Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood is currently in Stage ll water restrictions ,until further notice, Ridgewood Water is not accepting applications or granting any exceptions. All pre-approved waivers are now void.

Stage II  (Severe) – Mandatory restriction of irrigation to Tuesdays and Saturdays for properties with odd-numbered addresses and Wednesdays and Sundays for properties with even-numbered addresses.  No irrigation shall be allowed on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays except for the use of a hand held hose. Irrigation using a hand held hose shall be allowed at any time.

Stage II water restrictions are currently in place for Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Midland Park, and Wyckoff, New Jersey are in effect beginning June 23, 2016 until further notice.

Residents, businesses, governmental agencies, and all other water users must adhere to Stage II of the restrictions shown on our website,water.ridgewoodnj.net.

If your address is an odd number, you may irrigate on Tuesdays and Saturdays only. If your address is an even number, you may irrigate on Wednesdays and Sundays only. A handheld hose may be used at any time including Mondays. No irrigation is allowed on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays except the use of a hand held hose.

The restriction level had to be increased to Stage II because water is being consumed at a greater rate than the supply system can sustain, thus reducing the amount of water in reserve for fire fighting and other emergencies.

Compliance with the Stage II restrictions will reduce the likelihood that more severe controls will be needed. Your cooperation is appreciated. Violators will be subject to a fine and court appearance

Leak Detection

A leak can waste large amounts of water; up to 20 gallons a day for slow drips and hundreds of gallons a day for both toilet and faucet leaks. Some leaks are easily detected while others are not so obvious. Any leak, big or small, can be very costly and wasteful and should be repaired as soon as possible.

Water meters are equipped to assist you in leak detection. Turn off all faucets, water-demanding appliances, and outdoor hoses, etc. Be sure no one is using any water. The water meters feature a “leak detector”. To check if the meter detects a leak, shine a light on the top of the meter next to the flashlight icon to activate the display. After a startup sequence, the screen will cycle between the current reading and the current flow rate. As shown in the photo below, the word RATE appears with 3 digits below it. These digits represent the current rate in gallons per minute of water going through the meter. If the leak has been ongoing, the meter will also display a small faucet icon.

If the meter indicates that you have a leak, inspect all fixtures, appliances, and pipes to locate it, keeping in mind that there may be more than one source of leakage. Sometimes a leak may be hidden in the underground piping. If you believe this to be the case, call a plumber for advice. The meter can also provide further assistance in understanding your consumption. By request, Ridgewood Water will download a detailed log of your consumption for the past 96 days. Ridgewood Water needs physical access to the meter to perform this service. Please call our Customer Service department to schedule an appointment.

Summer Water Restrictions

Stage I will be in effect each year starting on June 1st and will continue through August 31st.  If conditions warrant, irrigation will be prohibited on additional days of the week up to and including a total ban on irrigation.

Compliance with the initial restrictions will reduce the likelihood that more severe controls will be needed.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

Stage I  (Moderate) – Mandatory restriction of irrigation to Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays for properties with odd-numbered addresses and Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays for properties with even-numbered addresses.  Irrigation using a hand-held hose shall be allowed at any time. No irrigation shall be allowed on Mondays except for the use of a hand held hose.

Stage III  (Pending/Critical) – Mandatory restriction of irrigation to the use of a hand held hose on Tuesdays and Saturdays for properties with odd-numbered addresses and Wednesdays and Sundays for properties with even-numbered addresses.  No irrigation of any kind shall be allowed on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays.

Stage IV  (Critical) – Irrigation is prohibited at any time. Exceptions for irrigation using a hand held hose may be allowed under conditions prescribed by the Village Manager of the Village of Ridgewood.

Here’s the hourly wage you’d need to afford a 2-bedroom rental in every state in 2016

Filed by April Lavalle | May 27, 2016 @ 12:48pm

New Jersey is $26.52 per hour , New York is $26.69 , Connecticut is $24.72 , Pennsylvania is $18.27

The National Low Income Housing Coalition has released their yearly findings on what hourly wage an American needs to make in order to rent a two-bedroom unit in each state based off a forty hour work week, and compared to last year’s findings, this year is looking even more bleak.

With the cost of housing rising annually, Americans are struggling more than ever to keep a roof over their heads. As of last year, the demand for rental apartments in the US has reached the highest number since the 60’s, and still, many Americans, especially poor people and people of color, have not yet recovered from the economic recession. To make matters worse, millennials are now at the age where they would start buying homes, but more are choosing to rent, creating even more demand and further proving that millennials screw everything up. With demand skyrocketing and Americans struggling to make enough money to keep up, housing costs have inflated to the point where many can’t afford a place to live. Well, you know what they say.

Reader says I love dogs more than people. And I say no

Vicious_dog_theridgewoodblog

I love dogs more than people. And I say no.

We have eliminated large swaths of wooded areas. When I was a kid, about 100 years ago, my dog ran free with me. Didn’t bother anyone. Now with our limited parks, they should be saved for walkers and kids playing games, etc. But maybe we could have one park for dogs and their owners. Not all of them.

But really let’s save the parks for walkers and runners who want to exercise without stress and enjoy the parks without worry about dogs approaching them.

I mean even crossing a street is stressful now with all the traffic and the way people drive. . It is imperative to keep the parks dog free. Dogs do run up to strangers, or walk up to sniff and it is stressful. Parks are for people to enjoy. People need some place to walk without worry about cars or dogs.

I love it when I have the opportunity to babysit a family dog; I even feel sorry that the dog can’t run and explore in a park; but people come first. Again, maybe one park. Maybe not.

Reader says No, let’s NOT give up a park to dogs!

Cat on Porch Ridgewood

No, let’s NOT give up a park to dogs! Imagine how well that would turn out! Our parks are for people. They have already been given up to sports diamonds and fields and fences, and when that particular sport isn’t in season, the place is a waste. Speaking of waste, what would be the criterion indicating that such an experiment had failed? Lawsuits from dog bites (inevitable)? Dog litter all over the place (laughably inevitable)? Are we really expecting any follow-up at all from the town for this when we get it for nothing else? People who merely felt intimidated or uncomfortable or allergic regarding the omnipresence of canines would not complain, but probably just stop going to the park. Is that fair? Dog owners are not uniformly respectful of other people and do not consistently keep their dogs in tow. I would hate being sniffed at, run after, leg-humped, and slobbered on or to watch it happen to others, or to have to extricate myself from a long leash–that happens already. Dogs smell, shed, and trail menstrual blood. And bark. Sorry, people, dogs are not people! Some towns may allow this, but plenty forbid dogs in parks. If we changed our ordinance, people from those towns would all come here with their dogs! This is NOT far fetched (to coin a phrase). When a reasonable ordinance is not respected, you don’t rewrite the ordinance–you enforce it. That’s the real answer: give tickets to dog owners outside the dog runs, which they are lucky to have. NO DOGS.

Reader says No need to change the ordinance, just keep bringing your dogs like you already are doing only please remember to clean up after them

Van Neste Ridgewood

The reality is that there are dogs in all the town parks every day, ordinance notwithstanding. Look at Habernickel, dogs run up there on and off leash. People walk their dogs through Van Neste and people congregate at Brookside field to let their dogs run loose and at any given ball game parents are on the sidelines with the family dogs. The ordinance is completely ignored just like so many of the stupid laws that exist in this town. No need to change the ordinance, just keep bringing your dogs like you already are doing only please remember to clean up after them. And oh by the way throw away your soda cans and candy wrappers in garbage cans while you are at it.

Reader says It is Time for Ridgewood to Appeal the Valley Ruling

Valleywood_theridgewoodblog

Appeal, yes, but the town may also wish to obtain a stay the part of the ruling that requires the Council to adopt the specified ordinance. The latter is no mean feat. Final judgments and orders from New Jersey Superior Court trial court judges are extremely difficult to “dislodge”. Appellate Division judges have to practically be charmed to within an inch of their lives before agreeing to block implementation of a trial court’s judgment pending final appellate disposition. The whole system is more or less designed to front load power at the trial court level rather than at the apellate level. Hard to see why things must be arranged this way but thems the facts and Ridgewood must deal with them squarely.

Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood Police Department officers used a hand held forcible entry tool to break a crashed Volvo SUV’s passenger side window in order aid a driver who collapsed after suffering an undisclosed medical condition. The incident occurred at approximately 6 PM on Thursday, 07/07, at the intersection of East Ridgewood Avenue and Heermance Place, Ridgewood. A passerby called 911 to report seeing a vehicle with no driver careen off of East Ridgewood Avenue, up a curb, over a sidewalk, and into a line of shrubbery.

First arriving Patrol Officer Salvatore D’Amico spotted the SUV and immediately observed a driver slumped behind the wheel of the locked vehicle. While D’Amico kept the adult male victim in plain view and tried to engage him in conversation, backup officers arrived and broke the passenger side window and unlocked all doors. Ridgewood FD and EMS crews attended to the victim along with a paramedic team from The Valley Hospital. The victim, a Ridgewood resident, was transported by ambulance to The Valley Hospital. The Volvo was removed by a flatbed tow truck.
