Teaneck NJ, A late-night car burglary spree in Bergen County came to an abrupt end early Sunday morning after alert residents and rapid police coordination led to a dramatic foot chase through a wooded residential neighborhood.
At approximately 4:15 AM on Sunday, a Teaneck resident called 911 after spotting two males dressed completely in black clothing and wearing masks walking near Cooper Avenue.
Teaneck Police Chief Andrew McGurr confirmed that responding Sgt. Mathew Carratura arrived on the scene to find two individuals matching the description near a parked Honda. The suspects immediately fled in opposite directions upon seeing the patrol vehicle.
Wooded Foot Chase and Backyard K-9 Perimeter
The emergency response escalated rapidly into a coordinated tracking operation across town lines:
-
The First Arrest: Sgt. Carratura pursued and apprehended a 17-year-old juvenile suspect following a brief, high-intensity foot chase into a nearby wooded area.
-
The Perimeter Hunt: Additional police units established a tight perimeter. Officers from the Englewood Police Department and a Bergen County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit systematically combed the neighborhood.
-
The Second Arrest: The second suspect, identified as 18-year-old Derise Martinez of Englewood, was successfully located hiding in the backyard of a residential property on Lorraine Avenue. He was taken into custody without further incident.
High-Value Vehicle Tech Stolen
Upon searching the suspects, investigators discovered a haul of stolen items belonging to local Teaneck residents, including cash, wallets, headphones, credit cards, and multiple high-end Honda vehicle sensors.
What Are Vehicle Sensor Modules? Local authorities explained that these specific sensor modules are integral components of high-tech vehicle safety and driver-assistance systems—such as adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance. Thieves frequently target them because they are easily accessible in front grilles, behind manufacturer emblems, or inside front bumper assemblies, carrying high resale value on the black market.
Police also recovered burglary tools, gloves, face masks, and an open knife at the scene.
Serious Charges Handed Down
Derise Martinez was booked into the Bergen County Corrections and Rehabilitation Center and faces an extensive list of charges:
-
Employing a juvenile in the commission of a crime
-
Burglary & Conspiracy
-
4 counts of theft & 11 counts of receiving stolen property
-
Criminal mischief & Credit card theft
-
Unlawful possession of a weapon (and possession for an unlawful purpose)
-
Possession of burglary tools
The 17-year-old juvenile was hit with a delinquency complaint and released into the custody of a parent.
