New Jersey Taxes Could Eat Up All Of Peyton Manning’s Super Bowl Earnings

New Jersey Taxes Could Eat Up All Of Peyton Manning’s Super Bowl Earnings

This is a guest post from K. Sean Packard, CPA, who is Director of Tax at OFS. He specializes in tax planning and the preparation of tax returns for pro athletes. He can be reached at [email protected] and on Twitter at @AthleteTax.

Peyton Manning has the opportunity to pull a John Elway and ride off into the sunset as a Denver Bronco after winning his second ring, not that he wants to retire. His career will hinge upon an offseason exam on his surgically-repaired neck, according to ESPN ’s Chris Mortensen. Obviously, the most important implication of the exam will be Manning’s health. But whether his career continues will have an effect on how much tax New Jersey can collect from him for his appearance in the Super Bowl XLVIII.

Should the Broncos beat the Seahawks, Manning—and the rest of his teammates—will earn $92,000. The loser’s share in the Super Bowl is $46,000. So why does Manning’s future beyond February 2 matter to New Jersey? It would seem logical that the Garden State would apply its tax rates on the $92,000 or $46,000 Manning earns for his week in East Rutherford. Unfortunately, we are dealing with tax laws, not logic.

State of the Union addresses Drinking Game

The Executive Authority to Take a Drink: Reason’s 2014 SOTU Drinking Game
Peter Suderman|Jan. 28, 2014 2:21 pm

State of the Union addresses are sometimes described as laundry lists, but President Obama’s speech last year was more of a wish list — a series of hopeful ideas, most of which had little to no chance of ever going anywhere.

https://reason.com/blog/2014/01/28/the-executive-authority-to-take-a-drink

Take a drink, and click a link, any time President Obama…

Mentions inequality. Take another if, in the same sentence, he refers to “the wealthiest Americans.” Chug the rest of the bottle if he mentions “the 1 percent.”
Describes government spending as an investment.
Talks about economic mobility without noting that mobility has not changed in fifty years.
Forgets to apologize for lying when he said that people who liked their doctors and their health plans could keep them under Obamacare.
Says the words “nation building at home.”
Falsely insists that there’s no evidence of any abuses of power at the National Security Agency.
Grudgingly admits that the surveillance state may have gone too far—but calls for weak reforms that won’t rein in its power.
Credits Obamacare for its Medicaid enrollment, despite the fact that we have no idea how many Medicaid enrollees since October are for people who are newly eligible under the law.
Mentions Syria, which Obama wanted to bomb, and then (thank goodness!) didn’t.
Says anything interesting about foreign policy.
Falsely presents something as a false choice.
Starts any sentence with the words, “Let me be clear.” Double shot if it’s an ad-lib not in the prepared text.

Finally, take a drink any time the cameras cut away to Chad Henderson, the Obamacare poster boy who told reporters he was among the first to sign up under the law but hadn’t actually enrolled in health insurance. He says he’ll be there, as a guest of Texas GOP Rep. Steve Stockman.

As always, Reason encourages drinking responsibly. How else will you know when a politician is trying to pull one over on you?

Ridgewood NJ, A Honda CR-V crashed through a 6-foot high chain link fence at the Somerville Elementary School’s athletic field on South Pleasant Avenue in Ridgewood late Tuesday afternoon.  It is believed the driver lost control of the vehicle after she drove over a speed hump, hit a patch of ice, then bounced off of a curb.  At least one air bag in the vehicle deployed; the driver was quite shaken up, but otherwise uninjured.  There were no pedestrians present in the area at the time of the accident.  The vehicle was removed by a flatbed tow truck.  The incident remains under investigation by Ridgewood PD.

SECAUCUS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — With the Super Bowl XLVIII just days away, you’d never know it from the New Jersey side of this two-part equation.

Some lawmakers say the NFL hasn’t endorsed any of its events, leaving New Jersey out of the spotlight and in the cold, CBS 2’s Emily Smith reported Monday.

While the big game is being held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., some Jersey leaders said they are worried that the league hasn’t gotten the memo that this is not New York City’s Super Bowl.

“It’s just not a feeling of … it’s almost like not wanting to be here,” Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli said of the NFL.

With the Super Bowl just days away, New York City is clearly ready, turning Times Square into an official NFL-sanctioned Super Bowl zone.

Meanwhile in New Jersey you can’t find a banner or sign with the words “Super Bowl” on it. New Jersey lawmakers say it’s because the NFL hasn’t recognized their events, and therefore they can’t use the official name “Super Bowl.”

Super Bowl ticket prices plummet

600-1

Super Bowl ticket prices plummet
By Jeane MacIntosh
January 27, 2014 | 11:41pm

So much for being the most expensive Super Bowl ever.

With ticket prices in a freefall, seats for Sunday’s MetLife Stadium matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos could end up being the least expensive for a Super Bowl since the post-9/11 game of 2002.

After hitting record highs last week, ticket prices took a nose dive over the weekend, with the cheapest prices plummeting nearly 50 percent, to a low of $1,150 from about $2,200 at 9 a.m. on Jan. 19.

While the cold weather had been a concern, that’s now been factored into prices and isn’t expected to have much of an effect going forward, unless there is a snowstorm, market watchers said.

Instead, limited travel demand by fans of the two Western teams, a glut of available tickets and sluggish interest in the New York metropolitan area are contributing to the tailspin.

More than 18,000 tickets remained available on the secondary market Monday.

Tax Reform: The First Step Is Simple

Tax Reform: The First Step Is Simple
January 27, 2014 9:10AM
By Chris Edwards

New leadership is coming to the congressional tax-writing committees. Ron Wyden will be taking the helm of Senate Finance and Paul Ryan will be likely taking the helm of Ways and Means. This is good news, as both gentlemen are serious legislators and very interested in major tax reform.

One thing they should tackle is the personal income tax, which is a complex and high-rate mess. It should be restructured into a simple flat tax.

However, the most urgent needed reform is to slash the corporate income tax rate. Policymakers should put aside changes to deductions, credits, and loopholes for now. Those tax base issues are a diversion and policy quagmire, as the R&D credit illustrates. It is far more important to just cut the statutory corporate rate, which would automatically reduce the effects of tax-base distortions and make it politically easier to reform the tax base later on.

Our current high-rate policy is harming the U.S. economy, reducing job growth, and stifling wages—for no good reason. Abolition is a good long-term goal for corporate income tax reform, but we can start with at least chopping our federal-state rate of 40 percent down to the global average of 24 percent.

The charts show KPMG data for top statutory corporate income tax rates in 2013. KPMG shows UAE with the highest rate in the world at 55 percent. However, that rate just applies to foreign banks and foreign oil companies. So I don’t show UAE since the reported rate is not the general corporate rate.

That leaves the United States with the highest general corporate tax rate in the world, and that makes no sense in today’s competitive global economy.

Ridgewood Police  remind motorist that working on the roadside is a dangerous and sometimes deadly job.

That’s why the Division of Highway Traffic Safety is asking motorists to Make the Move.

What’s the Move? When you see flashing lights on the side of the road, slow down, and if it’s safe, Move Over – away from police, fire crews, paramedics and tow truck drivers. If you make the move, others will follow.

The Valley Hospital is in negotiations to buy the site in Paramus that global parcel distributor UPS is vacating, several commercial real estate sources said Monday.

The Ridgewood-based hospital, which has been scouting for land in Bergen County to expand its services, is looking to purchase UPS’ data-processing and software development facility on Winters Avenue, sources said.

The parcel distribution company’s site is at 640, 650 and 670 Winters Ave., not far from Route 17. That location is near a 128,000-square-foot facility Valley Hospital already has in Paramus, the Robert and Audrey Luckow Pavilion at 1 Valley Health Plaza, behind the Fashion Center shopping mall.

Mobil Cell Tower Update : Village Revenue Share

Mobil Cell Tower Update : Village Revenue Share

CELL TOWER UPDATE: A review of Village Council meeting minutes dating back to 2008 may provide the answer as to why the mobile AT&T tower was brought in.

What the meeting minutes reveal is that for years, several cell phone carriers have attempted to construct a new monopole style tower on property owned by the State of NJ on Franklin Turnpike. However, indications are that Village officials objected to this location because of the State’s unwillingness to share site rental revenue with the Village. Instead, several Village owned properties in the Route 17 corridor were offered as alternatives to the State of NJ owned property. Unfortunately for the Village, there were insurmountable technical issues with each of the alternative sites.

The State’s policy has been to reject construction of cell towers on their properties when objections are made by local government officials, So, due to the objection voiced by Ridgewood officials, a new cell tower can’t be built at the NJDOT facility on Franklin Turnpike (which seems to be the only location that offers the requisite ground space, and meets all technical parameters). Thus, the current holding pattern – and unusual risk taken by AT&T to keep their system functioning (the existing AT&T shared use tower in the construction company’s yard is unable to support equipment required for 4G service).

It is believed that construction of a new tower on State owned property would result in removal of the existing tower at the construction company yard. The Village would get property tax revenue despite the tower being built on State owned property (most likely more tax revenue – the new structure would be larger).

However, the Village would not get any of the site rental revenue, and that’s what this seems to all boil down to; we want our cake, and we want to eat it to. Why do Village officials feel the State of NJ should share site rental revenue with them? Would they expect the same of any property owner? Then why the State?

RIDGEWOOD — An illicit cell tower that has popped up behind a fill station in the village managed to go unnoticed by officials for months.

But now that the tower is on the village council’s radar, a pair of summonses has been issued to the owners of both the tower and the property upon which it sits.

“It was just rolled in and it stayed, and nobody has any information about this cell tower,” resident Diane Haderthauer explained to the village council at its most recent meeting.

Haderthauer said she brought the 100-foot-tall cell tower to the village’s attention via email a month after it went up.

Village officials have determined the temporary “test” tower belongs to AT&T and that the company’s testing the viability of installing a second tower at that location.

Evelyn Silva never saw it coming, and in one terrified and panicked instant, she rode into the abyss.

“Sometimes, you just don’t see it until the last second. And when you finally see it, there’s nothing you can do but hope and pray that no damage is done,” said Silva, a 24-year-old village resident whose 2012 Honda Civic was fortunately unscathed after it drove into one of the potholes that was haunting Oak Street Monday afternoon.

“I guess I was lucky driving in the middle of town. If I was on the highway going fast and hit a pothole like that, who knows what could have happened,” she added.

Running over a pothole, depending on its size, can result in various types of vehicle damage. Minor woes include lost hubcaps and warped wheel alignment, but impact might also puncture or completely blow out a tire. Then there’s more severe harm – premature wear on shocks and struts, bent axles and rims, and suspension and exhaust damage, for example.

Silicon Valley honcho compares ‘war on rich’ to Nazi regime
By Post Staff Report
January 27, 2014 | 11:06am

Silicon Valley venture capital pioneer Tom Perkins —co-founder of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers — is persona non grata for his comments that wealthy Americans are being victimized and persecution like the Jews in Nazi Germany.

Perkins, 82, wrote in the Wall Street Journal a letter to the editor published Friday:

“Regarding your editorial “Censors on Campus” (Jan. 18): Writing from the epicenter of progressive thought, San Francisco, I would call attention to the parallels of fascist Nazi Germany to its war on its “one percent,” namely its Jews, to the progressive war on the American one percent, namely the “rich.”

Kleiner Perkins said its co-founder’s views were not the views of the firm.

PSE&G Customers Urged to Conserve Electricity on Tuesday

PSE&G Customers Urged to Conserve Electricity on Tuesday
January 27, 2014

Another round of frigid weather pushes electricity use higher

(NEWARK, NJ – Jan. 27, 2014) – Due to another round of frigid temperatures and increased electric demand, PSE&G customers are asked to conserve electricity, if health permits, on Tuesday, especially from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The conservation request is being made to electric utilities throughout the region by PJM Interconnection, the electricity grid operator for more than 61 million people in 13 states and the District of Columbia.  PJM continues to carefully monitor power supplies, and will do everything possible to keep power flowing in the region.

To conserve energy, customers can follow these simple steps:

Set thermostats lower than usual, if health permits.
Postpone using major electric appliances such as stoves, dishwashers and clothes dryers until mid-day or after 9 p.m., when the demand for electricity decreases.
Turn off electric lights and appliances that you do not need or are not using.
Seal up openings around and under doors and windows.
Make sure all storm windows are down and tightly closed.
Close dampers in unused fireplaces.
Move furniture and drapes away from heating registers, radiators, and baseboard element covers.
Open any register or baseboard dampers.
Warm air systems – replace dirty/clogged air filters.
Steam systems – check for sufficient water levels in the sight glass.

PSE&G’s all-time peak winter demand for electricity was 7,195 megawatts set on February 5, 2007. Although Tuesday’s projected peak will be close, the utility does not expect to exceed the all-time demand.

The utility is also closely monitoring its gas system and taking steps to ensure it can meet the demands of customers. These steps include maintaining and adjusting pressure at various points in our system. PSE&G also has extra gas personnel on hand to respond as quickly as possible and handle emergency heating requests. During the cold snap on Jan. 7, PSE&G set a new peak for gas delivery by delivering 29,715,350 therms to customers.
