Is gambling legal in New Jersey?

New jersey has a long and varied history when it comes to gambling. Up until 1844 lotteries were common in the state. IN fact, it was funds from lotteries which helped to pay for military aid during the French and Indian war. The funds also helped support the American Revolution.

Several universities such as Queens College (now Rutgers University) and the College of New Jersey (now Princetown University) were also recipients of lottery funds.

The oldest racetrack in the US is the Freehold Raceway which has been there since 1830, while the Monmouth Park Raceway started in 1870. In 1894 New Jersey Legislature banned horse racing and in 1897 all gambling of any kind was banned in the state of New Jersey.

In 2013 the state started to allow in-state online gambling and five years later they won a lawsuit permitting legal sports betting.

So, what types of gambling are now legal in New Jersey?

The gambling industry in the state of New Jersey has grown to include not only ‘brick and mortar’ gambling places but also now includes sports betting, fantasy sports, online gambling, horse racing and more.

These days you can find all the major forms of gambling legally in the state and several of them are also legally online .

Legal gaming includes:

Horse racing betting Bingo
Casinos
Poker
Games of skill
Lottery
Fantasy sports

All of these are legal to be played online and in person at various casinos and other locations.

Casinos in New Jersey

After the legalisation of gambling in New Jersey came into force in February 2013 a law stated that each of the casinos was permitted to partner with a software provider to offer gambling choices to players within the state lines.

This encouraged casinos to launch gambling sites, giving players a multitude of gaming choices these days. Casinos also started to offer top casino bonuses as a way to attract clientele to new casinos.

This means that every ‘brick and mortar casino in the state will likely have its own online casino offering a variety of games for players.

Resorts International on Atlantic City Boardwalk was the first legal casino to open in the US outside the city of Nevada.

Right now, New Jersey is home to ten land-based casinos, all of them located in Atlantic City.

Horse racing and betting in NJ

All horse racing betting is now regulated by the New Jersey Racing Commission. They are responsible for issuing licenses and overseeing the racing industry.

Betting on horse racing is legal at racetracks, licensed betting sites and authorised off-track betting places.

There are two betting operators permitted to offer mobile and online horse racing betting in the state, namely 4NJBets.com and Betfair Exchange NJ.

Favourites at Gloucester

Sports betting in NJ

New Jersey was one of the first states to offer ports betting in 2018. Mobile sports betting sites are also regulated in the same way online gambling and land-based casinos are, so need to hold sporting licenses and be partnered with legal software providers to operate.

Poker is now also permitted and is widely available at most land-based casinos. Online poker is only allowed on sites which are licensed by the NJDGE. Any land-based casino can offer poker to their customers.

You can find legal in-person poker rooms at several Atlantic City casinos, one of the major ones being the Borgata Casino which has dozens of tables and high-stake cash games. The Borgata also hosts several major tournaments through the year.

It is unfortunate that if you live outside Atlantic City, poker is not available as there are no other licensed poker rooms in the state.

Bingo in NJ

Bingo is legal in the state of New Jersey where land-based casinos and gaming sites run bingo games as a normal part of their business. It is also accepted where non-profit organisations host the game to raise money for their charities.

There is a slight difference in the New Jersey method of Bingo where they play 90-ball bingo instead of the traditional 75-ball game. The format and rules are the same.

New Jersey Lotteries

The NJ lottery was first approved and made legal in 1969 and the first drawing was held in 1971.

The NJ lottery offers a mixture of scratch tickets and draw games and the revenue is used to help educational services, centres for the disabled, homes for disabled soldiers and psychiatric hospitals.

An important thing to note is that online lottery ticket sales are not permitted in the state of New Jersey. You must purchase your lottery tickets from an authorised retailer in person.

There is a good selection of lottery games to play, with prizes ranging from $200 to upwards of $100,000. Some are drawn daily, others weekly. Prizes vary with several of the higher paid lottery games.

To sum up

While you may need to head to Atlantic City if you want a land-based casino to visit, you will find plenty of online casinos which you can legally enjoy from the comfort of your own home, at any time you like!

Trenton NJ, The state’s goal to move to 100% clean energy by 2050 will be put at risk if the state’s final Energy Master Plan (EMP) relies exclusively on intermittent power sources such as wind and solar energy, NJBIA testified Thursday.

NJBIA Vice President Ray Cantor said solar and wind energy need to be supported by clean natural gas and nuclear power in order to ensure that New Jersey homes and businesses have energy that is affordable, abundant and reliable.

Over 400 Businesses Line Up for NJEDA’s Offshore Wind Supply Chain Registry

Atlantic City NJ, Illustrating a strong appetite for the Garden State’s expanding offshore wind industry, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) today announced that more than 400 businesses have joined the state’s Offshore Wind Supply Chain Registry since it launched less than five months ago.

The NJEDA, through its Office of Economic Transformation (OET), has been working closely with the Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) and other agencies on the Offshore Wind Task Force to expand New Jersey’s offshore wind industry. A consistent piece of feedback throughout this process has been a desire for a comprehensive list of New Jersey-based companies that established offshore wind companies can partner with or purchase from as they advance projects in the state.

During the 2018 Labor Day holiday period, two of the seven fatal crashes in New Jersey involved impairment from alcohol or drugs as a contributing factor. If you plan on drinking alcohol this weekend, don’t make a bad decision by getting behind the wheel. Tragedies can be avoided by calling a taxi, using transportation applications such as Uber and Lyft, having a designated driver, or making plans to stay where you are.

Sea Isle City NJ, On Saturday, August 3, Detective Sergeant First Class George Wren was vacationing with his family in Sea Isle City, N.J. when he rescued a swimmer who was caught in a riptide and being pulled into the ocean.

Moments after explaining the dangers of the rip current to his children, a woman frantically approached DSFC Wren and screamed that a man was drowning. He observed the man about 75 yards from the shoreline drifting further into the ocean.

Twenty People Charged in Connection with Jersey Shore Drug Ring

Asbury Park NJ, Twenty people have been charged for their roles as members, associates, and suppliers of a drug-trafficking conspiracy that distributed cocaine and crack cocaine in the Monmouth County, New Jersey, area, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced today.

Nineteen defendants were arrested today and one remains at large. They are charged with conspiracy to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine or 280 grams or more of crack cocaine (See chart below). The defendants arrested today are scheduled to have their initial appearances this afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lois H. Goodman in Trenton federal court.

OCEAN TOWNSHIP NJ, After Governor Phil Murphy allowed months of lost business and income for people who rely on the summer rental season, Assembly candidates Matt Woolley and Mike Amoroso are relieved to hear an 11.625 percent tax passed last year has been repealed. Woolley and Amoroso are challenging Assemblywoman Joann Downey and Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling in the 11th legislative district.

NJGOP Chairman Calls On Murphy To Return Shore Rental Tax Revenue

Ridgewood NJ, Governor Murphy has announced that he will be eliminating the shore rental tax going forward. The Governor has admitted that the tax was an unnecessary burden and many people say that mom and pop rentals were inadvertently taxed. The NJGOP has been repeatedly calling for the end of the shore rental tax .

NJGOP Chairman Doug Steinhardt released the following statement:

“Governor Murphy has admitted he made a mistake, but now it’s time to rectify that mistake. He must refund the money to the mom and pops who were forced to pay his shore rental tax this summer. Otherwise, it’s safe to assume it was intentional, and another democratic money grab no different than when Murphy tried to steal $33M from the firemen’s burial and hardship fund. Here’s the Governor’s chance to put his money where his mouth is, or better yet, back in the wallets of the moms and pops he took it from.”

Governor Waits till the second week in August to repeal new renters tax

Ridgewood NJ, Governor Phil Murphy today signed legislation (A-4814) amending the transient accommodations law enacted last summer to provide relief for many shore renters by narrowing the scope of rentals that are subject to taxation. The administration conducted a thorough legal and technical review to ensure that the legislation, as written, was not only feasible to implement, but more closely mirrors the original intent, which was to create parity throughout the rental industry by extending the existing tax on hotels and motels to certain short-term rentals, such as those done through online marketplaces. “Our shore economy adds tremendous vitality and dynamism to New Jersey,” said Governor Murphy.

Shore Rental Tax Relief Nowhere in Sight

Ocean City NJ, Legislation that would relieve the costly consequences of a tax on short-term rentals that was imposed by Governor Phil Murphy last year continues to sit on the governor’s desk while evidence of the tax’s damage to the Jersey Shore economy mounts.

Senator Jim Holzapfel and Assemblymen Greg McGuckin and Dave Wolfe (all R-Ocean) say they are frustrated by the delay and are calling on the Murphy administration to enact the bill before it’s too late for the summer season.

Menendez Urges Aggressive Action from the Dangers of Flying Beach Umbrellas

MANASQUAN NJ, A year after a tourist was impaled by a flying beach umbrella at the Jersey Shore, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) stood on the beach in Manasquan to call on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) to take more aggressive action to protect beachgoers from the dangers of wind-swept beach umbrellas that can cause serious injury or even death. On July 16, 2018, a beach umbrella took off with a gust of wind in Seaside Heights, N.J., and speared the woman in the leg. In 2016, a woman in Virginia Beach was killed by a beach umbrella that got caught in the wind and struck her in the chest. Last month, a toddler was nearly impaled by a flying beach umbrella in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Public Health Alert: Potential Measles Exposures in Ocean County

Lakewood NJ, The New Jersey Department of Health is warning residents about another confirmed case of measles in an Ocean County resident who potentially exposed individuals in Ocean County between July 10 and July 12.

Anyone who visited Congregation Belz, 18 Prague Place, Lakewood, NJ 08701 during the following dates/times may have been exposed to measles:

July 10 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
July 11 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
July 12 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The Department is working in collaboration with the Ocean County Health Department to identify and notify people who might have been exposed during the time the individual was infectious. For a current list of measles exposures, please visit the Department’s measles page.
