More schools mull dropping Michelle O’s lunch rules
September 25, 2014

GREEN LAKE, Wis. – The Green Lake School District is the latest the join a number of schools reevaluating their participation in the National School Lunch Program.

The Ripon Press reports the district is dissatisfied with the new school lunch and snack rules championed by First Lady Michelle Obama.

“When I walk through the school cafeteria, I see multi-colored fruits and vegetables and whole-grain pasta or wraps on the trays of our students. The food looks really good, but the students aren’t eating it,” principal Mary Allen says, according to the paper.

“… The limited salt, whole-grains, vegetable substitutes for meat, and unfamiliar foods such as ‘quinoa’ and ‘jicama’ are not being embraced. Although the food looks good and is undeniably healthy, it is unflavored and tasteless.”

Students reportedly gave the school board a 31-page report produced in math class, which studied the question: “Will the Green Lake School District better serve its students without the National School Lunch Program?”

Valley Hospital’s beehives produce honey

Pools of golden honey formed in a tray, flowing down in a thin, glistening stream from a whirring centrifugal extractor, where inside the intricate work of thousands of bees was being harvested from their combs.

Roll your eyes at the wordplay if you want, but the employees at Valley Hospital were buzzing with excitement watching the demonstration on Sept. 18 of how honey is collected from the hospital’s rooftop hives.

Or maybe they were just feeling the sugar rush of having too many syrupy samples of the honey-laden foods made from the hospital’s sweet bounty: the deep purple hibiscus honey mint water, the creamy goat cheese balsamic honey dip, and the smooth yogurt honey cinnamon spread.

The employees gasped when beekeepers Joseph Lelinho and Eric Hanan, co-founders of Bee Bold Apiaries, unveiled an observation hive – a see-through colony of 30,000 wriggling insects contained by a wood frame – and inched closer slowly, nervous the bees might suddenly escape.

Daniel Reichenbach’s path from a childhood in Ridgewood to an adulthood fighting for Israel in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was not surprising for those who knew him best.

Some could say his decision was predestined.

“This is a long story, which started before I was born,” the 24-year-old man notes, pointing to his parents’ meeting in the ’70s – at a Jewish summer camp.

Though he was not “raised religious,” Reichenbach, who in November will have finished his second and last year of active IDF duty, found another home in Israel.

“All in all, I had a childhood and early adulthood that was saturated in Jewish identity, talk of love for Israel and the Jewish people. I traveled to Israel many times,” he said, and “fell in love with its history and the sheer improbability of its existence.”

Reader says anyone who defends the status quo  Parking Meters here can only be a part of the problem.

…and how amy millions will the new parking meters cost? with the added bonus of tracking residents shopping and parking habits via credit card use. Way to go.
— How about:
1) get all of the stolen money back
2) implement REAL security for the quarters – not just toss them in a open buckets in an unguarded closet.
New security measures have already been put into place which make future thefts much more difficult – so why do we need to spend millions on new parking meters?

So your argument is “let’s not install smart meters that will avoid any slippage for villagers” ? What kind of a Luddite are you ? New meters might threaten the long standing tradition of municipal employees stealing quarters to pay for personal entertainment or help with the mortgage or money launder it through AC, so let’s protest against them? Sorry , anyone who defends the status quo here can only be a part of the problem. We’re not falling for it.

Reader says Any development proposal that is so severe that it requires a change to the town’s Master Plan SHOULD take time so all parties

The (slow) speed of the process is (or at least SHOULD) be part of the intent and design of any process which can change the Master Plan. Any development proposal that is so severe that it requires a change to the town’s Master Plan SHOULD take time so all parties – including residents – have time to absorb, analyze and review the impact of such a proposal.Streamlining this process and making it faster and less painful IS NOT the direction that should be taken.

A change to the Master Plan NEEDS to be deliberate (and yes to a degree- difficult) to encourage developers to find solutions that meet their needs AND fit into the parameters of the existing Master Plan – otherwise we are at great risk to destroy all of those intangibles that make RW great and which drew the developers to the town in the first place.

Bergen County Exec’s race: continuing Donovan v. Saudino rift still factor for Republicans before November election

HACKENSACK – In preparation for the Bergen County Executive race in 2014, the two long-standing pillars and rivals of the Bergen Republican Party, County Executive Kathleen Donovan and Bergen Republican Chairman Bob Yudin, publicly made peace in December 2013. Joining hands, Donovan and Yudin presented a united front, one they maintained following the emergence of Democratic Freeholder Jim Tedesco as Donovan’s challenger in the 2014 election. No Surprise Here Past League of Muncipalities Prez: ‘ I would support a rise in the gas tax’

Wretched, abysmal traffic and worn out roads pockmarked with potholes characterize New Jersey’s quality of life, lawmakers grimly confirmed this morning as the Assembly Transportation Committee kicked around the possibility of a hike in the gas tax to replenish the state Transportation Trust Fund (TTF), with several local voices signifying support. HO-HO-KUS — Donna Cioffi said she was ignoring a letter from borough officials directing her to remove traffic-counting cables she paid an engineering firm to install across the street outside her home on Powderhorn Road.

The borough’s letter, delivered by a police officer Monday, threatened to remove the cables on Tuesday, yet they remained on the street Wednesday. The cables were eventually removed Wednesday evening.

Cioffi said Wednesday morning that she wasn’t at all concerned the town would intervene.

“Can you imagine the PR if they did?” Cioffi asked. “They would look like fools.”

Cioffi paid the engineering firm $600 to conduct the traffic study — the results of which will be forwarded to the borough, she said.

Cioffi maintains that traffic volumes on her street — a popular County Road 502 commuter cut-through — surpass the 4,000-plus vehicles that recent county estimates suggest traverse Powderhorn Road daily.

THE RECORD

Reality TV star Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and his brother, Marc, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to federal income tax evasion charges involving $8.9 million they earned over three years.

An indictment announced Wednesday by U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman accused the Sorrentino brothers of filing false business and personal tax returns in 2010, 2011 and 2012. They failed to report some of their income, and they reported some personal expenses, like luxury cars, expensive clothing and personal grooming bills, as business expenses, prosecutors said. Mike Sorrentino filed no personal income tax return in 2011, according to the charges.

The brothers had not been “living in reality,” Jonathan D. Larsen, an IRS official in Newark, said in a statement. They “created the illusion that they earned less income by filing false and fraudulent tax returns,” he said.

The Sorrentinos turned themselves in to IRS agents Wednesday. After a brief court appearance in Newark, they were released on $250,000 unsecured bonds
