Ridgewood NJ, Freeholder candidate John Mitchell visited Ridgewood Train Station this morning  after attending the GOP Candidates night in Hasbrouck Heights pushing a Tax Reduction and Strict Budgeting strategy .

It was a “Win-Win” at the Ridgewood train station this morning…

…It was a “win” that I was able to help a commuter understand the intricacies of the unfair school funding formula and how it impacts his ever rising property taxes. And it was also a “win” that I had a chance to meet hundreds of residents in this beautiful town.

John Mitchell , “There are 70 towns in Bergen County and it continues to amaze me how diverse we are but at the same time united in what we want for our children and grandchildren. A good education, the opportunity to work, lower property taxes and a safe environment are what I heard consistently during my recent travels”

THE RECORD

A communications mix-up Monday led the Bergen County Freeholders to postpone action on a proposed $3-million bond issue to renovate a building at Bergen Community College.

Three freeholders who serve on the Board of School Estimate were about to discuss the measure when County Administrator Dominic Novelli said he had not seen the proposal.

There was also concern over whether adequate notice was given for the vote, which several freeholders said took them by surprise as well.

“The conclusion that we came to is that the meeting was not properly noticed,” Freeholder David Ganz said after the Board of School Estimate voted to adjourn until an unspecified date.

“You don’t want — with the dollars amounts what they are — to make a mistake,” he added.

College officials had sought approval for $3 million for renovating Ender Hall on the Paramus campus.

They also sought $1.5 million toward upgrade of information technology equipment.

College President B. Kaye Walter explained that Ender Hall started out as a temporary building many years ago.

She said there are plans to use the building for a number of new initiatives, including a pre-college program for high school students studying engineering.

At first, freeholders sought to accommodate the request, which came during a budget hearing for the college.

Ganz and Freeholder Joan Voss convened a meeting of the board of estimate, which normally includes three freeholders and two college trustees.

They even temporarily swore in Freeholder Tracy Zur to fill in for Freeholder Steve Tanelli, who was not present.

But they quickly recessed the meeting after Novelli pointed out that the administration had not approved the spending.

“Quite frankly, I’m not familiar with this request for additional funding,” he said.

The Bergen County freeholders took what was called a “historic” final step Wednesday toward creating one unified county law-enforcement agency by combining the County Police into the Sheriff’s Office.

By identical 6-to-1 votes, the freeholders gave final approval to two ordinances that will place the 98-year-old County Police Department’s 95 officers under the command of Sheriff Michael Saudino.

Freeholder Maura DeNicola, who has questioned the estimated savings of the consolidation plan, cast the lone dissenting votes.

DeNicola said she realized the plan was moving ahead and she wanted it to happen as efficiently as possible.

“But I’ve always felt that this takes us in the wrong direction in Bergen County in terms of trying to save money and make policing more efficient,” DeNicola said.

THE RECORD

Four Republicans have declared an interest in running for three seats on the Bergen County Freeholder Board — and potential majority control of the board — this year.

Former Freeholder John Mitchell of Cliffside Park and Ramsey Councilman Ken Tyburczy are unopposed for Republican party line endorsements in the June primaries for the two three-year terms up for election.

They will take aim at seats now held by Democrats Tracy Zur of Franklin Lakes and Steve Tanelli of North Arlington, who are running for reelection.

Also, Dierdre Paul of Englewood and Daisy Ortiz-Berger of River Edge are vying for the party line in hopes of serving out the one year left in the term of James Tedesco, a Democrat, who left the board to become county executive.

Democrats currently hold a 5-2 majority on the board.

The Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders voted Wednesday to fund a parking feasibility study in Ridgewood.

The resolution, passed unanimously by the seven-member board, specifically calls for the transfer of $179,160.92 from a 2002 rail network capital bond to the Bergen County Improvement Authority (BCIA), which will lead the study.

“I’m grateful to the Freeholder board and I’m encouraged that we have their full support,” said Mayor Paul Arohnson on Thursday. “That’s important. It’s great that we’re all on the same page.”

The dollar amount is what’s left of a $500,000 bond that was issued by the county in 2002 “for the engineering and design for the creation of a multi-county regional rail network,” which went to upgrades of train stations in several different towns.

In the resolution, the money is not specifically allocated to Ridgewood and can be used toward any municipality, said BCIA executive director Rob Garrison. He estimates that the study in Ridgewood will likely cost $100,000.

Bergen County Exec’s race: Attempt to add two freeholders to county police merger lawsuits fans family ties flames

HACKENSACK – The ongoing legal battle related to the proposed merger of the Bergen County Police Department and the county’s Sheriff’s Office took another twist last week when County Executive Kathleen Donovan, the Republican incumbent seeking re-election in November, attempted to add an ethics complaint against two Democratic freeholders into the police merger lawsuit.

Donovan has struggled with the freeholder board over plans to merge the Bergen County Police Department and the county Sheriff’s Office. Donovan is opposed to the plan, while the majority of the freeholder board, now controlled by the Democrats by a 5-2 veto-proof margin, supports the move. The final decision depends on the outcome of ongoing legal battles related to the merger proposal.

As part of this wider struggle, Donovan has called on two Democratic freeholders, Steve Tanelli and David Ganz, whose son and daughter respectively are employed by the Sherriff”s Office, to recuse themselves from law enforcement issues.

Tanelli, whose son Dan is an investigator with the crime scene unit, and Ganz, whose daughter Pam works a a clerk for the sheriff, declined to do so. (Bonamo/PolitickerNJ)
