The Children’s Therapy Center (CTC) is presenting “The Art of Ability” at The Stable in Ridgewood through Jan. 29.

“Beautiful View””Fireworks””The Looking Glass”

The Children’s Therapy Center is a state-approved, not-for-profit private school with locations in Fair Lawn and Midland Park that provides educational and therapeutic services for children with multiple disabilities from 18 months through 16 years – children who are in need of very specialized services as a result of major medical issues, genetic disorders, neurological problems and chromosomal abnormalities. The Oakland campus will expand facilities and programs to accommodate and serve children through age 21 at the newly renovated 39,000-square-foot campus in Oakland.

“This is an important fundraiser as it helps during this critical time in our expansion to raise funds for the new Upper School in Oakland scheduled to open in September 2016,” said Audra Hoffman, director of development.

Helene Zgagowski has been a Ridgewood resident for 13 years and is having her first solo art show this month at the Stable.

“Diverse environments and the richness of the life around me inspire my work,” she said calling the exhibit, “a little glimpse of my life.”

“Whether it is in nature or riding horses, or spending time with family and friends, these are the things that give me joy,” explained the artist. “I’ve been there, done that and lived a good life, and I want to capture these moments forever and what better way than painting these memories on canvas.”

Born in Belgium, her Russian immigrant parents came to the United States sponsored by Tolstoy Farm in New York State. The family later moved to New Jersey.

Zgagowski studied at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art and Montclair State University – Fine Arts. She has also studied oil painting at the Fair Lawn Art League under Pauline Campanelli and at the Ridgewood Art Institute. She studied pottery at the Mudworks Company and jewelry making at the Art School at Old Church.

Dana Abel’s exhibit, “Ten Years – A Retrospective – Oil and Pastel Works” is at the Cottage Place Gallery in Ridgewood through Dec. 6.

A Ridgewood resident since 1994, Abel, a professional software developer, says painting was always her primary interest and once her youngest child reached teenage years, she started taking numerous painting classes and workshops. She studied pastel privately with Christina Debarry and oil with Aleksandra K. Nowak and with Basil Baylin and Joe Hing Lowe at the Ridgewood Art Institute. Since entering her first exhibition in 2003, Abel has received numerous awards at the local and national levels.

“Pastel is more immediate – quick and it is easier to see the final outcome,” she said. Featured pastels are: “Blue Vase,” “Daisies,” a RAI 28th Regional Open Jury Show award winner, “Gladioli,” and a portrait, “Redhead,” an early work.

The Ridgewood Guild is giving residents an opportunity to take in cultural programs, free of charge, on several evenings throughout the summer.

One such program is Music in the Night, a live music performance hosted by the Guild each Friday.

The event, which takes place primarily outside Guild businesses, features musicians of all sorts, “from soloists to five-piece groups and in between,” according to the organization’s president, Tony Damiano.

The performers also range in age, with 11-year-old Jake Thistle being the youngest thus far, Damiano said. Many students from Ridgewood High School also grace the stage.

Adult student artists are showing off at the Stable’s gallery this month what they have learned from Sandi Chanoch in her acrylic painting class that has been meeting on Tuesday afternoons for the past 15 years. Their exhibit is aptly named, “Every Tuesday at 1 o’clock.

Chanoch, whom her students call “Mrs. C,” finds it gratifying working with adults in addition to the classes she has for children. Some of the adult students have been with her for the entire 15 years.

“We work in a relaxed atmosphere, each artist at his or her own pace and style. Over the years they have become an ‘artistic family’ – supportive, caring, friendly and there for each other whether it’s to lend a brush, a new paint color or to listen to a concern and be supportive. As their talents have been refined over the years so have their relationships,” she noted.

Stephanie O’Connor is having her first solo show at The Stable’s gallery this month. The Paramus resident says that Ridgewood, with its strong arts community, is an exciting place to exhibit.

The paintings are in oil, large, bright and full of meaning.

“Since I have such deep ties to my Cuban roots, the suffering the Communist government has forced on the Cuban people inspires me to tell their story,” she said.

On display is “Libertad,” which means “freedom.” Her painting reflects the lack of freedom of speech or thought.

“Para Los Santos” is a painting showing Santeria – a combination of African-derived religion and Catholicism where saints and African gods are worshipped. The painting depicts the sacrifice of a chicken.
