Instagram deletes millions of accounts in spam purge in what has been dubbed the “Instagram rapture”

By Dave Lee Technology reporter, BBC New

People who lost a lot of followers criticised the action, dubbing it the “Instagram Rapture”.

Like its parent company Facebook, Instagram routinely removes accounts to limit spam and prevent users buying followers to appear more popular.

Rapper Akon reportedly lost 56% of his followers in the cull.

Figures collated by developer Zach Allia – not affiliated to Instagram – totted up the impact of the purge on the site’s top 100 accounts.

The big losers were Justin Bieber (minus 3,538,228 followers), and an online marketing specialist called Wellington Campos, which lost 3,284,304 followers overnight.

One account, chiragchirag78, lost 99% of his followers – 3,660,460 – before he himself was deleted.

Instagram’s own account on the site lost 18,880,211 followers overnight.

‘Omg’

Instagram had warned its users that the deletion was coming in a blog post earlier this month.

“We’ve been deactivating spammy accounts from Instagram on an ongoing basis to improve your experience,” wrote chief executive and founder Kevin Systrom.

“As part of this effort, we will be deleting these accounts forever, so they will no longer be included in follower counts. This means that some of you will see a change in your follower count.”

Sorry Millennials: All Net Jobs Growth Since 2007 Has Gone to Immigrants
By Ryan Lovelace
December 19, 2014 11:15 AM

All of the net gains in in jobs since 2007 have gone to immigrants — both legal and illegal — according to a new report from the Center for Immigration Studies, meaning that fewer native-born Americans are working today than were at the end of 2007.

From November 2007 through November 2014, the number of employed native-born Americans has decreased more than 1.45 million, while the number of employed immigrants has risen by more than 2 million (as the immigrant population grew rapidly, too), according to data compiled by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Native employment has still not returned to pre-recession levels, while immigrant employment already exceeds pre-recession levels,” the report says. “Furthermore, even with recent job growth, the number of natives not in the labor force (neither working nor looking for work) continues to increase.”

Visas, Hillary Clinton, and the Ecuadorean ‘alien smuggler.’

Visas, Hillary Clinton, and the Ecuadorean ‘alien smuggler.’

By: Moe Lane (Diary)  |  December 17th, 2014 at 10:00 PM

I wonder if the New York Times is not entirely comfortable with the idea of a Hillary Clinton candidacy: “The Obama administration overturned a ban preventing a wealthy, politically connected Ecuadorean woman from entering the United States after her family gave tens of thousands of dollars to Democratic campaigns, according to finance records and government officials.” Specifically, the woman (Estefanía Isaías) got a visa from Clinton’s State Department (the Times was very careful to note that) despite involved in, and I don’t know why I’m so surprised here, what was called ‘alien smuggling.’  Apparently the Isaias family is made up of very rich people with severe entitlement issues and at least two fugitives from Ecuadorean justice; but perhaps I’m being unfair about the ‘entitlement’ bit.  The article makes it clear that the Isaias family has bought a time-share in US Senator Bob Menendez (D, NJ)… and I have to admit that if I had this kind of access I’d be severely tempted to use it to fix parking tickets (or extradition requests), too.

Is the mystique of a Cuban cigar all smoke?

Ridgewood cigar salesman Gary Kolesaire thinks he knows what it is about Cuban cigars and rum that Americans find so alluring, so romantic, so sexy. It’s not their exquisitely cultivated flavors, made for the sophisticated palate and deeply rooted in cultural tradition.

It’s that they’re illegal.

“We always want the forbidden fruit. There’s your demand,” said Kolesaire, co-owner of The Tobacco Shop of Ridgewood.

Enzo Lentini, maitre d’ at Grissini restaurant in Englewood Cliffs, agreed. “The rum is basically all the same, if you are talking about the distilling process,” he said. “Everything is great and wonderful – until it’s made legal. The fact that they are prohibited is what makes it so coveted.”

Local tobacco and liquor procurers on Thursday seemed cynical — or, at best, cautiously optimistic — in the wake of recent news that the United States and Cuba were reestablishing diplomatic relations.

President Obama intends to open an embassy in Havana and loosen travel and trade restrictions. At least initially, American visitors to Cuba still won’t be able to bring back more than $100 of Cuban rum or tobacco for personal use. Not everyone will be allowed to travel to the Caribbean island, either, as generalized tourism is still banned.

Valley Health System adds partnership with Mount Sinai

THE RECORD

The Valley Health System is partnering with the Mount Sinai Health System in New York, which could prove a major advantage for the Ridgewood-based organization as it looks to recruit physicians and enhance its research, officials said Thursday.

A Mount Sinai associate dean will be appointed in January to oversee the development of initiatives for clinical services, research and staff education programs at both institutions, said Audrey Meyers, president and CEO of the Valley Health System, which includes the 451-bed Valley Hospital, Valley Home Care and Valley Medical Group.

More stand-alone hospitals are merging with larger systems as health care delivery and reimbursement change radically under the Affordable Care Act. But Meyers stressed that “both organizations will remain independent.”

The new partnership “is strictly an academic affiliation,” Meyers said.

Menorah lighting becomes new tradition in Ridgewood

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Hanukkah, the eight-day celebration centered around a miracle, felt like exactly that to some Ridgewood residents.

On Tuesday, the first night of the Jewish holiday, members of the Ridgewood Menorah Committee handed out blue goody bags filled with glow sticks, bracelets, dreidels, and gelt while cantors from Temple Israel and Wyckoff’s Temple Beth Rishon sang traditional songs.

Propped up against a statue facing the still un-lit menorah was Hanna Landau, a 46-year village resident and Holocaust survivor.

“I’m glad I lived long enough to see it,” Landau said of the menorah lighting about to take place.

When she moved to Ridgewood in 1968, Landau said anti-Semitism was still part of the way of life.

Her family had been denied homes by realtors and children at school would call her kids hurtful names.

“It was difficult living here in the ’60s,” Landau said. “I could not believe 12 miles from the GW [George Washington Bridge] there was a town that was so restricted.”

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

The Planning Board got a chance to question the village planner about multifamily housing this week.

The past few hearings have been devoted to resident questions about Village Planner Blais Brancheau’s testimony on multifamily housing, which discussed the benefits for Ridgewood as well as some factors of concern to residents.

In a four-hour hearing in Benjamin Franklin Middle School on Tuesday night, about 10 residents asked remaining questions, followed by queries from Planning Board members.

This hearing, during which several questions were raised, brought the Planning Board a step closer to the eventual end of the year-long proceedings. These hearings analyzed a proposed amendment to the master plan, available on the village website, that would allow high-density multifamily housing in three downtown zones.

The next hearing will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 6 in Ridgewood High School, said Planning Board Chairman Charles Nalbantian. Board questions will continue, followed by attorney cross-examination.

Medicare penalizes 23 New Jersey hospitals over errors, infections

DECEMBER 18, 2014, 11:44 PM    LAST UPDATED: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2014, 11:48 PM

THE RECORD

The federal government will reduce its Medicare payments to 23 hospitals in the state — including six in North Jersey — in a crackdown on hospital errors and infections.

The list of hospitals, released Thursday, includes Hackensack University Medical Center, St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic and Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus. In all, 721 hospitals nationwide will see their Medicare payments cut by 1 percent for the year that began Oct. 1.

New Jersey was one of 10 states where a third or more of the hospitals were penalized.

The financial incentives and public reporting are a two-pronged strategy under the health care reform law known as Obamacare aimed at reducing harm to patients from hospital stays. Hospital errors are estimated to cost Americans more than $17 billion a year and contribute to the deaths of 180,000 Medicare patients alone.

And because Medicare, the federal insurance program for those over 65, is one of the largest sources of hospital revenue, even a 1 percent reduction can have a sizable impact on health care facilities.

For example, Hackensack University Medical Center, with $1.2 billion in revenue in 2012, had more than $263 million in Medicare payments that year. So a reduction of 1 percent would cost it nearly $3 million.

IRS warns of possible shutdown

By Rachael Bade

12/18/14 3:30 PM EST

Updated 12/18/14 6:38 PM EST

The IRS is considering its own temporary shutdown due to recent budget cuts enacted by Congress, its chief said Thursday.

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said furloughs — forced unpaid days off for employees as part of an IRS closure — is one idea reluctantly being tossed about to save money, though they are hoping they will not have to go there.

“People call it furloughs; I view it as: Are we going to have to shut the place down? And at this point, that will be the last thing we do, … but there is no way we can say right now that that wont happen,” Koskinen told reporters at a Thursday press conference on the upcoming tax season. “Again, I would stress that would be the last option.”
