Robert Menendez says he’s fighting a smear campaign against ‘ridiculous’ allegations

JERSEY CITY — Saying he was the target of a yearlong “false smear campaign,” U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez on Friday blasted a television news report that said he allegedly used his office to help campaign contributors.

At events in his native Hudson County, the Democrat said he treated Roberto and William Isaias — banking magnates from Ecuador accused of embezzling more than $100 million before fleeing to the United States — like hundreds of other immigrants who came to his office seeking help.

In a report Thursday night, WNBC-TV, quoting anonymous sources, said federal authorities were conducting a criminal investigation into whether the influential senator made efforts in 2012 to win the brothers permanent residency by contacting officials at the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State in exchange for campaign contributions from the brothers’ relatives.

Menendez called the allegations “ridiculous.”

“A year after a false smear campaign was launched against me, once again we see anonymous sources,” Menendez, who now chairs the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, said at a campaign event for U.S. Rep. Albio Sires (D-8th Dist.) in Jersey City. “I wish we had these sources quoted. I’d like them to come forth.” (Friedman/Star-Ledger)

Is Your Child in the Right School?

Is Your Child in the Right School?
Amy Payne
January 27, 2014 at 6:30 am

South Carolina mom Lisa Stevens wasn’t satisfied with her child’s school. Then she heard about charter schools and discovered she could get a group of people together and start one.

Nathan, a second-grader in Arizona with a learning disability, is thriving in a small class with teachers who are able to give him the attention he needs. His parents discovered they could choose the right program for Nathan because Arizona has Education Savings Accounts.

School choice doesn’t look the same for everyone—because learning doesn’t look the same for everyone. This week, kids and parents who have found the right combinations are celebrating National School Choice Week—and it’s the perfect time for you to learn more about your family’s options.

The old way of doing K-12 education—every child put into the same public system—hasn’t worked out. But school choice has returned control of education to the local units where it belongs: the family and the individual school. School choice has proven to produce better academic outcomes, significantly increased graduation rates, improved student safety, and higher parental satisfaction with their children’s education.

This week, we’ll be highlighting school choice success stories on The Foundry. Here are some of the ways students and parents are achieving success:

Charter schools. Watch our video to hear Lisa’s story of starting a charter school.

Education Savings Accounts (ESAs). Check out this slideshow of families who are customizing their children’s learning thanks to Arizona’s ESAs.

Vouchers. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, which gives students from low-income families vouchers to attend private schools in the nation’s capital. These students are seeing success like never before thanks to this program.

Online learning. Students can access educational opportunities that aren’t available in their geographic areas, thanks to all the online innovation taking place.

Homeschooling. Parents and students have freedom and flexibility to pursue the type of education they want for their families. School choice is working—but it’s up to all of us to make sure government doesn’t stand in the way of these exciting developments. Visit The Foundry each day this week to learn more.

There may be a School Choice Week event going on in your area. Check out the website.

Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks Set Up 420 Super Bowl

Ed Krayewski|Jan. 19, 2014 10:51 pm

The Columbian/via TwitterThe Seattle Seahawks came from behind in the fourth quarter against the San Francisco 49ers in tonight’s NFC championship game, joining the Denver Broncos, who defeated the New England Patriots in the earlier AFC championship game, in heading to the Super Bowl. Both teams hail from states, Washington and Colorado, that legalized marijuana at the ballot box in 2012. Recreational marijuana went on sale at government-licensed shops in Colorado at the start of this year. But you won’t be able to light up at the Super Bowl, being held in two weeks in New Jersey (with an assist from the NYPD), where recreational marijuana remains prohibited and the implementation of medical marijuana is going on at a snail’s pace.

Reader says Menendez always seems willing to align his votes with the highest bidders

I was in Ecuador last year and this issue came up again and again. The people of Ecuador lost billions while a small group with insider knowledge profited and found refuge in Florida. I am not surprised that Menendez is under investigation as he always seems willing to align his votes with the highest bidders.

Google Menendez and AIPAC campaign donations and you will see perhaps why Mr Menendez is leading efforts to sabotage talks with Iran.

Authoritarianism Persists Around the World, But Not Because of an American “Crisis of Confidence”
Jesse Walker|Jan. 24, 2014 11:04 am

Freedom House’s annual report came out this week, and it’s pretty glum. Here’s how the organization’s announcement of its findings begins:

The state of freedom declined for the eighth consecutive year in 2013, according to Freedom in the World 2014, Freedom House’s annual country-by-country report on global political rights and civil liberties.

Particularly notable were developments in Egypt, which endured across-the-board reversals in its democratic institutions following a military coup. There were also serious setbacks to democratic rights in other large, politically influential countries, including Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Venezuela, and Indonesia.

The report itself notes that “the overall level of regression was not severe,” with 40 countries getting freer and 54 getting more authoritarian. Freedom House’s list of which countries are “free,” “partly free,” or “not free” hasn’t changed much: The number of countries in the “free” category declined by two, and the numbers in the other categories went up by one apiece. The number of electoral democracies actually increased by four. So while there’s plenty of bad news here, the situation isn’t as dire as that lede suggests.

HSBC imposes restrictions on large cash withdrawals
24 January 2014 Last updated at 14:59 ET
By Bob Howard Reporter, Money Box

Some HSBC customers have been prevented from withdrawing large amounts of cash because they could not provide evidence of why they wanted it, the BBC has learnt.

Listeners have told Radio 4’s Money Box they were stopped from withdrawing amounts ranging from £5,000 to £10,000.

HSBC admitted it has not informed customers of the change in policy, which was implemented in November.

The bank says it has now changed its guidance to staff.

Behind the glamour, fanfare and excitement of the first Super Bowl to be played in New Jersey stands one of the largest coordinated law enforcement efforts ever assembled in the region to ensure that nothing — not a terrorist, a shooter or a bomber — disrupts the fans’ experience.

Some 100 law enforcement agencies have been working for two years to develop a comprehensive security plan for the game, which will draw an estimated 80,000 fans to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford next Sunday.

Menendez unaware of probe into his ties to former Ecuadorean bankers

U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez said Friday that he is unaware of any federal investigation into his interactions with a pair of former Ecuadorean bankers living in the United States.

“I am not aware of any official inquiry in this matter,” he said, a day after NBC New York reported that the U.S. Justice Department was looking into the Democratic senator’s ties to the bankers.

The Record and Herald News were unable to confirm on Friday whether an investigation was under way.

The two former bankers, brothers named Roberto and William Isaias, have lived in Florida since 2000. They fled Ecuador after their bank, Filibanco, one of the country’s largest financial institutions, collapsed amid a banking crisis in the late 1990s.

Ecuadorean officials have sought extradition of the two men for more than a decade. The country accuses them of embezzling hundreds of millions of dollars of bailout money before fleeing to Florida. In 2008, Ecuador seized hundreds of assets belonging to the brothers, including several television stations. The Ecuadorean government said it was trying to recoup some of the money taken by the Isaiases, but critics contend that the move was an attempt to tighten government control over the South American country’s news media.

British Museum: Prototype for Noah’s Ark was round

British Museum: Prototype for Noah’s Ark was round
By JILL LAWLESS
Associated Press

LONDON (AP) — It was a vast boat that saved two of each animal and a handful of humans from a catastrophic flood.

But forget all those images of a long vessel with a pointy bow – the original Noah’s Ark, new research suggests, was round.

A recently deciphered 4,000-year-old clay tablet from ancient Mesopotamia – modern-day Iraq – reveals striking new details about the roots of the Old Testament tale of Noah. It tells a similar story, complete with detailed instructions for building a giant round vessel known as a coracle – as well as the key instruction that animals should enter “two by two.”

The tablet went on display at the British Museum on Friday, and soon engineers will follow the ancient instructions to see whether the vessel could actually have sailed.

Another snowy, frigid day in North Jersey still beckons many outside

When winter has you in its grip, there’s a choice: stay inside and escape it, or go outside and embrace it.

With temperatures stuck below freezing for the fourth consecutive day and a mix of snow and sleet coating the ground, the preference of many on Saturday was evidently a trek to the Great Indoors.

But for a hearty handful, there was enough fun to be had on snowpack to forget the bone-chilling temperatures.

“It was all her idea,” said Lucas Kovalcik of Glen Rock, as he hopped aboard a sled with his 5-year-old daughter Ella, at Citizen’s Park in Ridgewood. The little girl had packed the plastic sled with snow — “She likes to lie on top of the snow,” her father said — and they glided down the hill through a gap between two trees to the bottom.

Kovalcik was clearly in touch with his inner child as he trudged back up the hill with his daughter for another go.
