Reader says grass is financially responsible and is less toxic to the environment

maple+field1-300x19911

New grass blends are water retentive and need much less pesticide treatments. Grass does not need to be treated with antibacterial solutions and temperatures on the field NEVER reach the temperatures that artificial turf does when exposed to direct sunlight. But the biggest problem is that Maple Field is in an active flood plain. The extensive damage to the field was predictable and as we knew in 2004-2005 , it would be costly. Recent articles on the subject state that grass is financially responsible and is less toxic to the environment.

Ridgewood’s Maple Field: To Turf of Not to Turf that is the Question Again

maple+field1-300x19911

Yankees Hall of Famer Yogi Berra,”Déjà vu all over again”

October 1,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Maple field in Ridgewood is once again the center of negative attention . The Ridgewood Fields Committee has basically admitted the warranty on the field has expired and the field is in dire straits .
Insiders have cautioned that one more major flood and its done .

Turf Field Safety : GMAX TEST RESULTS ARE IN

Gmax testing is a standard measure of the safety of athletic fields. It involves measuring the shock absorbing properties of a playing surface and comparing the results to an industry standard set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Harder surfaces will increase the amount of impact absorbed by the body, which results in a higher Gmax rating. Scores over 200 are considered dangerous and increase the risk of life threatening head injuries. Preferred Gmax scores should be in the 120-150 range.

Currently the Maple field is testing at 185 , the NFL like the GMAX around 100 .A GMAX score of 200 is like concrete.

Last weeks council meeting Councilmen Ramon Hache gave a Field’s Committee update and possible solutions to remediate Maple Field. One suggestion is to infuse the current field with millions of rubber pellets but one more major flood may finish the field once and for all .Another idea would be to replace the current field its best years are way behind it  and some have suggested a new grass field to replace the turf .

Best guesses put the cost of a new turf field around $600,000. The infusion seems very temporary given the fact the field is in a flood zone  and estimates for a new grass field have not yet been taken.

Councilmen Ramon Hache suggested another idea was also to build berm to protect the field better from flood there by protecting the investment better.

The Ridgewood blog was a very big opponent of the ‘turf movement” in town . We cautioned over health effects of the turf ,runoff flood waters contributing to added flooding in town , additional maintenance costs and the fact in Maple fields case the property was deeded to the Village with the idea it should remain a natural preserve.

There is no perfect solution , we are continually told by Sports groups of the need for more fields , while many in town seek a balance between active fields and preservation of scare natural resources .We have now had turf fields long enough to do a real world ,with real specific Ridgewood data for a cost benefit analysis. What ever the outcome it will not be perfect but so far the Ridgewood blog is confident with the new Council and renewed community spirit that all parties with get a fair hearing.

Reader says to deposit the RBSA check or not ,that is the question?

maple+field1-300x19911

there’s a running theme on this blog of having people minimize the significance of an event to try to make the conversation stop. (It seems to have the opposite effect.) Here’s a scenario that did NOT go down. A fervent resident presses a literally-pay-to-play-baseball check upon an official, who smiles, hands it back, and says, “We know how much you want this mondo field that the Schedler neighbors have good arguments against. If we go with it, believe me, we’ll come to you for a big donation. Until the council has voted to proceed, however, naturally you can see that we can’t accept any money. Think how that would look! And of course we wouldn’t be allowed to let it sit around without cashing it–there’s an ordinance against that–yet cashing it prematurely would give the wrong message about how the council makes its decisions. opening village government to valid criticism and potential lawsuits. That wouldn’t be good! See you at the Daily Treat!”

Colin Kaepernick this time you went too far ,we for one have had enough celebrity BS

#Kaepernick dealing with being oppressed

August 31,2016
by PJ Blogger and the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, This is a strategic PR move by him and his people. It was already decided months ago that the faltering quarterback was being cut from the team, so before the announcement of him getting cut make headlines, his handlers had to make headlines before that news came out.
So, to sit down during the National Anthem was a brilliant move for Kaepernick to make headlines so that he comes off as a victim which fits in with the political climate, and spin it as if its about people and oppression. So later when they announce that he is being cut, which most of you don’t know, it will now look like he is being cut, because he “stood up for you and against the system. Which you will all believe without question.
We are get a bit tired and board of the reality TV antics and multi million dollar celebrities yelling about how repressed they are so we at the Ridgewood blog have decided to boycott all NFL games and ESPN until they stand and act like men or at lest act like professionals.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Little League rules mandate that every player on a team’s roster must have at least one at-bat in a game.

That was no problem for Tony Barbera, manager of the Ridgewood Under-14 Little League softball team, which roared to district, sectional and state championships this summer and missed by one game of moving on to the Junior Little League World Series in Kirkland, Wash.

Youth Baseball: Ridgewood squad resumes last summer’s success

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Just over 11 months ago, the Ridgewood Raiders 14U baseball team returned to a hero’s welcome in the village after the squad’s successful season culminated in a trip to the Junior League World Series.

The same group of boys had another strong campaign this summer but without any of the fanfare that accompanied last year’s triumphs. That was perfectly fine with them.

Ridgewood Lax Player Recovering Well From Adam’s Apple Surgery

Ridgewood LAX Association

June 12,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ,as previously reported a Ridgewood High School sophomore LAX player is recovering well from a Friday procedure at Hackensack University Medical Center after being hit in the neck with a lacrosse ball. Ridgewood High School’s Jack Kennedy was in the ICU after a procedure that repaired his cracked Adam’s apple and three other fractures in his throat, according to his aunt, Laurie Alessi of Ridgewood.

Laurie Alessi gave this update on Facebook :  “Dr was in and although he is progressing he is still very internally swollen and bruised. Drainage tube is out. Vocal chord still not moving but his voice is actually ok. Time will tell on that. Not much can be done about that right now . He can talk but isn’t supposed to for at least a week preferably 2 to aid in the swelling coming down. Imagine a 16 year old not talking! He isn’t where he needs to be in order to come home safely. So we are looking at Wednesday now. Not what we were hoping for but better to be here and be safe than sorry. Keep those prayers coming thank u for the outpouring of love we have received this past week. We truly appreciate everything everyone has done for our family ! Way to many names to list!”
