Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood Board of Education Answers Questions on Full-Day Kindergarten Program. Full-Day Kindergarten will run 8:30am -3pm, the average tax increase is $111 per home and there will be 22 students per class.

FAQ: Shifting to a Full-Day Kindergarten Program in Ridgewood

● Why is the District considering a full-day program after years of a successful half-day program? ○ The definition of success has shifted with the times, and although Ridgewood has a high-quality Kindergarten program, it is rushed and lacks adequate time for structured socialization and free play. Students who encounter more structured play around learning will better internalize that learning because at this age, play is how children learn. Additionally, social skills such as executive functioning and self-regulation of behavior are learned through play, often which is unstructured. A half-day program does not allow time for these essential learning opportunities for our students.
● How will the curriculum of a full-day program differ from that of the half-day program? ○ A full-time program will include more time for learning centers, which are essentially structured play experiences designed to reinforce conceptual learning. Additionally, more time will be dedicated to free-play centers, in which students make up rules to self-created games and make-believe. This free-play socialization will be supervised by, not structured by, adults. Another change to the day is that students will remain in school for lunch and will have snack and extended time for key content such as shared reading and writing.
● What would be the daily schedule and hours of a full-day program? ○ Kindergarten will run on the same schedule as the other grades in the school (8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.). A daily schedule is currently under development with the goal of sharing it with the public at an upcoming Board of Education meeting.
● How many other districts still have half-day Kindergarten programs? ○ Ridgewood is the only half-day program left in Bergen County. There are very few districts left in the state with a half-day program. The most common Kindergarten programs offer five full-days of school.
■ Those districts which were half-day have mostly moved to full-day programs in the last five years.
● In 2014, 73% of programs statewide were full-day. The percentage was even higher in Bergen County, where 65 out of 72 districts (about 90%) offered full day programs. Since 2014, Glen Rock, Fairlawn, Rutherford, Mahwah, Waldwick and Midland Park have moved to full-day.
● Currently, Ramsey offers a kindergarten enrichment extended day program and both Allendale and Wyckoff offer a modified half/full day program with two half-days in combination with three full days, but this model is also not very popular. ● Would parents be required to enroll their children for the entire day if Ridgewood moved to full-day Kindergarten? ○ Yes, if the Ridgewood Public School district shifts to a full-day Kindergarten program, all enrolled students will be registered for 5 full days each week.
● Where will Kindergarten children eat lunch? ○ This will be a building-by-building decision, based on space and what the principal deems best for the program in their building.
● Will Kindergarten students have recess with all other students and how will their recess be supervised? ○ Kindergarten students would have more than one “recess” play time in their schedule. The schedule, location, and supervision of that recess would depend on individual building schedules. However, in all buildings the recess/lunch period of 45 minutes would be extended to one hour for Kindergarten students. Classroom teachers would supervise the additional 15 minutes at the end of recess to settle students down and prepare them for afternoon learning sessions.
● What are the anticipated class sizes for a full-day program? ○ The Ridgewood Board of Education guidelines for Kindergarten are 22 children per classroom.
● How will the decision be made to move to full-day Kindergarten in Ridgewood? ○ On Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, Ridgewood voters will be asked to approve full-day K in the District. This vote will be done in the form of a “second question” on the ballot. All residents who are registered voters may participate. Voter registration forms may be found at on the Bergen Count website at https://www.co.bergen.nj.us/DocumentCenter/View/1224.
● What is the purpose of a second question on a ballot? ○ A second question can only be placed on the ballot when a school district is asking for something new, such as full-day Kindergarten or a new program. Since the costs of these additional services and associated personnel can exceed the state-imposed 2% cap on budget increases, the public must vote on them.
● What would be the tax impact on a “yes” vote for the second question on full-day Kindergarten? ○ The average Village assessed home of $693,904 would have taxes increase by approximately $111 if FDK were passed.
● Is there any possibility that the State will require Districts to provide full-day Kindergarten? ○ This is not known at this time.
● Where can I go for more information on Full-Day K in Ridgewood? ○ Full-Day K information may be found on the Curriculum page of the District website at www.ridgewood.k12.nj.us.

The Fairness Formula and the Impact on Ridgewood Property Taxes

Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi

June 26,2016

Assemblywomen Holly Schepisi

Residents of Ridgewood , for the past 4 years I’ve proposed an amendment to our State’s constitution to end the patently unfair school funding formula. Under a new school funding plan which follows my proposal, the average home in Ramsey would see a reduction in property taxes of $2,411 per year. Call your Mayor, Council and Board of Education. Tell them to support the Fairness Formula! We can’t afford not to.

Join The Movement

The Fairness Formula: Equal Funding for Every Child, Our Path to Lower Property Taxes

Join Governor Christie’s Fairness Formula solution to New Jersey’s two most pressing crises that are hurting all New Jerseyans: the failure of urban education and property taxes. The Governor’s monumental Fairness Formula will provide equal education funding for every pupil throughout the state, valuing every child equally.

75% of all New Jersey districts would get more state aid than they do today. The biggest driver of New Jersey’s nation-high property taxes is the ineffective and unfair state school funding formula. The Fairness Formula will not only be equal for students it may also provide hundreds or even thousands of dollars in annual property tax savings for New Jerseyans in most communities. Join the movement today to being your path to lower property taxes.

JOIN THE MOVEMENT: It’s time for your voices to be heard. It’s time for the people to take back control of this issue and apply common sense to it. Sign up to join the movement and begin your path to lower property taxes.

https://www.nj.gov/governor/taxrelief/pages/join.shtml

For every resident of Bergen County, this is the MOST IMPORTANT issue that directly impacts your property taxes. Bergen County residents on average contribute the MOST money to the State of New Jersey and receive the least school aid in the State. Under the Governor’s proposal, the average school district in Bergen County would see an increase in school aid from the State of over 1000%. Every representative from Bergen County who cares about his or her residents needs to support this proposal. Real numbers of increased aid would be:

Municipality Current Aid New Aid under proposal:

Ridgewood $389.40    $6,110.60   1569%
Closter $400.24 $6,099.76
Demarest $429.61 $6,070.39
Dumont $3,427.95 $6,001.53
Emerson $432.69 $6,067.31
Hillsdale $711.89 $5,788.11
Mahwah $787.46 $5,712.54
Montvale $513.78 $5,986.22
Oakland $463.90 $6,036.10
Park Ridge $488.73 $6,011.27

Valley of Ridgewood Partners with Share 911 to Implement a New Emergency Alert and Response System

Ridgewood NJ, The Valley Health System has partnered with Share 911 to implement a new emergency alert and response system that will provide real-time information to both employees and first responders. This new technology will play a critical role in increasing the system-wide safety measures that protect employees, physicians, volunteers, patients and guests.

Share 911 is not a substitute for calling 911; rather it is a powerful tool that enables co-workers to help each other and make more informed decisions to protect themselves while the police, fire or EMS are en route.

According to Daniel Coss, Director of Security and Public Safety, The Valley Health System, “Over the past few years, Valley has implemented a number of new safety measures to protect both its staff and its patients. Access to Share 911 will serve as a 24/7 emergency resource for all employees.”

Share 911 was founded in 2013 by Ramsey resident Erik Endress, a 30-year volunteer firefighter, and Ray Bailey, a former deputy police chief. The program was then developed by a Ramsey, N.J. based start-up, OnScene Technologies Inc., which is led by developer Adrian Lanning.

The primary goal of Share 911 is to change the way that people respond to emergencies, with a focus on large buildings that have a large number of occupants. Its web-based system is currently being used in approximately 1,000 locations nationwide including hospitals, K-12 schools and private businesses.

When an individual calls 911, the information they share has to be funneled through dispatchers prior to being disseminated to first responders such as police and EMS. This system is highly effective during small scale emergencies, but can become less effective during large scale incidents due to dispatchers receiving an overwhelming volume of calls.

With the invention of Share 911, building occupants, security and police are able to receive real-time information about a current threat— fire, medical or other—on their smart phones, computers or tablets without going through a dispatcher. And, because it’s web-based, there are no limits to the number of people using it at any given time. This means that all employees can use the system simultaneously.

This years turnout was significantly larger than last year . Students were well informed and thoroughly debated the issues .There were clearly some future statesmen and women in the room .

The Model Congress is an educational event for students where they will replicate a day in the life of a Congressperson in the U.S. House of Representatives. It gave an opportunity for naive idealism to met reality of negotiation and compromise. The Congressmen’s very able staff helped organized and run the event.

The Model Congress gives students a first-hand opportunity to learn how Congress works by allowing them to research legislation currently being considered in the U.S. House of Representatives, break into committees to further examine and debate the legislation, and finally bring the legislation to the House floor for a vote.

How Fiduciary Rule May Censor Financial Broadcasters Like Dave Ramsey

dave ramsey ridgewood blog

John Berlau

Popular financial radio show host Dave Ramsey caused a firestorm on Twitter last week when he weighed in against the “fiduciary rule”—the controversial pending Department of Labor regulation that would impose new restrictions on a vast swath of financial professionals who handle IRAs and 401(k) accounts. Yet, Ramsey was only echoing concerns about the costs of the rule already expressed by Members of Congress from both parties.

Ramsey Tweeted, “this Obama rule will kill the Middle Class and below ability to access personal advice.” A war of Tweets then broke out between opponents of the rule, and supporters, the latter of which includes fee-based investment advisers expected to benefit from the new costs the rule will shower on their broker competitors.

Fittingly, even before Ramsey came out against the rule, one of his critics called for using the rule against Ramsey, supposedly for providing advice said critic deemed harmful to savers. In an Octoberarticle in LifeHealthPro, an online trade journal for insurance agents and financial advisers, Michael Markey, an insurance agent and owner of Legacy Financial Network, called for Ramsey to “be regulated and to be held accountable” by the government for the opinions he gives to listeners. Markey hailed the Labor Department rule as ushering a new era in which “entertainers like Dave Ramsey can no longer evade the pursuit of regulatory oversight.”

The brother of a fugitive luxury car dealer was arrested in Egg Harbor Township after a motor vehicle stop Monday.

Anil A. Iqbal, 36, of Egg Harbor Township, was wanted by Ramsey police in connection with an April 2014 crime, Ramsey Police Chief Bryan Gurney said in a news release.

Iqbal’s brother is Afzal “Bobby” Khan, who isaccused of bilking dozens of car owners, banks and financing companies in deals involving Bentleys, Lamborghinis and Porsches at his dealership, Emporio Motor Group in Ramsey.

Iqbal was remanded to the Bergen County Jail on $1 million bail. He is charged with conspiracy to commit theft, theft by extortion, theft by deception and fencing.

Iqbal was an employee at the dealership in April 2014 when a victim brought a 2013 Lamborghini into the dealership on a consignment sale, Gurney said. The car was sold to a Nevada resident for $368,274, but the money was never delivered to the original owner.

Ramsey Detective Brad Smith investigated Iqbal’s alleged crime. Officials from Ramsey, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the FBI have been investigating the Emporio Motor Group and Khan remains a fugitive.

Bobby Khan spoke the language of luxury car lovers. He could discuss whether a Lamborghini Aventador could outrace a Ferrari F12berlinetta. He said he could tell a Bentley from a Rolls-Royce blindfolded, by the smell of the leather.

In his Ramsey auto showroom filled with gleaming models built for style and speed, Khan dressed in expensive suits and charmed his customers, who believed they were dealing with someone who loved cars as much as they did. He persuaded them to buy from him, or give him their cars to sell on consignment.

There were no apparent problems at the Route 17 dealership he opened in April 2013 until a month ago, when irate customers began posting on Yelp.com, the business review website, that they had not been paid for cars Khan sold on consignment, or had not received titles for purchased cars. In mid-September, Yelp posters began urging all victims to file complaints with the police, and customers began sharing information through text messages and emails.

SANDY HOOK – When they walked from the sea into the surf here Sunday, Charlotte Samuels and Lynn Ascione were both one step closer to where they want to be one day: swimming the English Channel.

The two Bergen County swimmers, who didn’t know each other before Sunday, were among nearly two-dozen swimmers from around the globe who competed in the Ederle Swim, an annual 17.5-mile long-distance, open-water event sponsored by New York City Swim. In fact, Samuels is apparently one of the youngest to ever finish it.

The 15-year-old Ridgewood High School student, and Ascione, a 46-year-old stay-at-home Ramsey mother, are very different. But they share a passion for the adventure, discipline, exposure to nature and mental serenity that open-water swimming brings them. They are aiming to swim the English Channel, and the Ederle Swim is considered a prelude to that 21-mile-long feat.

Samuels finished Sunday’s swim at 1:23 p.m., in 5 hours and 38 minutes, when she walked onto a nearly deserted beach at Sandy Hook. The swim began at Battery Park in downtown Manhattan, and Samuels said those final strokes to the shore in Jersey were really tough ones.

“It felt like forever,” said Samuels, who was wearing bright royal blue nail polish on her fingers and toes, her long dark hair tied back.
