FAIR LAWN – It took a lifetime for Ridgewood to win its first District 6 wrestling title. It took just a year to get the second, thanks to a senior class that helped turn around the program over their four years.

Five Maroons were named champions, four of them seniors, as Ridgewood won the team title going away. Perhaps the biggest of those wins came from senior Andrew Moras, who knocked off defending champion Zach Hunko of Glen Rock/Saddle Brook at 195 pounds.

Down 4-1 late in the second period, Moras escaped and got a quick takedown to tie it at 4-4 entering the third period. He scored a reversal with 1:28 left in the period to grab the lead and added a late takedown to insure his 8-5 victory.

“I just had to get a feel for how he was wrestling,” Moras said of his first district title. “It was a pretty repetitive match, and he was trying to toss me. All I had to do was put my weight back and I was able to slip right out.”

“This senior class has been amazing,” Ridgewood coach Torre Watson said.

Bergen County residents vocal against proposed increase water rates by United Water New Jersey

The crowd was thin but the opposition vocal during a public hearing Wednesday on a proposed 18 percent increase in water rates for most of Bergen County that drew criticism for being too large during tough times.

Only about a dozen residents attended the hearing in Hackensack, but those who spoke urged regulators to deny, or at least trim, the increase United Water New Jersey is seeking to help pay for water system improvements, plus a 10.9 percent profit and employee raises.

In the 45-minute hearing in the Bergen County Adminstration building, residents and municipal officials said the proposal was excessive at a time when people and towns were struggling financially. The request is pending before the state Board of Public Utilities, which must approve utility rate increases before they can take effect.

“In today’s economy, that is a no-no,” said Omar Rodriguez of Saddle Brook. “What is going to happen when the economy gets better? Are they going to ask for 30 percent? This is the time for the BPU to stand their ground and do what…is fair.”

Echoing those concerns was 89-year-old Nina Levinson, who called the proposal “outrageous,” particularly for the elderly.

Readers Remain Skeptical over potential Change in “Blue Laws”

Ridgewood stores are dying more from the lack of parking than the lack of Sunday shopping. 20 years and counting on a parking garage solution!!!! Paul……How about fixing that, instead of prioritizing the grandiose condo plans that will ruin our village.

Rte 17 will be at stand still on Sunday too? Drivers using Ridgewood local streets as a short cut. Can’t wait. Residents of Ridgewood, Maywood, Rochelle Park, Saddle Brook, River Edge and Oradell can look forward to pay more for Sunday police coverage while receiving none of the tax benefits that Paramus residents enjoy.

Municipalities slammed by tax appeal refunds seek schools and counties to pay their share of the refunds.

Municipalities slammed by a spike in tax appeals are calling on the state Legislature to require schools and counties — both of which receive a portion of taxes collected by the towns — to pay their share of the refunds.

North Jersey towns say their situation is dire: Saddle Brook, for example, may issue $2.5 million in bonds this year — on top of the $700,000 it issued in 2011 — to pay for its refunds. Teaneck currently owes $2.2 million in rebates to 1,800 taxpayers. Paterson issued $3.3 million in bonds last year.

While towns keep approximately one-third of every tax dollar collected, and sometimes less than that, they are required by law to reimburse the entire amount of the refund if a homeowner successfully challenges a property assessment, officials say.

As the director of the state League of Municipalities put it, the system that has hamstrung towns for years has now put them in a “straitjacket.”

Bergen County property owners filed 12,223 appeals last year, 2,550 more than in 2011 and significantly higher than the 8,986 filed in 2010, according to the County Board of Taxation. About 10,300 tax appeals were filed in Passaic County last year, an increase over about 7,200 appeals filed in 2011, said county spokesman Keith Furlong.

FAIR LAWN — Ridgewood’s Joe Oliva had just helped guide the Maroons to their first District 6 championship on Saturday, but not even five minutes had passed when the junior standout was already thinking about just how good next year’s team can be.

“We’re returning nine place-winners next year,” said Oliva, who captured the 126-pound district title at Fair Lawn with a 9-5 win over Saddle Brook/Glen Rock’s Mike Andreano. “I think this team has a bright future. Saddle Brook has been the team to beat around here the last four years, but we’ve worked hard, too. [Saturday] we had some kids bump up and win some big matches for us.”

Ridgewood coach Torre Watson admitted he was a bit apprehensive following Friday’s strong opening night performance, but he knew the Maroons had the talent to finish the job Saturday.

After a first-round exit in the state tournament, Watson said Ridgewood put a bit more stock in this year’s district tourney.

North Jersey law enforcement rang in the New Year with just a few motorists in custody on charges of driving while intoxicated.

Most police departments in Bergen and Passaic counties reported no DWI arrests Tuesday.

The Palisades Interstate Parkway Police arrested a juvenile on drunken driving charges, Garfield and Saddle Brook also logged one arrest each, while Fair Lawn officers took two drivers into custody overnight.

“It’s hard to really say why,” said Garfield Lt. Tim Brutosky, referring to the low number of arrests in town. “People are having parties all over the place, I guess it’s a matter of fate. We are out there patrolling, but I guess everyone was lucky last night.”

Troopers from the state police barracks in Bloomfield, who patrol the Garden State Parkway from Woodbridge to Montvale, arrested three people on DWI charges during the night, said Trooper Ian Rosenberg.

Sgt. Adam Grossman, public information officer for the New Jersey State Police, said statewide figures on DWI arrests wouldn’t be tallied until after 6 a.m. today, the end of the holiday period. But he said more troopers were patrolling the highways and were on the lookout for drivers who may have been driving drunk.

N.J. towns blame state for part-timers on pension rolls

N.J. towns blame state for part-timers on pension rolls

Part-time work for the New Jersey towns of Leonia, Saddle Brook and Elmwood Park helped attorney Brian Giblin rack up pension credits worth $33,143 a year, even after a 2007 state law made contractors like him ineligible.

Giblin was among five attorneys singled out in a July 17 audit by Comptroller Matthew Boxer that found 202 people improperly enrolled in the state pension system. The potential cost of retirement payments to those attorneys, engineers and other professionals is at least $1.9 million annually, Boxer said, and probably much more because his office surveyed only 159 of New Jersey’s more than 1,000 towns and school districts.   (Young, Bloomberg)

The governing body passed an ordinance Wednesday night that will essentially shore up funds to improve conditions around two bodies of water that have proved problematic in the village, particularly during and after major storms.

The Village Council appropriated a total of $422,000 for protective measures at the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook and Saddle River. The sum includes nearly $344,000 in grant money from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service, while $78,000 is taken from the municipality’s capital fund account.
