Ridgewood NJ, Dr. Fishbein spoke about the BOE Finance Committee’s request last year of looking into the viability of selling the Education Center and moving elsewhere. A formal market appraisal of the Education Center came in at $2.8 million in April 2018. LAN also prepared preliminary drawings for a new building in the space in front of Glen School that came in at an estimated $10 million. Rental fees would range from $150k – $260k per year, with the likelihood of a necessary relocation outside of Ridgewood. The conclusion was that it is financially prudent to stay at the current site, 49 Cottage Place.

Calls to Order An Audit Of State Education Spending

BOE

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce is again asking Gov. Phil Murphy to authorize an audit of education funding in New Jersey as way to root out waste and provide tax relief for homeowners and renters.

“I appreciate that the governor ordered an audit of the Economic Development Agency and an audit of NJ Transit – and those audits were helpful — but neither of them will help the state deal with its number one problem, which is property taxes,” said DeCroce.

“The key to property tax relief is finding out where our education tax money is going and how much can be saved by eliminating waste and improving efficiency,” said DeCroce, who twice last year asked the governor to commission an extensive school spending audit.

Reader says , “Well, ain’t that typical of entitled people. I want what I want and I am entitled to whatever I want “

BOE

Well, ain’t that typical of entitled people. I want what I want and I am entitled to whatever I want , even if I have to stop the rotation of the planet to get it.

Hey BOE how about a little humility. We have great laws in the USA , how about respecting them. If things don’t work out perfectly have a little perspective. I mean you ran once, you won, so run again if you have to, and see if you can win on your merits, on what the public thinks of your record so far. The proper way to look at the situation is for YOU to see it as an interesting challenge. I mean SHAME ON YOU. What kind of example are you setting for the children. Learning to accept disappointment is part of life. And this is no major disappointment. So your term is cut short, so what, it is not a death sentence. AND THAT IS HOW YOU ARE TREATING IT. What are you teaching the kids; ya know what, you are teaching the children that when they receive life’s inevitable disappointments and they don’t get their way, instead of sucking it up and moving on, maybe they should take drugs and pain killers to kill their emotional pain. You BOE people are despicable.

Popular athletic field turf raises worries in North Jersey

The tiny specks of black rubber burrow their way into everything.

Keith Verkem finds them embedded in his carpet. In his car mats. Even chewed by his dog.

The shredded bits of used car and truck tires — called crumb rubber — routinely infest his Glen Rock home. They are carried in by his 13-year-old son, Zachary, after soccer games on artificial turf. They are used as infill on nearly all synthetic fields in the country.

And he wonders just how safe those little pellets are.

“My son comes home and takes off his cleats, and now I have piles of crumb rubber in my house,” Verkem said. “They do get everywhere.”

The large majority of studies have found minimal to no health risks from crumb rubber after testing turf fields, including analyses conducted by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the University of California at Berkeley.

RIDGEWOOD – Football fans weren’t the only people seated in the stands at Ridgewood High School on Thursday night.

Some of the crowd turned out to see hometown hero Charlotte Samuels be recognized by school leaders for the physical and mental feat of being the youngest person to complete the Triple Crown of open water swimming.

Charlotte, a junior at Ridgewood High School, was brought to the 50-yard line before the start of the Maroons football game against the Kennedy High School Knights. Joined by her parents, the boys and girls swim teams, her swimming coach and the principal and vice principal, the 16-year-old was lauded for her accomplishment.

“We’ve all faced hardships and challenges,” Principal Thomas Gorman said. But swimming for more than 20 hours, some of the time in the dark, feeling cold, lonely and afraid makes Charlotte “a champion and inspiration to all of us.”

Charlotte swam around Manhattan Island in June, across the Catalina Channel in California in August and through the English Channel last month.

RIDGEWOOD — Thousands of dollars are being spent this week to repair the village’s turf fields, which were damaged late last week when heavy rain caused flash flooding.

The artificial turf field at the village’s Maple Park suffered $48,000 in damage, Ridgewood officials said at a council meeting this week.

Workers began cleaning silt and dirt from the turf surface at Ridgewood High School on Thursday; some resultant wrinkles in the field will also be removed.

Flood damage will also be repaired at nearby Stevens Field, which is also owned by the school district.

Earlier this week, Ridgewood school officials allocated an emergency expenditure of $119,865 for the work.

It is expected the school fields will be usable within two weeks, when the school’s soccer and football teams are set to start practices.
