Reader asks What portion of the garage’s cost do these CBD eateries plan to contribute towards it’s construction?

itsgreektome2_theridgewoodblog

What portion of the garage’s cost do these CBD eateries plan to contribute towards it’s construction? If they, and other property owners in the CBD think they actually need a garage, offer to pay something towards the cost. Like Health Barn who expects to be given everything she wants from the town of Ridgewood at no cost to her–and doesn’t even live in the town to pay some of her taxes towards it. Many of our CBD owners are also not residents. For both groups, “It’s no skin off their noses” if the garage fails. They are just due one as they so graciously have opened their business here and certainly must deserve a reward for being so good to our residents.

Piller’s Fine Foods Recalls Ready-To-Eat Salami and Speck Products due to Possible Salmonella Adulteration

BlackKassel salmi recall

Class I Recall 129-2017
Health Risk: High Dec 16, 2017

Washington DC, Piller’s Fine Foods, a Waterloo, Canada establishment, is recalling approximately 1,076 pounds of ready-to-eat salami and speck products that may be adulterated with Salmonella, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The ready-to-eat speck prosciutto and salami items were produced on Sept. 22 and Oct. 12, 2017, respectively. The following products are subject to recall: [View Labels (PDF only)]

Vacuum-sealed random weight plastic packages containing “Black Kassel Piller’s Dry Aged D’Amour Salami” with Best Before date of May 12, 2018
Vacuum-sealed random weight plastic packages containing “Black Kassel Piller’s Dry Aged Speck Smoked Prosciutto” with Best Before date of May 12, 2018.

These items were produced in Canada and were shipped to distribution centers in California, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey and New York.

The problem was discovered when an FSIS sample of the ready-to-eat salami product was confirmed positive for Salmonella. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their health care provider.

FSIS and the company are concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

FSIS advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen. The only way to confirm that meat and poultry products are cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature, https://1.usa.gov/1cDxcDQ.

Media and consumers with questions regarding the recall can contact Trent Hilpert, President, Piller’s Fine Foods, at (519) 743-1412 ext. 240.

Poor diet is a factor in one in five deaths, global disease study reveals

fastfood

Study compiling data from every country finds people are living longer but millions are eating wrong foods for their health

Poor diet is a factor in one in five deaths around the world, according to the most comprehensive study ever carried out on the subject.

Millions of people are eating the wrong sorts of food for good health. Eating a diet that is low in whole grains, fruit, nuts and seeds and fish oils and high in salt raises the risk of an early death, according to the huge and ongoing study Global Burden of Disease.

The study, based at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, compiles data from every country in the world and makes informed estimates where there are gaps. Five papers on life expectancy and the causes and risk factors of death and ill health have been published by the Lancet medical journal.

It finds that people are living longer. Life expectancy in 2016 worldwide was 75.3 years for women and 69.8 for men. Japan has the highest life expectancy at 84 years and the Central African Republic has the lowest at just over 50. In the UK, life expectancy for a man born in 2016 is 79, and for a woman 82.9.

Diet is the second highest risk factor for early death after smoking. Other high risks are high blood glucose which can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, high body mass index (BMI) which is a measure of obesity, and high total cholesterol. All of these can be related to eating the wrong foods, although there are also other causes.

Jersey Mike’s Subs Partners with Food Banks to Help Texas Residents Impacted by Hurricane

Jersey Mikes Ridgewood

September 3,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, More than 1,300 Jersey Mike’s Subs locations across the country including Ridgewood are partnering with the Houston Food Bank and Corpus Christi Food Bank to help Texas residents impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

This two-part program provides needed donations to the two local food banks:

From Monday, Sept. 11, through Sunday, Sept. 17, participating Jersey Mike’s locations will donate $1 for every regular sized #7 Turkey Breast and Provolone sub sold.
Through a grassroots program in September, Jersey Mike’s will hand out special cards in local communities nationwide offering a free sub for a $2 donation to the food banks. Cards can be redeemed in participating restaurants from Friday, Sept. 15, through Friday, Dec. 1.

“We want to let people know about the fundraiser so they can come together and join us in this national effort to help all those affected by the devastation in the Greater Houston and Corpus Christi areas,” said Peter Cancro, founder and CEO, Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems. “We are grateful to our local owners, managers, and crews who dropped everything to make sub sandwiches for thousands of people in need as well as for fire departments, EMS and other first responders.”

John Enterline, Houston area director, Jersey Mike’s, who is heading up local efforts, said, “Our focus at the local level is on feeding as many people as possible who are in need and in shelters, as well as providing sustenance to first responders so they can continue their life saving work. We appreciate the support from our customers across the country as well as from the Jersey Mike’s system as we start to rebuild as a community.”

All franchisees and team members are safe, and all locations are now open, according to Enterline.

Jersey Mike’s is a fixture in Texas neighborhoods, with 16 locations in the Houston area and two in Corpus Christi. The company expects to raise at least half a million dollars for the food banks.

“There are a lot of people down here in Texas who have lost homes and livelihoods,” said Dalton Stewart, a Jersey Mike’s area director in Dallas, who brought down a team to help colleagues make subs in Houston. “It doesn’t surprise me that the Jersey Mike’s family would step up in these difficult times to make a difference.”

Stewart added that Jersey Mike’s locations in the Dallas/Fort Worth area are feeding evacuees at local shelters as well as at the Red Cross Command Center there.
