Reader defends , “Dr. Fishbein, has presided over a period during which the corrosive influence of constructivist teaching methods has waned”

unnamed

“Dr. Fishbein, whatever some may say of him, has presided over a period during which the corrosive influence of constructivist teaching methods has waned somewhat and may now be losing its mojo. At the time Dr. Fishbein was hired, a huge push had been underway for years in the Ridgewood district in favor of denuding K-12 curricula of content and emphasizing process instead. As part of that push, the Trustees of our Board of Education put us on the brink of hiring for our superintendent the then-high priest of Constructivism and Reform Math (late of a Long Island district he conveniently abandoned rather than face the unmitigated displeasure of a growing army of pitchfork-bearing parents and taxpayers) together with his “man behind the curtain” wife as a kind of Bill and Hillary “two for one” deal. Like Hillary, who put her husband to shame in terms of her determination to promote the marxist/socialist agenda, the dedication our incoming supe’s wife had to the cause (as demonstrated by her history of hoovering up large amounts constructivism-promoting grant money and writing books on the subject), to say nothing of her radical street cred, probably exceeded that of her husband. We dodged a huge bullet when that zealot thankfully quit a couple of weeks before his scheduled start date and took his egghead wife with him to parts unknown. Within a few months, Superintendent Fishbein was hired. Within a year or so after that, we witnessed with enormous relief the resignation and apparent professional disappearance of long-time Assistant Superintendent in Charge of Curriculum Regina Botsford, whose radicalism and utter devotion to constructivist teaching methods was itself the stuff of legend among her K-12 curriculum development industry colleagues (Bill Ayers eventually went into that line of work, if that tells you anything). So the constructivist storm seems to have passed, at least for the time being, and Ridgewood was not established as the Mecca for constructivist teaching methods among U.S. K-12 public school districts. Your mileage may vary, but we might want to pause and at least thank Dr. Fishbein for what he isn’t!”

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewo0d NJ, Dr. Fishbein began by explaining that the primary concern when developing the reopening plan was the health and safety of our students and staff. Since districts are getting information from the Governor’s office and the Department of Education daily, everything is subject to change, and we need to be prepared to pivot at any time. The presentation, along with a link to a survey, will be embedded in a letter to parents which is being emailed on Tuesday, July 28. Transition to September was presented by Ms. Poelstra, who began by thanking the many stakeholders for their input and contributions to the development of the plan.

Ridgewood Board of Education Still Reviewing Options for Graduation

RHS_ Graduation_theridgewoodblog

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, The governor announced that in-person graduations can happen in July. Specific guidance regarding graduations has not yet been provided. Dr. Fishbein has a county roundtable meeting for superintendents, and graduation ceremonies are an agenda item to be discussed. With social distancing, we still face significant hurdles, having a graduating class of approximately 440 students. Managing crowds is also something that must be evaluated to determine the best way to hold graduation that is both special for the Class of 2020 and safe.  Another concern is in the area of liability, as pandemics are not covered by our insurance policy. All of these factors are being carefully considered.

Reader says ,”Dr. Fishbein’s relationship with LAN has to be more heavily scrutinized”

unnamed

“Dr. Fishbein’s relationship with LAN has to be more heavily scrutinized. The mere fact that only one firm was awarded or sought to submit bids for these projects screams conflict of interest. Our Village resources are both limited and sacred. Formal RFP’s should be sought from numerous accredited firms demonstrating the wherewithal required to both execute and provide warranties for these critical projects, which should then be collectively vetted and selected by the board. Given the magnitude of dollars, and the associated impact on the Village’s fiscal health and on resident tax bills, anything short of a thorough and transparent process is a grossly negligent fulfillment of their fiduciary responsibilities to the residents.

This referendum should be a hard “NO” until these matters are fully vetted and cross checked.”

Dr. Fishbein Comments of the Parkland School shooting

RHS

Dr. Fishbein on the Parkland shooting:

Dear Parents, Guardians and Staff:

Sadly, once again I must write to address another tragic school shooting, this time in Parkland, FL. Although far from Ridgewood, this senseless act hits close to home because it has taken the lives of innocent children and adults and torn the very fiber of a vibrant community.

While every event of this nature is unique and we always hope that it would never happen in our Village, we are realistic in our approach to safety in the Ridgewood Public Schools. Our top priority is to assure the safety of our students and staff. For this reason, we have security protocols in place at each of our buildings that are regularly reviewed for their effectiveness, including locked entries, ID swipe cards and the recent hire of a school safety officer. Our safety plan also includes a strong partnership with the Ridgewood Police Department and other first responders up to the county level and beyond. The importance of these relationships cannot be overemphasized, nor the value of the safety drills that we regularly practice with our students and staff; as seen in the Parkland shooting, these drills are a critical component to maintaining calm order and minimizing harm.

Events like yesterday’s shooting are frightening for everyone, most especially for children. Please do not shy away from discussing this incident with your children while reassuring them that they are safe. Professionals advise the following:

• Don’t project your fears onto your children.
• Limit access to the repetitious news cycle.
• Be honest.
I know that you join me in thoughts and prayers for the Parkland community. I do believe that at this difficult time the victims, their families, the first responders and the entire school district of students and staff would very much appreciate our sincere condolences as they try to cope with this tragedy and find a way to move forward.
Sincerely,
Daniel Fishbein, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

Reader asks Is Dr. Fishbein speaking as we would like him to speak. Is he being transparent? Is he assuaging our concerns?

Dan Fishbein 10

Is Dr. Fishbein speaking as we would like him to speak. Is he being transparent? Is he assuaging our concerns.

Or is the Record, with the article that just came out on what happened: that there was fight and a child is in the hospital with a fractured skull and may lose the sight of one eye, is the Record more transparent than Dr. Fishbein. Is the Record article appropriate.

Should Dr. Fishbein have just stated openly and forthrightly to the public what happened. Would that have been more or less transparent, appropriate.

The children who have not come forward as witnesses and who may have videos of the fight and who may have not intervened during the fight, is that behavior similar to Dr. Fishbein’s not being open about what happened.

Could children be learning violence and cowardice and fear of being open and honest from we adults.
