THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — Bergen County’s United Way is considering acquisition of the American Red Cross building on Godwin Avenue, having deemed the two-storied structure ideal for a possible affordable-housing project.

Tom Toronto, the president of Bergen County’s United Way, confirmed Friday his organization “is interested” in procuring the Red Cross site in Ridgewood, which recently hit the market following a reorganization of the non-profit’s real estate holdings.

Toronto said village officials approached him a few weeks ago to suggest the building as a potential location for a United Way-funded supportive housing project.

“Our interest would be to convert that building into housing, and there is some appeal to the structure: It lends itself to adaptation for housing relatively easily and efficiently,” Toronto said, mentioning that it’s asking price could be “a hurdle.”

Toronto said Bergen County’s United Way could end up making an offer on the Ridgewood parcel as soon as next week, but as of now “We’re in the process of assessing whether we can make a meaningful offer for the building,” Toronto said.

The Red Cross building needs an elevator, Toronto said, noting the building’s first floor would likely be devoted to living spaces for the physically and developmentally disabled. Other units in the building, Toronto said, could be allocated as senior-citizen residences, depending on the village’s affordable housing needs.

Counterfeit $100 bills make there way into Ridgewood’s Central Business District

August 22,2015

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, for the Second time in as many weeks the Ridgewood police report that on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 the owner of a business in the central business district reported that a customer passed a counterfeit $100 bill at the store.

Earlier in the month on Thursday August 6, 2015 Stop & Shop store security reported a male actor attempted to purchase gift cards valued at $300. utilizing counterfeit $100. bills on August 4 at 11:57 am. When the cashier discovered that the bills were counterfeit the actor fled the store. The actor who was described as a black male in his early to mid 30’s wearing a New York Islanders baseball cap left the area in a silver two door vehicle (unknown New York registration) accompanied by a black female in her late 20’s wearing dark glasses and a kerchief on her head. Both matters are under investigation by the detective bureau.

Recently its been reported that counterfeiters apparently used a technique that involves bleaching legitimate money and altering the bills to look like $100 notes, giving them the feel of real bills . Many businesses use special pens to detect counterfeit currency, however the pens cannot give a definitive confirmation about suspected altered currency, and they are not sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury.

Small business owners need to be aware of the many ways to detect counterfeit money. The Secret Service offers the below methods to detect counterfeit bills:

Hold a bill up to a light and look for a holograph of the face image on the bill. Both images should match. If the $100 bill has been bleached, the hologram will display an image of Abraham Lincoln, who appears on the $5 bills, instead of Benjamin Franklin.
Looking at the bill through a light will also reveal a thin vertical strip containing text that spells out the bill’s denomination.
I’d also like to pass on some tips from the U.S. Treasury:
Color-shifting ink: If you hold the new series bill (except the $5 note) and tilt it back and forth, please observe the numeral in the lower right hand corner as its color shifts from green to black and back.
Watermark: Hold the bill up to a light to view the watermark in an unprinted space to the right of the portrait. The watermark can be seen from both sides of the bill since it is not printed on the bill but is imbedded in the paper.
Security Thread: Hold he bill a light to view the security thread. You will see a thin imbedded strip running from top to bottom on the face of a banknote. In the $10 and $50 the security strip is located to the right of the portrait, and in the $5, $20 and $100, it is located just to the left of the portrait.
Ultraviolet Glow: If the bill is held up to an ultraviolet light, the $5 bill glows blue; the $10 bill glows orange, the $20 bill glows green, the $50 bill glows yellow, and the $100 bill glows red – if they are authentic!
Microprinting: There are minute microprinting on the security threads: the $5 bill has “USA FIVE” written on the thread; the $10 bill has “USA TEN” written on the thread; the $20 bill has “USA TWENTY” written on the thread; the $50 bill has “USA 50” written on the thread; and the $100 bill has the words “USA 100” written on the security thread. Microprinting can be found around the portrait as well as on the security threads.
Fine Line Printing Patterns: Very fine lines have been added behind the portrait and on the reverse side scene to make it harder to reproduce.
Comparison: Compare the feel and texture of the paper with other bills you know are authentic.

If you believe you have received a counterfeit bill, the U.S. Treasury advises you to do the following:

Do not put yourself in danger.
Do not return the bill to the passer.
Delay the passer with some excuse, if possible.
Observe the passer’s description – and their companions’ descriptions – and write down their vehicle license plate numbers if you can.
Contact your local police department or call your local Secret Service office.
Write your initials and date in the white border area of the suspected counterfeit note.
Do not handle the counterfeit note. Place it inside a protective cover, a plastic bag, or envelope to protect it until you place it in the hands of an identified Secret Service Special Agent. You can also mail it to your nearest Secret Service office.

Remember, if you are passed a counterfeit bill, you own it. So when accepting cash, it pays to be knowledgeable about the crime of counterfeiting.

Ridgewood NJ, The Village Council has scheduled public hearings on five (5) ordinances which, if approved, would permit the development and construction of high density multi-family housing in Ridgewood’s Central Business District.

The Ordinance #’s are:  3489, 3490, 3491, 3492, and 3493.  Full text of each ordinance is available via these links:

https://www.njpublicnotices.com/Details.aspx?SID=gjwu1xsp3tkogmnc3awsou0b&ID=15039

These hearings will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 20015 beginning at 8:00 PM.

BUT WHERE WILL THE HEARINGS BE HELD?

If held in the Village Hall Courtroom, there will not be enough room to accommodate the anticipated number of attendees/those wishing to speak.

Will the Council deliberately try to lock some of us out by not holding the hearings at an appropriately sized venue?

Stand by ladies and gentlemen.  Let’s see if our mayor and his cohorts do the right thing.

shop Ridgewood : North Jersey businesses boost social media sophistication

THE RECORD

With more and more potential customers flocking to Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and other social-media options, small businesses stand to benefit from having a more dynamic and engaging online presence.

Small businesses are becoming more sophisticated in their use of social media, picking and choosing what works best for them, while at the same time effectively gauging the return on their investment in social media.

For custom storage company California Closets, which opened a Ridgewood location in July, social media was one way it got the word out about its new storefront.

“Before, [social media] was a fun thing to do,” said Melanie Statlander, 37, marketing manager for the company’s North Jersey outlets. “Now, you really can promote your business.” Statlander directs social media messages now to target specific audiences. To announce the opening of the Ridgewood store, “I boosted a post only within a five-mile radius of Ridgewood,” she said.

The success of Statlander’s social media campaigns is measured by how many users actually come in and buy the company’s product. Recently, a customer said she found the company through Facebook.

“It’s good to reach people [through social media], but you want to reach the right people — your clients,” she said.

California Closets, which has more than 100 showrooms nationwide, has the advantage of a staff that can sustain an engaging social media presence. Though Statlander is responsible for the company’s North Jersey Facebook and Twitter pages — in addition to her other marketing duties, the company’s California-based corporate office has one person working solely on the company’s Instagram and Pinterest pages, which helps promote the company’s overall brand more aggressively and nationally.

For smaller businesses, having one employee committed to social media is not always an option.

The Ridgewood Guild is giving residents an opportunity to take in cultural programs, free of charge, on several evenings throughout the summer.

One such program is Music in the Night, a live music performance hosted by the Guild each Friday.

The event, which takes place primarily outside Guild businesses, features musicians of all sorts, “from soloists to five-piece groups and in between,” according to the organization’s president, Tony Damiano.

The performers also range in age, with 11-year-old Jake Thistle being the youngest thus far, Damiano said. Many students from Ridgewood High School also grace the stage.

The response from downtown retailers and patrons makes it clear: last week’s Summer Sidewalk Sale was a success.

The sale, which took place on Aug. 6 through 8, involved Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce businesses, which set up their wares outside in the sunshine. This helped to draw in customers, as passersby browsed a store’s merchandise without actually entering the storefront.

“People who don’t normally go to your store will pass by, see merchandise out [on the sidewalk], buy stuff and come in and take a look at what you have,” said Victor Idy, owner of Victor’s clothing store. “You make a lot of customers that way. It softens up your store; it makes it more appealing to customers who might not have come in to come in.”

In addition to drawing new customers, the sidewalk sale attracts new visitors to downtown Ridgewood, noted Walter Boyer, co-owner of Bookends.

“I think what it does is it increases foot traffic to our town, which is obviously very important,” he said. “I think a lot of shoppers from neighboring towns come here, so we get a lot of exposure from not just Ridgewood residents, but from other neighboring towns who come to these types of events.”

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

A renaissance of sorts is taking place in downtown Ridgewood, one of many business districts to nearly bottom out during the recession born in the previous decade.

In late 2009, two years after the collapse of the once-robust housing market, The Ridgewood News identified roughly 40 vacant storefronts in the Central Business District (CBD), and a handful of others teetered financially. That was, however, as low as the times would go.

Fortunes began to change as merchants made smarter business decisions and consumer confidence grew.

“It felt like a whole different time back then, but you could sense a turnaround coming,” according to Joan Groome, executive director of the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce.

Just one year after reaching basement numbers, the amount of downtown vacancies was slashed in half. Groome had accompanied the newspaper on a walking tour of the CBD in late summer of 2010 and counted just 20 empty storefronts.

She was back out there with The Ridgewood News last week, cutting through Tuesday morning humidity to evaluate the downtown business climate on the eve of this weekend’s Summer Sidewalk Sale. During the stroll, she remarked on the business district’s recovery and the community-wide effort to improve the CBD.

New signs point Ridgewood shoppers in right direction

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

New signs erected in the Central Business District (CBD) aim to inform pedestrians of the local businesses and restaurants that can be found on side streets of the village’s main drag.

Residents and visitors patronizing downtown Ridgewood can now use one of the four existing way-finding signs along East Ridgewood Avenue to help them identify places not easily visible from the main roadway.

These way-finding signs are currently situated at the corners of Oak Street, Chestnut Street, North Broad Street and, most recently, South Broad Street at East Ridgewood Avenue.

The concept of way-finding signs in the CBD was presented by Chamber of Commerce President Paul Vagianos to the Village Council in February and was given good reviews by members of the governing body.

“I think it makes a lot of sense to highlight the businesses on the side streets,” said Councilman Michael Sedon at that meeting. “I agree with your initial thinking. If you’re walking down the main thoroughfare, those businesses are right there in front of you.”

The purchase of a black with gold trim die-cast metal sign is open to all businesses located on a side street, regardless of chamber membership. Businesses located on East Ridgewood Avenue are not eligible to have a sign on the posts. The project also does not extend beyond the railroad tracks.

Price tag for Bergen County DPW facility grows by a Staggering $5 million

This has “Ridgewood parking garage” written all over it

AUGUST 5, 2015, 9:39 PM    LAST UPDATED: THURSDAY, AUGUST 6, 2015, 7:36 AM
BY JOHN C. ENSSLIN

THE RECORD

The new Bergen County public works maintenance facility in Paramus will cost at least $5 million more to build than originally estimated, County Executive James Tedesco told the freeholders Wednesday.

The project, which had been estimated to cost $16 million, has cost $21 million thus far, Tedesco said.

He also said the project, scheduled to open on Oct. 1, is about seven months behind schedule from it’s originated projected completion date in March.

Related:   Cost of Bergen County Justice Center expected to grow by $1.3M

Tedesco has been saying for months that the facility was “underfunded.” But Wednesday marked the first time he specified how much more money it would cost.

The DPW facility is part of a larger multi-project $147-million bond issue that also includes a new Justice Center and parking deck and another DPW garage in Hackensack. Taken together, the work is the largest public works project in the county’s history.

Tedesco said the Justice Center and parking garage are close to coming in on budget. The five-story parking garage is set to open later this summer and the adjacent six-story Justice Center is about six weeks behind schedule, he said. The Hackensack DPW garage is completed.

The Paramus DPW facility, though, has undergone several changes in the last seven months that have added to the cost of that project, he said. For example, one building at the site was designed as a cold-storage garage, to store vehicles without providing any heat. But to allow for diesel-powered vehicles to be stored there, the county has added electric heating blocks to thaw them out in winter, Tedesco said.

He said the original design also did not call for the concrete in the maintenance garage to be sealed with epoxy. That change has added to the expense and the time required to install it, he said.

DPW Director Raymond Dressler said another change was related to how the current administration, which took over in January, plans to use the building. Dressler said one garage bay is getting a lift capable of raising large trucks, so that the county can offer heavy-equipment maintenance as a shared service to municipalities and fire departments. He said plans call for at least two shifts daily to work out of the building, rather than just one, which required reconfiguring the space.
