Ridgewood Girl Scout hopes crossing flags will save lives
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2014
BY DARIUS AMOS
STAFF WRITER
THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
“Pedestrian visibility, or lack thereof, contributes to more than 60 percent of accidents in crosswalks. When a driver is unable to see obstacles that are in the way, collisions are unavoidable,” said Maas, 17.
Her pitch, delivered at a Ridgewood Council meeting earlier this month, is an inexpensive and relatively uncomplicated remedy to one of the downtown’s biggest headaches. The project, as proposed by Maas, calls for the placement of brightly colored flags at targeted intersections.

Village should say ‘no thanks’ to high-density housing

Village should say ‘no thanks’ to high-density housing
Francis H. Schott
To the editor:
Over the past decade, Ridgewood has made great progress in improving our citizens’ quality of life. Our schools have been enlarged and modernized to make them adequate for our 5,800 students, a number that has steadily grown over the decade. Our recreational space, although still below state and federal standards, has been substantially augmented for the first time in generations by the acquisition and development of Habernickel Park and the purchase of the Schedler property as well as the enlargement of Citizens Park.
Admittedly we are still struggling with parking and traffic problems downtown, but the positives outweigh the negatives of the early 21st Century by a wide margin.

Restaurant review: Memoire in Ridgewood
Friday, January 24, 2014
By ELISA UNG
RESTAURANT REVIEWER
No lie: When I heard that Giocomo Mistretta was in the kitchen of the new Ridgewood restaurant Mémoire, I had to restrain myself from charging in immediately in search of one dish: The salmon that Mistretta served at the former Napa Valley Grille at the Westfield Garden State Plaza set a high bar, one that I was crossing my fingers that Mémoire could match.
It did. Grilled crisp and flaky, Mémoire’s salmon is topped with cranberry ginger honey butter and served over a subtle mix of Israeli couscous and roasted vegetables ($24). It’s like an old friend, and sums up the menu: contemporary American with an eclectic array of influences, but ultimately more familiar than edgy.

North Jersey coffee shops brew new ideas to compete with larger chains
MONDAY, JANUARY 20, 2014 LAST UPDATED: MONDAY JANUARY 20, 2014, 3:15 PM
BY ANDREW WYRICH
STAFF WRITER
THE RECORD
Local coffee shops can’t compete with the big chains on visibility, marketing and brand-name recognition. But what really counts, they say, is what’s in the cup, and that’s where they think they can hold their own.
North Jersey coffee shop owners are spending more time — and money — focusing on getting better coffee beans, and sometimes roasting their own. And they’re also reaching out into their communities, building relationships, name recognition and their own brand of loyalty with their best customers.
It isn’t easy, in a saturated market where the big name retailers like Starbucks, with 47 stores in Bergen and Passaic counties, and Dunkin’ Donuts, with 50, seem to be on every corner. They’re competing for an ever-increasing number of people seeking their daily caffeine fix. The National Coffee Association’s latest survey last September showed that 83 percent of adults in the United States drank coffee in one form or another, up 5 percent from 2012, and one third of consumers drink a “gourmet” coffee each day — or something other than your average blend.
That’s not news to Terry Jung, co-owner of Ridgewood Coffee Co.

Lisa’s Mediterranean Cuisine in Ridgewood
April 23,2013

Lisa’s Turkish Kitchen is a Ridgewood, NJ institution for Middle Eastern, namely Turkish, cuisine. A few months ago, the restaurant moved from its original location on Chestnut Street one block east to 28 Oak Street and changed its name to Lisa’s Mediterranean Cuisine.
I have never been to Lisa’s at its original location, but have heard great things. So recently I decided to pay Lisa’s a visit for a solo lunch. I love Turkish food. It’s delicious and shares similar flavors with other Mediterranean cuisines.

Ridgewood NJ, its official the Village of Ridgewood has gone sushi crazy . By all accounts Ridgewood has approximately 61 restaurants , we count at lest 8 “sushi” restaurants.
Sushi is a Japanese food consisting of cooked vinegared rice (shari) combined with other ingredients (neta), usually raw fish or other seafood.
Neta and forms of sushi presentation vary, but the ingredient which all sushi have in common is vinegared rice called sushi-meshi.Raw meat sliced and served by itself is sashimi.

Downtown Development guidelines the “big picture”
January 13, 2013
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ Looks like the Ridgewood News has brought their A game to Village Central Business District development debate by proposing the planning board consider the big picture ,not only the impact to the CBD but the impact to the whole town , the schools, services ,infrastructure and commuting in their latest Ridgewood News editorial: Developing guidelines ( https://www.northjersey.com/news/opinions/186420401_Ridgewood_News_editorial__Developing_guidelines.html )
According to the News , “Ridgewood officials are considering the potential impact on the village. A draft ordinance is being drawn up that contains specifications each developer must follow, such as floor area ratio, setbacks, sign usage and minimum parking. That’s an important first step, but we believe much more must be considered.
Then the good stuff ,”In addition, the impact on traffic downtown – already a concern for many, especially regarding pedestrian safety – must be an important factor for Ridgewood’s planning board. The draft ordinance will guide officials in decisions such as units per acre and appropriate maximum building height. But we hope Ridgewood officials will consider the “big picture” and the impact of so much potential housing in one small geographic area.( https://www.northjersey.com/news/opinions/186420401_Ridgewood_News_editorial__Developing_guidelines.html )
What is the “big picture”, the “big picture” is the is the overall impact on the community as a whole , the schools, Village services, ,parking, infrastructure, commuting , medical , traffic, EMS , fire, safety and of course the over all viability.of Ridgewood’s downtown .With Urbanization comes added costs to the whole Village as well as quality of life issues that are very hard to put a price tag on .
If the Ridgewood Station project , the Dayton, Chestnut Village and the Enclave it will add over 300 new housing units within five blocks of each other forever changing the Village and the nature of the Village itself.
“Town Garage” looks to make a comeback
September 5, 2012
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, With the Village facing a “”Park-pocalypse” next week the Village council looks to continue discussions during the councils next work session on the recently proposed “Chamber of Commerce” parking plan for the Central Business District and a new plane for the you guessed it “Town Garage” property.
As previously reported members of the Ridgewood business community presented an elaborate, through expensive multifaceted plan last month that included not one but two parking structures and a new retail space as well as a strategy to fund the entire venture. This plan has become known as the “Chamber of Commerce” parking plan.
Criticism has centered on whether the plan can come in on budget to meet the very aggressive requirements to fund the parking complexes without risk to tax payers. A rosie scenario was presented but given the Villages past inability to meet construction budgets ie, the $2 million Village Hall that became a $9 million fiasco or the $400,000 ‘Golden Toilet” at Vets field that much chronicled on this blog leaves readers with doubts .
Tonight the “Town Garage” project is expected to be resurrected by the owners .Village Council members are expected discuss the plan at length. Past plans for the property have always been based on the socialized taxpayer financing with profits kept in the hands of the few. Taxpayers in Ridgewood up till now have been in no mood to finance someone else’s profits., but with the new regime the jury is still out.
There is also the issue of old fuel tanks , and soil contamination at the site if needed with no one really sure what the Village is on the hook for.
