With the wheels now in motion for a year, officials say the Tri-Boro Shuttle, which provides a free roundtrip commute from the Ridgewood Train Station to the corporate office buildings in Park Ridge, Woodcliff Lake and Montvale, is starting to pick up some steam.
Ridership has experienced a steady month-to-month uptick since last year, according to recent statistics provided by Montvale Councilwoman Leah LaMonica.
The councilwoman said this year’s tally, compared to last year has increased by at least 200 passengers in March, April and May to 409 in March, 467 in April, and 416 in May. Despite a decrease of 104 riders in June as compared to last year, LaMonica said she attributes it to vacation season. She added the tallies don’t “deviate much except for winter months,” including January and February

More North Jersey towns follow Ridgewood ‘s lead and invest in lightning detection systems

Lightning strikes are “a very real danger that people need to be aware of,” says Westwood Mayor John Birkner.
Birkner has been researching lightning detection systems for his town, which is looking to join the growing number of New Jersey communities that already have such systems in place, sounding alarms when dangerous storms are near.
Last year 28 people nationwide were killed by lightning, including three in New Jersey, the second highest number for any state, data show. One lightning victim was a Haworth man struck and killed as he watched his grandson play soccer in Demarest. The other two died on the beach in separate incidents at the Jersey Shore.
In 2006, the previous year New Jersey had three lightning deaths, two were teenagers killed on a soccer field in Montvale.
Detection systems monitor lightning strikes and warn the public when potentially dangerous storms fall within a certain radius of the area. The system typically sets off alarms that have been installed at fields and playgrounds, warning the public to leave those open areas. The system also gives an all-clear signal when the danger has passed.
Cresskill recently installed a lightning detection system, Tenafly is seeking bids for a system for its municipal and school fields, and Westwood is considering a joint purchase of a system with Emerson and Washington Township.
A consortium of eight schools and seven towns in the Northern Valley is solidifying plans for a cooperative purchase of a $200,000 lightning detection system.
Communities including Wayne, Rutherford, Ridgefield, Dumont, Ridgewood and Ho-Ho-Kus already have systems in place.

Parents, Coaches: Know the Risks of Concussions in Youth Sports The Valley Hospital is Offering Concussion Testing
February 27, 2013
Ridgewood NJ, To assist parents and coaches in protecting young athletes from the serious head injuries that can result from returning to play too soon after a suffering a concussion, The Valley Hospital Sports Institute offers the ImPACT Concussion Management Test. ImPACT (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is an innovative computerized evaluation system that assesses the effects and severity of a concussion and helps determine when it is safe for an athlete to return to contact sports following a concussion.
ImPACT testing is suitable for athletes ages 12 and older. It is a 20-30 minute neurocognitive test battery that has been scientifically validated to measure the effects of sports-related concussion. Typically, in the preseason each athlete is given a baseline test. And, when a concussion is suspected during the season, a follow-up test is administered to see if the results have changed from the baseline. This comparison helps to diagnose and manage the concussion. Follow-up tests can be administered over days or weeks so clinicians can continue to track the athlete’s recovery from the injury.
The Sports Institute recently enhanced its Concussion Management Program with the addition of the Biodex Biosway Balance testing unit. The test takes about 5 minutes and provides a psycho-motor assessment of concussion injuries. Athletes should be tested in the preseason to gather baseline information that can be used for comparison in the event of a concussion to assess the extent of the injury and the athlete’s readiness to return to activity.
Since most high schools in the area have the testing in place already, the Sports Institute is providing this service primarily for the recreation and town-sponsored youth sports teams for athletes ages 12 and older.
The next scheduled baseline testing sessions will take place on Thursday, March 21. Two sessions will be held at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Valley’s Kraft Center, located at 15 Essex Road in Paramus. The tests will be conducted in the 3rd Floor Computer Lab.
Pre-Registration is required, as space is limited. The fee is $25. Space is limited. Please call 201-447-8133 for more information and to register.
A concussion is a brain injury. Concussions are most commonly caused by a bump or blow to the head, but, can also be caused by a sudden deceleration or acceleration of the head. In either scenario, the brain, suspended inside the skull and surrounded by fluid, continues to travel with momentum until it “bangs” up against the skull – causing a brain-bruising injury – or concussion. What may seem to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious.
You can’t see a concussion. Signs and symptoms of a concussion can show up right after the injury, or may not appear or be noticed until days or weeks after the injury. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the symptoms yourself, seek medical attention right away. Common symptoms include: headache, dizziness, feeling foggy, nausea, fatigue and confusion. Common signs include memory loss, a loss of balance and coordination, and changes in personality. Concussion severity varies widely, and the number of signs and symptoms vary also – serious injuries may show few symptoms.
Although less common, bleeding in the brain can occur with some head injuries. Loss of consciousness, mental status deterioration and worsening symptoms raise the concern for a bleeding injury. An athlete does not need to lose consciousness (black out) to suffer a concussion. In fact, less than 10 percent of concussed athletes lose consciousness.
An athlete who suffers a concussion can be at risk for a condition known as Second Impact Syndrome if he or she returns to sports before full recovery. Second impact syndrome is a life-threatening condition in which a second concussion occurs before a first concussion has properly healed, causing rapid and severe brain swelling. Second impact syndrome can result from even a very mild concussion that occurs days or weeks after the initial concussion.
“Second Impact Syndrome can be prevented,” Donald Tomaszewski, Director of The Valley Hospital Sports Institute. “Don’t allow an athlete to return to sports after a concussion until their symptoms have completely resolved and they have been cleared by a medical professional experienced in treating concussions.”
Few DWI charges over New Year’s, North Jersey police say

North Jersey law enforcement rang in the New Year with just a few motorists in custody on charges of driving while intoxicated.
Most police departments in Bergen and Passaic counties reported no DWI arrests Tuesday.
The Palisades Interstate Parkway Police arrested a juvenile on drunken driving charges, Garfield and Saddle Brook also logged one arrest each, while Fair Lawn officers took two drivers into custody overnight.
“It’s hard to really say why,” said Garfield Lt. Tim Brutosky, referring to the low number of arrests in town. “People are having parties all over the place, I guess it’s a matter of fate. We are out there patrolling, but I guess everyone was lucky last night.”
Troopers from the state police barracks in Bloomfield, who patrol the Garden State Parkway from Woodbridge to Montvale, arrested three people on DWI charges during the night, said Trooper Ian Rosenberg.
Sgt. Adam Grossman, public information officer for the New Jersey State Police, said statewide figures on DWI arrests wouldn’t be tallied until after 6 a.m. today, the end of the holiday period. But he said more troopers were patrolling the highways and were on the lookout for drivers who may have been driving drunk.

Spend a while at Pascack Hills High School in Montvale, one of the first in New Jersey to hand every student a laptop, and you’ll likely hear a teacher tell students to “forty-five it.”
That means closing laptops halfway during a lesson — to a 45-degree angle — so they aren’t tempted to surf the Internet, check email or shop for shoes. It’s one of many techniques savvy teachers are adopting to keep the attention of a generation easily sidetracked by an unprecedented bounty of technology.
As a growing number of schools let iPads, laptops and cellphones enter the classroom, some teachers say they’re shouldering a new role as electronics police. Teachers warn constantly that abused devices will be confiscated. Some continually roam behind the back row to see who is watching what. And in a step that smacks of Big Brother, some have programs that monitor all their students’ screens at the same time, and shut off the computer of anyone goofing off.
Ridgewood NJ, Full power has been restored to The Valley Hospital and the Luckow Pavilion. Further information about additional off-site locations will be issued later today.
For staff and others planning to attend tonight’s APN Fashion Show at The Venetian, that event has been canceled. We will notify all of a new date as soon as we have firmed up the date. Hold your tickets.
Valley Health Medical Group centers in Wayne, Hawthorne, Montvale, and Dumont are open today, November 1. All other centers remain closed at this time.

>Village and schools would partner to install lightning detection system in Ridgewood
MONDAY, APRIL 16, 2012 BY EVONNE COUTROS STAFF WRITER THE RECORD
RIDGEWOOD — A lightning detection system could be installed at Graydon Pool and some of the sports fields in town if the Village Council agrees that the equipment will benefit the public.
Some of the components of the system, which has already been tested at Veterans Field, are in hand. It was purchased seven months ago through the school district, Mayor Keith Killion said. A presentation and demonstration of the system will follow Wednesday’s public meeting on the budget and will allow the council to determine if the system is worthwhile.
Many towns and county facilities have installed lightning detection systems on fields and golf courses in recent years. East Rutherford bought a system five years ago. Dumont and Wayne installed systems two years ago for $29,000 and $31,000, respectively. Teaneck installed a system in 2009. Other towns have followed suit, following the deaths in 2006 of two teenagers leaving a soccer field in Montvale.
“The device works off a national grid — similar to television weather channels where lightning strikes are recorded,” Killion said. “The system has rotating lights and it allows coaches to receive emails of impending lightning.”
It detects lightning activity within 20 miles and lightning strikes within 10 miles, Killion said.
