You must be a real detective to come up with your big conspiracy theory. There were lots of cards with questions and the league women pick out a handful to ask.

So first knudson had to know the question would be selected and asked and then she had to know albano would lie so reynolds could come to the podium and ask albano to be clear on what hes saying and then knudson had to know albano would lie again. ah ha! i mean ah ha! you are probably fbi (fool bein ignorant)
albano could have just told the truth. oh wait. no. he had to lie becuase that was the setup so reynolds could catch him in the lie. ah ha.
i don’t think anyone had to setup albano to make him look bad. he did a good job of that himself. knudson was the best last night of the three and sedon was next. i don’t think either of them had to participated in your big conspiracy.how old is albano’s grandmother again?

Reader says I am a bit turned off by the whole astroturf the world thing

Jim is “always available”….except, we have learned, when it is time to vote in local elections….

I actually like the mayor and would want to support his choice but I just can’t pull the lever for someone who doesn’t bother to vote.

I am also a bit turned off by the whole astroturf the world thing. Enough already. So they play on grass and dirt. At least it produces oxygen and helps cool the earth instead of being just more pavement.

Reader says Everyone giving money to the RBSA should request to see the books

Watched the debate on ustream and not sure why the RBSA tax issue was raised but Jim was prepared with his answer “lawyer is looking into it” not a great response. Why did the RBSA fail to file tax returns for so many years and where does all the money go? Is it possible the “volunteers” are drawing salaries? Why did Jim become so defensive? Is this how he’ll treat the public if he doesn’t like the question?

Interesting he was prepared for the RBSA tax question but not for his voting record in municipal elections. Acting confused over presidential and municipal. He had to know he never voted in Mayl. Not sure this was important but he misled then lied and so now it’s important.

Misleading the people is serious. Are we being misled by Jim about his reason for running. This RBSA endorsement of Jim is clear he’s the sports candidate. As a parent with two kids in the RBSA program I am interested in their accounting practices. Everyone giving money to the RBSA should request to see the books.

Reader says Albano Supporters Continue their Campaign of Negativity

The letters to the editor in today’s Ridgewood News in support of Albano were interesting. A couple had nasty rants about a woman who was not even running and the others praised him for his service to youth sports.

If you are going to write in supoort of a candidate, stick to the subject. Writing negative comments about a resident does not make Albano look any better.

Keep it positive. I associate the negativity with your candidate.

Youth Unemployment at 15.5% in April

Youth Unemployment at 15.5% in April

Washington, DC – (5/2/14) – Generation Opportunity, a national, non-partisan youth advocacy organization, is announcing its Millennial Jobs Report for April 2014. The data is non-seasonally adjusted (NSA) and is specific to 18-29 year olds:

The effective (U-6) unemployment rate for 18-29 year olds, which adjusts for labor force participation by including those who have given up looking for work, is 15.5 percent (NSA). The (U-3) unemployment rate for 18-29 year olds is 9.1 percent (NSA).

The declining labor force participation rate has created an additional 1.932 million young adults that are not counted as “unemployed” by the U.S. Department of Labor because they are not in the labor force, meaning that those young people have given up looking for work due to the lack of jobs.

The effective (U-6) unemployment rate for 18-29 year old African-Americansis 23.3 percent (NSA); the (U-3) unemployment rate is 16.6 percent (NSA).

The effective (U-6) unemployment rate for 18-29 year old Hispanics is 16.1 percent (NSA); the (U-3) unemployment rate is 9.5 percent (NSA).

The effective (U-6) unemployment rate for 18-29 year old women is 13.1 percent (NSA); the (U-3) unemployment rate is 8.3 percent (NSA).

Patrice Lee, Director of Outreach at Generation Opportunity, issued the following statement:

“False promises mean very little when we are faced with unemployment numbers in the double digits and crippling student debt. We don’t want slogans, we want jobs.”

“Only 37 percent of young people approve of the president’s handling of the economy. Thirty-one percent approve of his handling of the federal budget deficit. We recognize that our unsustainable deficits and skyrocketing national debt hurt our ability to grow the economy and create opportunity.”

On Tuesday, Harvard’s Institute of Politics released a new poll of 18-29 year olds:

Just 47% of 18-29 year olds approve of President Obama’s job performance, the lowest approval rating recorded during his entire presidency
Only 39% approve of the president’s job performance on healthcare
More than twice as many young people believe that, generally speaking, the nation is on the wrong track rather than the right direction
Self-identified conservatives are 10 points more likely to vote in the 2014 midterm elections than self-identified liberals

Generation Opportunity is also issuing a revision for March’s Millennial Jobs Report. The overall U-3 unemployment rate for 18-29 year olds for March 2014 was 10.9%, two points higher than previously reported.

Generation Opportunity is a national, non-partisan organization advocating for economic opportunity for young people through less government and more freedom.

Voices from the First Round of the PARCC Tests in New Jersey Schools

Voices from the First Round of the PARCC Tests in New Jersey Schools

The second phase in the field tests of the online PARCC exams will start next week, with the state Department of Education inviting still more districts to take part.

New Jersey is already one of the biggest participants in the shakeout, with more than 60,000 students taking part last month. More than 1,000 schools are expected to participate next week.

During the first cycle of field tests in April, NJ Spotlight asked its readers — teachers, administrators, parents, and students themselves — to comment on the new exams. As the second round starts next week, we’re again asking those involved in the testing to share their experiences with us.

Here’s a small sampling of what we’ve been told thus far:

“Teachers and nontesting students have no access to computers and media resources during the testing days. This is getting to be a real problem, since the amount of testing days can approach 30 and administration has not indicated that there is going to be an improvement in access next year.” — teacher with students involved in the field test

“Education in the school came to a screeching halt. No other uses of technology were permitted during testing time. Students reported that the test itself was a big waste of time. Students also reported many problems with the process itself. Administrators were invisible during the process, as they were preoccupied with the tests. — teacher with students involved in the field test

“She enjoyed the experience. She said the questions were hard . . . . Learning to manage your time as you take the test seems to be the biggest challenge. — parent of a child in the field test

“It will force technology to be used in instruction, and it will raise the bar for students to learn touch-typing. Classroom instruction time will be reduced due to testing time . . . It was very frustrating getting all students logged onto the [test site]. Some got on without a hitch. Others took over an hour of trying and retrying.– administrator in a district involved in the field testing.  (Mooney/NJSpotlight)

Ridgewood school board approves budget

Ridgewood school board approves budget

May 1, 2014    Last updated: Thursday, May 1, 2014, 4:20 PM
By Laura Herzog
Staff Writer

The Ridgewood Board of Education (BOE) unanimously approved the 2014-2015 school budget on Monday, but not without caution.

Even as they approved the budget, which includes a 1.908 percent increase in school taxes, several board members raised concerns about future challenges. These cautionary messages included, most of all, an emphasis on growing education costs, some associated with special education and unfunded state mandates.

The total budget is $99,405,376, with a tax levy of $86,223,037. The owner of an average village home, assessed at $688,358, will see a school tax increase of $172.08.

BOE Vice President Vince Loncto led his comments by heaping praise on the district for several measures undertaken to improve educational quality and save on costs, including outsourced contracts and energy efficiency initiatives. But he concluded with an air of gravity, noting that “we’ll need to find ways to offset our growing expenses.”

Sharing Loncto’s concern, trustee Jim Morgan criticized the board for its budget-making process – and suggested it could do more to reduce the tax burden from the school budget, while maintaining services.

“The budget accomplishes many admirable things,” Morgan said, pointing to capital improvements, like upcoming renovations to the high school library, and a more robust push for technology in schools. But the trustee said the budget was crafted with a “status quo approach” without “critical analysis,” especially considering that a new teachers’ contact will need to be negotiated.

Ridgewood Guild Film Festival honors actor Danny Aiello

MAY 1, 2014    LAST UPDATED: THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2014, 4:31 PM
BY LAURA HERZOG
STAFF WRITER

Oscar-nominated actor Danny Aiello lives in Saddle River, and rarely passes through Ridgewood. That could be changing, the actor said, thanks to his recent foray into the village.

Aiello was named the first-ever celebrity lifetime honoree at the Ridgewood Guild’s annual film festival last week.

The well-known actor was brought to Ridgewood for the second day of the two-day festival, now in its fourth year, thanks to his friend and fellow actor, RJ Konner, a Ridgewood resident. Aiello went out to eat at the new restaurant Mémoire in Ridgewood while the film festival progressed in its entirety in Theatres 1 and 2 of Ridgewood’s Clearview Warner Quad.

“I’ve never been in Ridgewood really for any significant amount of time. I live in Saddle River. I promise that I’ll be here more often,” said Aiello, who blew a kiss to the audience upon returning to the theater after dinner, before taking a moment to praise his meal at Mémoire.

Aiello’s public appearance, including a Q-and-A session, followed a reel of clips played on the screen, featuring some of his best movie work, including scenes from Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing” (in his Oscar-nominated role, Aiello played the owner of a Brooklyn pizzeria, a white business in a neighborhood filled with ethnic tensions) and “Moonstruck” (he played Cher’s boyfriend). The clips alternated with Aiello’s more-recent music videos, in which he updates old standards, like “Save The Last Dance For Me,” by crooning in Frank Sinatra-like fashion, with accompaniment from the rapper Hasan.

RBSA Email :This was widely distributed on or shortly before April 15, 2014.

Subject: Albano For Council!

Ladies & Gents of the RBSA and Friends,

As you know, Jim is running for Village Council. While he is not just the “sports candidate”, the issue of the badly needed 90′ field, along with an all purpose field (read: soccer & lax) at Schedler is certainly a timely issue here.

(In case anyone is wondering, like the other two candidates, Jim is opposed to the three high density housing projects before the Planning Board. He realizes however, that the vacant lots of long gone businesses neither benefit nor beautify the Village and is seeking sensible development, that enhances, rather than detracts from our quality of life.

Similarly, he feels the current Valley Hospital expansion proposal, like the one before it, is far too intrusive to the neighborhood and our community as a whole. He recognizes the need for a hospital to stay current and calls on Valley to withdraw the current plan and make more of a good faith effort to work with the community to find a plan that works for all.

If you have any specific questions you’d like Jim to address, he is always available.)

The key to winning is always getting your supporters to the polls. With a paltry 20-22% turnout (maybe less) expected on May 13, that will be even more true in this election. We need to get the youth sports community energized and involved, spearheaded by the largest youth organization in town, the friends and families of the RBSA!

I’m asking two things: will you please take an Albano lawn sign? And, would you be willing to be part of a committee that will coordinate our get out the vote effort? This will involve networking, making lists, sending emails and maybe making a few election day phone calls. The anti-sports forces are mobilizing, so this is crucial!

Please let me know – lawn sign and/or committee? Election is 4 weeks from today, so it’s a short sprint. Time to rock & roll. Thanks for anything you can do.

Gary

Ms. Knudsen and Mr. Sedon clearly do care about the Village

unnamed

Ms. Knudsen and Mr. Sedon clearly do care about the Village

Fifteen years in town, with three children going through the schools, is not a newbie. Ms. Knudsen is vice chair of the Zoning Board and active on many fronts. Mr. Sedon wrote about Ridgewood for the Ridgewood News, learning more about the issues than 95% of longtime residents.

Mr. Albano has been busy “in the fields” but almost never voted in municipal elections and didn’t attend any meetings. Length of residency alone does not make a person knowledgeable.

The current mayor had lived in town for only a few years before joining the council. The difference is that he has never cared about the town or comprehended what used to make it great. He simply saw it as a steppingstone and continues to use it as such. In contrast, Ms. Knudsen and Mr. Sedon clearly do care.

Race for two Ridgewood Council seats heats up

MAY 2, 2014    LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, MAY 2, 2014, 12:31 AM
BY DARIUS AMOS

A standing-room only audience cramped into the Village Hall Court Room on Tuesday night, when the three candidates for Ridgewood Council debated publicly for the final time leading up to the May 13 municipal election.

Of the three candidates, Ridgewood’s electorate will be asked to select two to serve on the governing body for the next four years.

Candidates’ Night allowed Jim Albano, Susan Knudsen and Michael Sedon to answer specific questions raised by the event sponsor, the Ridgewood League of Women Voters (LWV), and address several unscripted inquiries from the public.

Similar to an event two weeks ago at the Ridgecrest Apartments, the candidates maintained cordial interaction with one another and the audience Tuesday night. Their focus differed, however, as each separated themselves and conveyed distinct messages.

Forum moderator Lucy Heller, who sits on the Northern Valley LWV, posed standard questions to the candidates, asking them for opinions on Ridgewood’s pressing issues: the Valley Hospital expansion plan, downtown housing proposals and Central Business District parking, among other topics.

Resident-submitted questions and issues, which were filtered by Heller, included the development of the former Schedler tract and future safeguarding of municipal funds, in light of the theft of $460,000 in parking meter coins. Several queries raised during an open public portion covered the candidates’ prior municipal voting history and time commitment and their stances on flooding concerns.
