Netflix CEO: Broadcast TV Will Be Dead By 2030

Nielsen Ratings are going to finally factor in Netflix traffic. Reed Hastings thinks it’s too little, too late.

By Jack Smith IV 11/28 11:15am

If you checked Nielsen Ratings, you’d think that the only people watching TV were age 54 and older (and you’d be right), and that Millennials are a black hole of immeasurable Internet content consumption—that is, until Nielsen starts measuring Netflix traffic next month.

But what does Netflix CEO Reed Hastings think about Nielsen’s bold step forward? Meh. Earlier this week, in Mexico City, he said that it’s “not very relevant” either way, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For Nielsen, this might look like modernization, but for those of us ready to enter 2015, it’s more like a move from the Mesozoic to the Paleozoic Era.

“It’s kind of like the horse, you know, the horse was good until we had the car,” Mr. Hastings said. “The age of broadcast TV will probably last until 2030.”

The trouble is how Nielsen intends on reporting streaming ratings: Nielsen will capture audio from home televisions, which accounts for no traffic from people binge-watching on their phones or curled up in bed with a laptop. It’ll capture some of the traffic, sure, but Netflix will always be able to say, “that’s like, a fraction of the real viewership.” And they’d be right.

But 2030 seems mightly early, no? Well, given that TV viewership dropped a full 50% between 2002 and 2012—which is largely before the advent of cord-slaying streaming habits—the future for the next 15 years of broadcast television is possibly catastrophic.

You’d think that by now, cable companies would have some sort of half-baked strategy to prevent companies like Netflix from eating their lunch.

U.S. CEOs threaten to pull tacit Obamacare support over ‘wellness’ spat

By Sharon Begley 4 hours ago

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Leading U.S. CEOs, angered by the Obama administration’s challenge to certain “workplace wellness” programs, are threatening to side with anti-Obamacare forces unless the government backs off, according to people familiar with the matter.

Major U.S. corporations have broadly supported President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform despite concerns over several of its elements, largely because it included provisions encouraging the wellness programs.

The programs aim to control healthcare costs by reducing smoking, obesity, hypertension and other risk factors that can lead to expensive illnesses. A bipartisan provision in the 2010 healthcare reform law allows employers to reward workers who participate and penalize those who don’t.

Ridgewood an increasingly significant restaurant town; Cafe 37 a reason

Ridgewood an increasingly significant restaurant town; Cafe 37 a reason
By Teresa Politano | The Star-Ledger

Of all the salads, the kale salad is most virtuous. You choose it with a certain smugness; it’s a healthier-than-thou selection. And then a chef sneaks in a bit of hazelnut and almond in the vinaigrette dressing, and your kale salad is suddenly perky and flirty and coy, sparking unexpected interest from the manly man meat-eater at the table. Then, boom, before you know it, the kale salad is gone, consumed like so many crisp, fresh French fries. Kale. Who knew?

The kale salad ($12), with avocado, blood orange slices and feta, is just one of the unexpected surprises at Café 37. It’s also, not surprisingly, the most popular salad on the menu.

Ridgewood has long been a town with good dining options, but in recent years, the scene has become even more competitive and dynamic. Café 37, which opened in 2012, remains one of the reasons.

Record Number of Americans Put off Medical Treatment Due to Costs

Record Number of Americans Put off Medical Treatment Due to Costs

Cost Still a Barrier Between Americans and Medical Care
by Rebecca Riffkin

In U.S., 33% have put off medical treatment because of cost
More put off treatment for serious conditions than non-serious
More with private insurance put off treatment in 2014 than 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. — One in three Americans say they have put off getting medical treatment that they or their family members need because of cost. Although this percentage is in line with the roughly 30% figures seen in recent years, it is among the highest readings in the 14-year history of Gallup asking the question.

Since 2001, Gallup has asked Americans each November if they have put off any sort of medical treatment for themselves or their families in the past 12 months. Last year, many hoped that the opening of the government healthcare exchanges and the resulting increase in the number of Americans with health insurance would enable more people to seek medical treatment. But,despite a drop in the uninsured rate, a slightly higher percentage of Americans than in previous years report having put off medical treatment, suggesting that the Affordable Care Act has not immediately affected this measure.

Among Americans with varying types of medical coverage (including no coverage), uninsured Americans are still the most likely to report having put off medical treatment because of cost. More than half of the uninsured (57%) have put off treatment, compared with 34% with private insurance and 22% with Medicare or Medicaid. However, the percentage of Americans with private health insurance who report putting off medical treatment because of cost has increased from 25% in 2013 to 34% in 2014.

Thirty-five percent of lower-income Americans — those with annual household incomes under $30,000 — report putting off medical treatment in the past 12 months, down from 43% in 2013. More upper-income Americans, on the other hand, report delaying treatment, with percentages rising from 17% in 2013 to 28% this year. The percentage of middle-income Americans who have put off medical treatment remains roughly the same as last year, at 38%.

Americans More Likely to Put Off Treatment for Serious Conditions

Those who indicate that they have put off medical treatment in the past 12 months are asked to rate the seriousness of the underlying condition or illness. This year, 22% of Americans say they have put off medical treatment for a “very” or “somewhat serious” condition. This is double the 11% who say they have put off treatment for a non-serious condition. Furthermore, the percentage who have put off treatment for a serious condition has increased slightly since 2013.

Less cash in the tank, more in the bank: Lower gas prices boost N.J. drivers’ bottom line

Less cash in the tank, more in the bank: Lower gas prices boost N.J. drivers’ bottom line

THE RECORD

Lissette Mendez got so fed up with high gasoline prices over the summer that she started looking for a new job with a shorter commute. Now, not only is the job search less urgent, but she can also set a little money aside for her daughter’s education.

Joseph Christ was able to splurge on a nine-day motorcycle trip to the Grand Canyon in October, just months after he stopped using his beloved 1996 Ford Bronco, whose appetite for gas cost him $120 per fill-up, in favor of a fuel-efficient sedan.

Aaron Carr hadn’t filled the tank of the family car to the top in more than seven months, buying just $20 at a time, hardly enough to budge the fuel gauge. But now, for the last few weeks, he’s been putting unspent gas money “on ice,” saving it for a rainy day.

Just as the holidays arrive, so has a measure of relief for New Jersey drivers. At an average of $2.71 per gallon as of Friday, state gas prices are at their lowest point in nearly four years and about 50 cents less than they were just three months ago. If they remain there, drivers are expected to save roughly $400 annually, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

“It’s like going back in time,” Frank Cappiello, 62, of Elmwood Park said as he and his wife treated their 2½-year-old granddaughter to a morning ride Thursday. “There’s money left over in the checkbook.”

‘Stupidity’ consultant agrees to testify

By Sarah Ferris – 11/25/14 06:00 AM EST

Jonathan Gruber, the former ObamaCare adviser in hot water for his comments about the “stupidity of the American voter,” has agreed to testify at a House panel next month, setting up a healthcare showdown in what could be the final week of this Congress.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will also hear from Obama administration official Marilyn Tavenner, who is under fire this week for using inflated enrollment figures for the healthcare law.

“Both Mr. Gruber and Administrator Tavenner have agreed to testify,” committee spokeswoman Caitlin Carroll told The Hill.

Both figures have played a role in major political headaches for the Obama administration, which is facing new allegations of “repeated transparency failures and outright deceptions” from Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.).Gruber, an economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will be grilled for a number of speeches he has given since 2010 that blame the Obama administration for intentionally obscuring details of the healthcare law in order to assure its passage.

Ridgewood NJ, Numerous 911 calls were received by Ridgewood FD shortly after 3:00 PM on Friday, 11/28 reporting a basement fire at 303 South Pleasant Avenue. First arriving units observed smoke coming from a second story window and the back door. All occupants of the home and a dog had safely evacuated the home prior to arrival of the fire department. However, two (2) cats were reportedly trapped inside; both succumbed to smoke inhalation despite the valiant efforts of Ridgewood Emergency Service members who performed CPR and administered oxygen. No injuries were sustained by humans. The fire was contained to the basement but there was smoke damage throughout the home. Origin of the fire is under investigation. Glen Rock PD assisted with traffic control. Glen Rock FD, Waldwick FD, Ridgewood EMS, and Ridgewood Emergency Services were all called to the scene. South Pleasant Avenue was closed between Spring Avenue and Grove Street while emergency personnel worked.

Ridgewood NJ, Ice that fell from the roof of a building located at 7 North Broad Street in Ridgewood reportedly struck a pedestrian walking on a sidewalk below, causing minor injuries to the man’s head.  Ridgewood PD, FD, and EMS units were dispatched to the scene shortly after 12 noon on Friday, 11/28.  The victim sought refuge from the falling ice in the basement’s building; he was treated there by Emergency Medical Technicians and refused transportation to a local hospital.  The building’s owner, Mr. Rocco Berardi, was seen arriving at the location shortly after the incident was reported, and talking with police officers.  Some snow was still observed on the roof of the building as emergency personnel worked inside.

Hack Friday : Black Friday cybercrime is unstoppable.

By Tal Kopan

11/28/14 8:06 AM EST

This holiday shopping season, kicking off with post-Thanksgiving deals, millions of Americans will almost certainly have their credit or debit card information stolen by overseas hackers.

Just like last year.

Twelve months after data from 40 million cards were stolen from Target, beginning a year of escalating hacks of retailers’ payment card systems, not much has changed beyond awareness.

The absence of federal action reflects the difficulty of improving cybersecurity. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle agree on the goal of improving the security of the nation’s networks, but disputes over even small details can sidetrack progress. Congressional action has been bogged down in side fights, and industry-led changes have been slow and narrow. Executive action, and power, on the issue is limited, and most administration efforts have been designed to encourage retailers to take extra precautions against theft, rather than apply new regulations.

Shaw’s Book Shop to Hold Story Time Sat. Dec. 6

Come and hear the classic story “Polar Express” and receive a silver bell. Shaw’s Book Shop will be holding story time on Saturday December 6 at 5pm, just before the Home for the Holidays parade. The theme for this year’s parade is children’s books. Shaw’s Book Shop is located at 79 Westwood Avenue, Westwood.

On Christmas Eve, a doubting boy boards a magical train that’s headed to the North Pole and Santa Claus’ home. We follow a beautifully illustrated story of this young boy’s quiet night ride with other children, on the Polar Express train to the North Pole, a “huge city standing alone at the top of the world, filled with factories where every Christmas toy was made.” Our narrator is the fortunate child, picked by Santa, to receive the first gift of that Christmas. He knows exactly what he wants, a simple gift that will help him continue to believe in the magic of Christmas, a silver bell from a reindeer’s harness. Polar Express is a wonderful book for those who want to believe in the spirit of Christmas every day of every year.

The Polar Express is a 1985 children’s book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg, a former professor at the Rhode Island School of Design. The book is now widely considered to be a classic Christmas story for young children. It was praised for its detailed illustrations and calm, relaxing storyline. In 1986, it was awarded the Caldecott Medal for children’s literature. Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association named the book one of its “Teachers’

Top 100 Books for Children.” It was one of the “Top 100 Picture Books” of all time in a 2012 poll by School Library Journal.

Please join us for this adventure to the North Pole and discover the magic of believing!
