Police officers from neighboring towns mobilized Friday to support their grieving Waldwick colleagues, providing 24-hour coverage for the borough so that the town’s officers could mourn the sudden death of 32-year-old Patrolman Christopher Goodell.
Waldwick’s police cruisers remained parked at headquarters while officers from nearby towns answered all emergency calls. And they will continue to do so until Wednesday morning, the day after Goodell’s funeral.
“It’s the natural thing,” Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward said. “Our guys are volunteering to be there. These are the events you never, ever need to ask people to step up for.”
Goodell, a decorated Marine Corps veteran who joined the Waldwick force five years ago, was killed around 1:30 a.m. Thursday when a tractor-trailer rammed into his parked police car on the shoulder of Route 17 while he was conducting a radar patrol.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett issued the following statement upon hearing the tragic news of an accident that took the life of Waldwick police officer and United States Marine Corps veteran Christopher Goodell:
“I was deeply saddened this morning to hear the tragic news of the accident that took the life of Waldwick police officer and United States Marine Corps veteran Christopher Goodell. As both a law enforcement officer and marine, Officer Goodell displayed a deep dedication to his country and his community. Public service is a calling, and answering that call is truly a virtue. My thoughts and prayers are with Officer Goodell’s family, friends, and the Waldwick community as they mourn the loss of one of their bravest sons.”

The procession will enter Waldwick from Wyckoff, via Wyckoff Avenue. It will continue on Wyckoff Avenue to Hopper Avenue and turn left; continue to Franklin Turnpike in Allendale and make a right; continue to Grove Street and make a left turn; right turn onto Centre Street and a right turn onto E.Prospect Street. The procession will stop for a brief pause in front of the Public Safety Building, before making a left turn onto Franklin Turnpike and continuing to St. Luke’s Church. Visitation will begin at approximately 2pm. It is recommended that anyone wishing to view the procession should assemble in front of Waldwick High School or in the area of the Public Safety Building.
Over the past several days, we have been preparing for Officer Goodell’s services with the assistance of countless local and county agencies. The wake will be from 2pm to 9pm on Monday and the Funeral Mass will be at 11am on Tuesday, both at St. Luke’s Church in HoHoKus. It is anticipated that several thousand people will be paying their respects to Officer Goodell on Monday and Tuesday. That being said, traffic and parking are going to be issues that we all need to contend with. There will be traffic delays and periodic road closures. We have arranged for Bergen Community College to be the main parking area for anyone wishing to attend the services. Buses will be available to transport people to and from St. Luke’s Church. We have made special parking and transportation accommodations for Waldwick residents only. In order to ease our transportation concerns, we are asking that everyone adhere to the plans that we have prepared.

WALDWICK – Police are warning residents to travel in pairs after two men reportedly tried to get an adult female jogging on Douglas Street on Sunday morning to get into their car.
The 40-year-old woman was running about 10 a.m. when a black Nissan pulled up beside her with two male occupants who tried to coax her into the car, said Waldwick Det. Sgt Douglas J. Moore.
“She declined and continued on her run, yelling to another woman on the street to call police,” Moore said.
The woman told police the men were white, in their 20s, and one had long dark hair, Moore said. The car had darkened windows, he said.
“They made no effort to exit the car,” Moore said. “They left the area once she declined.”
The luring follows two reported attempts on Oct. 25 and last Friday in Ridgewood near George Washington Middle School.

The boy is 9 months old and will never know his mother. His father, if convicted of her murder, faces life in prison.
Now a judge must decide who will raise baby Mark, the son of Mary Greff and Mark Spatucci, a young Waldwick couple whose passionate relationship was strained by parenthood and ended in tragedy.
The infant was living with his mother at the Waldwick home of the now-retired couple who had adopted Mary Greff. The baby was asleep, apparently, in a bassinet in the same bedroom, when Spatucci allegedly climbed through a second-floor window late on Tuesday.
Prosecutors say that Spatucci and Greff, 23, argued before he strangled her and fled out the same window.

They met two years ago, introduced by mutual friends, and quickly fell in love. But friends said Mary Greff and Mark Spatucci’s passionate relationship became complicated after their baby was born in February and ultimately unraveled amid arguments over child support and custody of the infant.
Now Spatucci, 22, is in custody, charged with murder in the strangling of Greff, a 23-year-old former beauty pageant contestant. She was slain in a bedroom at her parents’ home on Mary Lane in Waldwick as the couple’s 9-month-old baby slept nearby in a bassinet, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a statement on Thursday.

A 23-year-old single mother and former beauty pageant contestant was found dead on Wednesday afternoon after apparently being strangled at her parents’ home in Waldwick, with her baby lying unharmed in a bassinet nearby, authorities said.
Mary Greff, who gave birth to a baby boy in February, was found by her father at 1 p.m. in a second-floor bedroom of the house on Mary Lane, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said at the scene. Her infant son appears to have been alone for hours because police said they believe she died sometime in the early morning hours on Wednesday.
“An autopsy is yet to be performed, but the death has been ruled a homicide due to evidence of strangulation/asphyxiation,” Molinelli said in a statement on Wednesday night
