Kings Food Market has been a New Jersey staple since it opened in 1936

Kings Food Market

January 12,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, What do Eleanor Roosevelt, Bernard Gimbel, Chef Julia Child and Chef Emeril Lagasse all have in common? Kings Food Markets!

Kings Food Market has been a New Jersey staple since it opened in 1936. In fact, did you know the first Kings was located in Summit, NJ right next to the train station so customers could conveniently grocery shop? This strategy was wildly successful that as Kings continued to grow, it would build all its locations with close proximity to train stations throughout the state.
As the end of Kings’ 80th anniversary year comes to a close, we’d like to reflect on our past 80 years with you, and look ahead to being your specialty and gourmet market for years to come. We included links to popular recipes pertaining to the below decades to inspire your reader’s cooking creativity:
· 1940s – By combining a flare for thriftiness and creativeness, the 1940s home cook continued
to make the most of their food habits by crafting more meals without the use of meat, eggs or sugar like Braised Cauliflower with Spicy Tomato Sauce.
o Kings opened in Summit in 1936 and continued opening stores through the New Jersey commuter train line. Kings was the first market to introduce air conditioning and automatic doors.

· 1950s – As American pantries began to overflow in a post-war 1950s, new convenient foods were introduced into the kitchen in the form of pre-packaged goods, like condensed soup and Deviled Eggs.
o Kings was named Brand Name Retailer of The Year, award presented by Bernard Gimbel and Eleanor Roosevelt.

· 1980s – The term “Tex-Mex” was introduced in 1980s. Americans loved these flavors so much that they named the American Southwest Pesto, the quiche of the 80s. One-Pot Mexican Quinoa became all the rage.
o Kings was also one of the first to start its own cooking schools, which is located in our Short Hills location, featured renowned chefs as Julia Child & Emeril Lagasse.

· 2000s – The culinary lexicon expands to include “EVOO” and “locavore” thanks to an increased awareness of what chefs are cooking. Smoothies also grow in popularity like this Going Green Smoothie.
o Kings Community Outreach remains the cornerstone of the Kings philosophy donating over 20 tons since 1970 of food to those in need.

Fish Urban Dining shut down of its Asbury Park location still a Mystery

Fish
December 13,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood

Ridgewood NJ, it was reported on News 12 that Fish Urban Dining abruptly shut down its Asbury Park location closed in early October.

Fish opened in Asbury Park in 2010 and followed with great fanfare a second location in the summer of 2015 in the Village of Ridgewood in the Citizens bank or Bank of America building depending on how old you are. Both locations are owned by the DeGilio’s City by the Sea Hospitality Group. DeGilio’s City also closed Cibo e Vino in Asbury Park in October as well.

Both restaurants were considered “popular ” and seemed to close abruptly leaving the shut down as a mystery.

Ridgewood NJ, Santoni’s Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant in Garfield was founded in 1988 by Ed Lewer and Joe Parillo. Both coming from a vast variety of restaurant experience they set out to create mouthwatering food using only freshest ingredients and the highest quality products. Santoni’s Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant was an instant hit and over the years has become a staple in the town of Garfield. Ed and Joe believed in not only providing a great product as a key to their success but staying involved in the community. For decades they have been highly involved in the community. Santoni’s has sponsorship many fundraising events, nonprofit organizations, and various town sports teams. This community involvement led the business to win Business of the Year in 1994.

Santoni’s Pizzeria has always been a family run and operated business. Joe and Ed’s sons worked in the pizzeria since they young kids and are continuing their father’s principles and philosophy.  In 2013, Santoni’s opened its second location in Ridgewood, NJ with the same idea and principles in mind. Since the grand opening Santoni’s has been an instant success in town and has won several awards for best pizza in Ridgewood voted in a blind tasting by the Ridgewood High School pizza club.

Much more than just another pizza joint, Santoni’s embodies what your favorite neighborhood pizzeria should be– A warm, welcoming place where you can have a delicious meal with your friends and family. We pride ourselves on making the only best quality food while using only the freshest ingredients. Santoni’s aims to be your favorite neighborhood pizzeria and restaurant.

Everyone should order pizza from Santonis Pizzeria and Restaurant at 88 Godwin Avenue. This guy has really gotten the shaft from the NIMBY’s in his neighborhood; his business has been unjustly and unfairly affected by the privatization of precious Pomander Walk. His food is delicious, and he is a really nice guy who is just trying to run his business.   Call 201-389-6810  Show him that the rest of Ridgewood is filled with nice people who appreciate good food and hard-working shop owners. https://www.santonispizza.com/menus/ridgewood-menu/

Diners returning to restaurants after election, restaurateur Danny Meyer says

Berkeley Lovelace Jr. | @Blovelace_Jr

Meyer: Political uncertainty impacted interest in going out to eat  18 Hours Ago | 05:35

People are coming back to restaurants in “droves,” after a temporary decline in going out to eat ahead of the election, restaurateur Danny Meyer said.

He explained that “restaurants are places that people come to be with people and people didn’t feel great with all the uncertainty” around the election. Meyer said that what happened in restaurants mirrored the uncertainty in the financial markets.

“I think people are coming back in droves. Even if they’re coming back to debate, there’s nothing like sitting around a table with some good food with friends and that seems to really be bringing people out and we couldn’t be happier,” he said on CNBC’s “Power Lunch” on Monday.

The Shake Shack founder made his remarks after activity in the service sector hit a one-year high in November. Food service businesses such as McDonald’s, Darden and Chipotle saw their stocks climb in afternoon trade Monday.

Bring along the kids and explain why we do the things we do and that some people are more concerned with their next meal, not how strong the WiFi is in their bedroom. 🙂 There are certainly things to give thanks for.

10 Ways to Avoid Picky Eater Syndrome

Bloomberg-eating

Annie Holmquist | April 29, 2016

For many parents, the most traumatic family battles are fought at the very place which should be a place of harmony and connection: the dinner table.

The bad news is that those dinnertime battles are often the result of food habits that parents have unconsciously established.

The good news, however, is that those habits can be reversed.

In her book French Kids Eat Everything, Karen Le Billon lays out 10 food practices her family discovered while living in France. The results were life-changing, and now Le Billon’s children are fans of everything from beets to mackerel. The 10 food rules are summarized below:
