poetry State,” on April 24 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m.

Artists Lou Spina and Joyce Levine both live in Washington Township and are members of the Pascack Art Association. This month they are displaying their talents together in an “Art X’s Two” exhibit at the Stable Art Gallery in Ridgewood.

Levine says that even though she has been painting for many years, she is still compelled and motivated to create new and different pieces of art.

“I am very inquisitive by nature and my interests allow me to paint in many mediums – in oil, watercolor, pastel, and with collage as well.” She keeps her eyes fresh to explore new ideas and concepts.

“Art transports me, and every day problems seem to fade away when I am painting,” she said. “I am very lucky to be able to create paintings that nourish me and bring joy to others.”

For Stan Cohen, art is an extension of life.

“It is fulfilling an outlet for expression for my emotional feelings,” he said. His watercolor and collage artwork reflect his wide interests in science, human endeavor and travel and can be seen at the West Side Presbyterian Church Art Gallery through April 1.

The former longtime Ridgewood resident has lived in Glen Rock for the past eight years. Along with his wife, Yvonne, he is a familiar figure in the local arts community. Yvonne served as concert mistress of the Ridgewood Symphony and taught Suzuki violin in her home studio for many years. The three Cohen children, Valerie, Danielle and Alain, all went through the Ridgewood schools.

Cohen’s life has been devoted to math running his own mathematical/statistical research company. But even when working and traveling abroad, he always found time to visit museums and explore art. He started painting seriously with a watercolor workshop in the Ridgewood Community School and went on to study at the Ridgewood Art Institute with Joel Popadics.

For 41 years, from shortly after the purchase of the old Cameron Barn until his death in 1991, Arthur Maynard was the most constant fixture of The Ridgewood Art Institute. An immensely talented artist and teacher, his influence has been an ongoing source of inspiration. He taught thousands of students, 30 winning awards at the national level, with more than 20 becoming instructors at R.A.I.

A new exhibit of his paintings is opening this coming Sunday. Composed mainly of portraits, the new acquisitions are a gift of Alison Baetzel, Maynard’s daughter. The highly autobiographical work exhibited in this collection, which spans a period from 1933 to 1990, reveals a great deal about the artist’s perspectives, generosity and life. The paintings include subject matter that the artist cared about deeply. Since many of the works were in progress, the paintings suggest experimentation, evolution, dialogue. They also offer a rare view of Maynard’s work as a student at the Art Students League under the direction of Frank Vincent DuMond.

Less than a year after the village breathed new life into the Ridgewood Arts Council, RAC members are ready to return the favor.

The municipality’s official organization for the arts has set its sights on an ambitious but achievable goal, one that will end with the installation of a permanent public art display throughout Village Hall.

Titled “Ridgewood Art at Village Hall,” the idea for the permanent art exhibit comes on the heels of the success of Ridgewood High School’s Learning Commons display. Resident Linda Bradley was one of the volunteers who played an instrumental role in the RHS project.

“I was curating art for the Learning Commons. The art I was amassing was from Ridgewood residents,” Bradley said. “I got pulled over to be a part of the [RAC] because there was a lot of interest in the Learning Commons. We wanted to continue that visibility and celebration of the arts.”

Rep. Garrett congratulates Old Tappan Resident Soyoung Park for taking first place in the 2014 Congressional Art Competition

Rep. Scott Garrett announces the 2015 Congressional Art Competition has begun, and I am currently accepting submissions in my New Jersey district offices.

Ridgewood NJ, The Congressional Art Competition is sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives, and it is open to all 9th-12th graders. The first-place winner from each congressional district is invited to attend a reception in Washington, D.C., and the winning artwork is displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year.

Attached, you will find the 2015 guidelines and the Student Release form. All applicants must live in New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District to participate. Students who wish to submit artwork in the competition must do so by Friday, April 24, 2015.  All artwork must be labeled clearly on the back with the artist’s name, address, phone number, title of piece, and medium. A typed copy of the Student Release form, signed by both the teacher and the student, must be attached to the back of the artwork to certify the originality of the piece.

Although the competition does not require artists to frame the artwork unless they win, we strongly encourage all participants to frame the artwork according to the guidelines and to attach a wire to the back for hanging. If the student is unable to frame the artwork, it should still be covered and a wire should be attached on the back, so it can be displayed with the rest of the artwork.

This year, the reception will be held at Sussex County Community College. My staff will forward details about the reception as soon as they are available. All students, parents, and teachers will be invited to the reception.

Artwork may be dropped off at my Eastern District Office, 266 Harristown Road, Suite 104, Glen Rock (201-444-5454) or my Western District Office, 83 Spring Street, Suite 302A, Newton (973-300-2000) between now and April 24. Please call in advance to let my staff know you will be dropping off the artwork.

I sincerely hope you will consider participating in this wonderful opportunity. Please do not hesitate to contact Christina Garfinkle at my Eastern District Office at (201) 444-5454 if you have additional questions.
