Ridgewood NJ, according to Boyd Loving in a Facebook post, ” It’s official. Barring approval of an estimated $4 million improvement project to widen Glenwood Road, that street will become one-way eastbound (vehicular traffic from Ridgewood to Ho-Ho-Kus only) within the next 6-12 months. The one-way change/designation for vehicles is being mandated by the NJDOT in conjunction with their plans to upgrade the NJ Transit grade level rail crossing at the bottom of the hill. Village and Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus elected officials fought NJDOT on the issue, but NJDOT is refusing to budge citing numerous safety hazards associated with the continuation of two-way vehicular traffic at the grade level rail crossing.”
That only took 2 years…
Unreal.
What a bunch of snowflakes.
Learn to drive.
It’s a switchback. Has noone dealt with a hill?
I don’t go this route that often but I sure see plenty of pics of stuck bus, semi truck, landscaping truck, etc on the tracks over the years. What I hear anecdotally from friends that live on Upper Blvd and use this road extensively is that there are plenty of K-turns right in front of or even involving the road over the tracks (drop spouse at the train?) so it is not just the hill. Just plain bad driving.
There’s no reason for this. The hill easily accommodates multiple people as long as everyone is driving properly.

I think they should shut it down completely. Keep it open for emergency vehicles only. It was made for horse and buggy not cars. It was OK in the 30s for the model a that’s about it. Not today with all these large SUVs. Trucks, landscapers, too lazy to go around. Maybe put a zip line on the top of Glenwood right to the train station that would be pretty cool. Or maybe New Jersey transit will put an elevator in for you.
The key is people driving properly. I was there when an idiot in a Ford explorer Tried to make a u turn, got caught on the tracks and hit by a train. Sometimes you do have to protect people from themselves. Also saw numerous cars go around the gates. Judging by the fact they were luxury machines obviously west side residents and charter members of It Takes a Ridgewood Village.
Dumb
Dumb to buy a ford .
Leveling is wise, but leave this thruway to keep our errands and time on the road shorter. It continues to keep drivers safe by less time on the road which means less traffic on another route and of course less time in a vehicle means less pollution. Less time in the car is safer for the driver and anyone in the vehicle. Less time in the road means greater productivity. Less time wasted sitting in traffic because of this one way suggestion. Anyone who drives big suvs who are locals probably already know about this shortcut and more than likely avoid it if they feel uncomfortable manipulating the shortcut. But don’t take it away from all the residents who benefit from it.
Why protect people from themselves? Darwin rules. Don’t kill all the stupid people – just remove all the warning labels and let the problem work itself out…

How did the village get caught so off guard when the DOT started talking about the changes? Why wasn’t the village more aware?
They were they just don’t give a shit. Why should day it’s not their property. They don’t want to pay for it. Don’t you know how they work already.
Caught off guard?
This has been brewing for years.
And it’s about time something was done about all the issues. DRIVE AROUND.
i’ve been driving that road up and down that road since 1977. Nowadays the soccer moms can’t navigate their huge loads on the turn and never ever stay on their side of the road. Then when you are approaching them from the opposite side, they freeze in mid turn and stop. Of course they are on your side of the road and basically cut off any hope of you driving past them. I’m glad it will be ONE WAY!
