Ridgewood NJ, Canada’s prime minister has invoked emergency powers in an attempt to shut down a protest by truckers seeking an end to COVID-19 restrictions, but most American voters support the so-called “Freedom Convoy” – and think a similar protest here would be a good idea.

Trenton NJ, State Senator Kristin Corrado expressed concern with the nomination of Matt Platkin to be Attorney General, saying he advised Gov. Murphy to rule through executive order and mandates. On emergency powers, Corrado says we need some who will tell Gov. Murphy to ‘Give It Back.’
Trenton NJ, Senator Edward Durr said a nonsensical executive order issued by Governor Phil Murphy yesterday further demonstrates why the New Jersey Legislature must act to limit the emergency powers of the Executive Branch.
Middletown NJ, Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger (NJLD13-R) has one word for Governor Murphy as he seeks an extension to his emergency powers next week – NO! This preemptive, definitive statement comes as news broke that the New Jersey Governor is officially requesting a 90-day extension to his “limited” Emergency Powers during the January 10th voting session in the State’s Legislature:
Trenton NJ, Senator Anthony M. Bucco said it’s clear that public pressure to end the public health emergency immediately has helped to stall an ill-advised Democratic bill that would have extended Governor Phil Murphy’s emergency powers until next year.
Harrisburg PA, Pennsylvanians on Tuesday voted to strip Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf’s emergency powers that he imposed during the COVID-19 outbreak. The vote approves constitutional amendments proposed by Republican lawmakers angry over Wolf’s handling of the outbreak. Republicans see the vote as an overture to the upcoming governor’s race.
Trenton NJ, Senator Joe Pennacchio said it’s time to force Governor Phil Murphy to be more transparent about his flawed pandemic response by removing emergency powers he has used to block access to public records.
Trenton NJ, In response to months of mandatory shutdown across the state, 10th District Legislators Senator Jim Holzapfel and Assemblymen Greg McGuckin and John Catalano have sponsored a resolution which would prevent the overreaching of the Governor’s executive powers. SCR-117 and ACR-181 proposes a constitutional amendment to limit effective period of certain emergency orders, rules, or regulations issued by Governor to 14 days.
Trenton NJ, Senator Declan O’Scanlon issued the following statement on the need to curtail Governor Phil Murphy’s emergency powers:
“Today, I signed onto a resolution that just strike me as peculiar. Peculiar in the sense that I never would have imagined the need for this to exist in a democracy. SCR-117 is intended to curtail the Governor’s power to issue emergency executive orders without reapproval by the legislature every 15 days. It’s a proposed constitutional amendment that if passed, would create a ballot question potentially altering our State’s constitution and let the public decide whether a Governor needs to have their power more frequently checked by the Legislature.
TRENTON NJ, Assemblyman Ron Dancer is supporting his Republican colleague Brian Bergen’s legislation to put a layer of checks and balances on the governor’s ability to enact emergency executive orders.
“The governor’s ability to unilaterally impose restrictions on the freedoms of our citizens cannot go unchecked,” said Bergen (R-Morris). “One person with near absolute power is dangerous. Governor Murphy doesn’t even have a problem admitting that he doesn’t consider the Bill of Rights. My legislation will ensure that the governor has the ability to take emergency action, but that action must be reviewed and approved by the legislature within 14 days or it will expire.”
