Ridgewood NJ, resident Steve Kim recounts his recent OPRA experience with the Ridgewood Board of Education .

OPRA is used when the requestor wants to gain access to government records and wants to invoke the OPRA statute, which provides a statutory right of access to government records and holds a records custodian to a response deadline.

What does this mean?  The requestor must choose to submit an OPRA request.  Custodians do not decide when requestor must use OPRA and cannot force requestors to submit an OPRA request

Ridgewood NJ, This year Ridgewood, NJ is celebrating its 125th anniversary! To commemorate the occasion, the Village of Ridgewood is holding a series of events to highlight various moments from the past, and to look forward to our future. On this page we will be posting your favorite memories and experiences. Watch this space for announcements, trivia, and stories about the village’s past, present, and future.

The building at 49 Cottage Place, was built in 1894 and remains a symbol of Ridgewood’s beginnings. As a result of a growing population accelerated by nearby railroads, Ridgewood needed a newer and larger schoolhouse. The first vote, overwhelmingly positive, called for a wooden building. Town wives convinced their husbands that wood would be unsafe, and the town found enough money to build the current structure, known today as the Education Center. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

Reader says , “we want to ensure the best for our kids”

cottage_place BOE_theridgewioodblog

“It’s a complicated topic. What makes kids great? Their SATs? Overall IQ? Their attitude towards overcoming adversity? Industriousness? Ethical grounding? A tough one.

Second complication is, what drives how well they do in all these criteria? How do you effectively quantify contribution from individual teachers, overall school program quality, parents, and just plain genetics?

To do this analysis scientifically is too much for any parent. Even a Ridgewood parent!

From a practical stand point, we want to ensure the best for our kids. And the way to do it is, keep pressure on teachers and BOE to keep delivering better results, spend extra on tutors, sports, etc as a parent… and keep property prices high to keep only dedicated (to education) families moving in to the village.”

A Message from the Ridgewood Superintendent of Schools

unnamed

Dr. Daniel Fishbein

“Summer is quickly coming to an end and the opening day of school, September 3, is nearly here.  We have all been working hard to ensure that our buildings and programs are ready for the first day of school.

Most importantly, on the instructional front our teachers and administrators have been busy writing new curriculum and improving existing curriculum at all grade levels. We have revised K-5 level curricula in English Language Arts, Social Studies and Health. At the Middle School level, we have revised our 6-8 Math, and Band and Orchestra programs. Finally, at Ridgewood High School we have revised 22 courses in the areas of Business, World Languages, Math, Fine and Applied Arts, and Wellness. We also have our new staff in place and are providing them with a four-day orientation so they are ready to go when students arrive.

Reader says the BOE got up night after night and assured us all that we were wrong about increased school enrollment

BOE

“Don’t forget Rurik, Jim and company (BOE) who got up night after night and assured us all that we were wrong – – we were volantis – – we were naysayers – – and that he and his wife and other seniors like him would move into these slums and life would be beautiful for us all.

And don’t forget the developers in town who are building these monstrosities and laughing all the way to bank over the ineptitude of the Village.

And don’t forget, while the betrayal started with Arohnson and the Puke, the betrayal continued with the current council when it sold out the Villagers who had used their own resoucres to file a lawsuit and stop these monstrosities, after having run on a platform of saying they would contain these slums from being built.”

Calls to Abolish NJ’s School Development Authority in Wake of Staffing Scandal

Parsippany NJ, Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce (R-26) demanded the Legislature take action on her bill to abolish the School Development Authority (SDA) and place school construction responsibilities under the Department of Treasury, after the state was forced this week to fire 30 SDA employees whose hiring violated state ethics guidelines

A-5330, introduced by the Assemblywoman after the SDA staffing scandal broke in April, will transfer all school construction responsibilities now handled by the troubled agency to the Division of Property Management and Construction in the Department of Treasury. Assemblywoman DeCroce noted that her legislation will provide the Governor and Legislature more direct authority to control school construction activities, while allowing the state Economic Development Authority (EDA) to retain its responsibility for the financing of school construction projects.

Governor Murphy ends school Superintendent Salary Cap

Dan Fishbein 10

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ,  Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation ending the cap on school superintendent salaries in New Jersey. The Democratic governor signed the measure baring the state Department of Education from setting maximum salaries for superintendents and sets guidelines for school executive contracts to limit or standardize bonuses, golden parachutes and other fringe benefits.

Former Republican Gov. Chris Christie had implemented a $175,000 cap on superintendents in 2011, citing what he called high salaries and generous perks in superintendent contracts. The cap was raised to $191,584 in 2017, with incentives to earn more if school chiefs stay in the same district.

So who wants to guess how long it will take for the Ridgewood Board of Education to raise the salary of our schools superintendent?
