Oradell NJ,The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Bergen County SPCA are requesting information from the public regarding a wounded Akita-mix dog that was left at Oradell Animal Hospital on November 3, 2017 and subsequently euthanized due to its injuries.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017, the Bergen County SPCA and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office received information that a two-year-old Akita-mix dog was left at Oradell Animal Hospital by two men who travelled in a black Lincoln Navigator with New York license plates. The dog appeared neglected and had suffered injuries, which included a swollen hind leg, suggesting it had been trapped or otherwise tethered. The men provided differing accounts, one claiming they found the dog in the woods in Mahwah and another that it was found at a construction site in Bergen or Rockland County. The two men then left without entering the animal hospital or providing identification. It is unclear if the two men are good Samaritans.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is encouraged to contact the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Animal Cruelty Task Force at 201-226-5632, or the Bergen County SPCA at 201-573-8900.

ORADELL — Police are investigating a bank robbery on Kinderkamack Road Tuesday morning where about $8,300 was stolen.

The Oradell robbery was the latest in a string of recent crimes at  locations in Bergen County.

The man walked into the bank around 10:10 a.m., placed a black bag on the counter and told a teller to fill it up with cash, Capt. William Wicker said.

The man said he had a weapon, but did not say what it was or show it, Wicker said. Surveillance footage showed that he did not appear to have a weapon, Wicker said. The suspect fled on foot.

The man is described as black, 5’8” and 175 pounds and about 30 years old. He was wearing a black knitted hat, a gray sweatshirt, a gold scarf and khaki pants, Wicker said.

Authorities are investigating if Tuesday’s crime was related to bank robberies at Hudson City branches across the county in recent months. On Dec. 3, a man walked into a Lyndhurst branch in the Lewandowski Commons shopping center and told a teller to fill up a bag he’d brought with money.

Artist Ellsworth Kelly found his bold vision as a boy in Oradell

he power of observation that informed the work of Ellsworth Kelly — whose innovative use of bold, geographic shapes and vivid colors established him as one of America’s leading abstract artists — was incubated in the rural Oradell of long ago.

Kelly, who died Sunday at 92, spent his boyhood in the Bergen County borough and enjoyed bird-watching at the Oradell Reservoir, an experience that helped him focus on nature’s shapes and kindled a passion for color and form.

Oradell, too, gave Kelly his professional moorings: His drawings — of daffodils, for instance, and George Washington and Abraham Lincoln set in profile against a Stars and Stripes backdrop — graced the covers of The Chirp, Oradell Junior High School’s quarterly literary magazine. Kelly himself credited a sixth-grade art teacher, Dorothy Opsut, with recognizing and encouraging his talent.

The artist, who counted Picasso and Matisse as influences, moved to upstate Spencertown, N.Y., after stints in lower Manhattan and Paris, but never forgot Oradell. A childhood friend, Frank Vierling, was the longtime borough historian, and when the Oradell Public Library embarked on a capital campaign to fund a renovation a decade ago, Kelly’s $50,000 was the largest gift.

When the library marked its centennial in 2013, Kelly, days shy of 90, was front and center at the celebration. Telling the crowd that “my art is simply about shapes and colors and what people make of them,” he presented the library with a signed print titled “Color Squares 2” (2011) — squares of green, blue, violet, red and orange on a horizontal white background. It hangs over the fireplace in the North Reading Room, and joins a trove of Kelly books and catalogs in the library’s collection.

In Oradell, fate of historic Blauvelt Mansion faces further discussion

ORADELL — Supporters of the historic Blauvelt Mansion breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday night after Mayor Joseph Murray, Jr. announced that the property’s owner, CareOne, would not apply for a demolition permit before the end of the year.

“Mayor-elect [Dianne] Didio and I met with people from CareOne yesterday and they have agreed to continue dialogue with Mayor Didio to find a mutually satisfactory resolution and hopefully to preserve the mansion,” he said. “That conversation will probably commence in January.”

Murray’s statement at least temporarily quelled widespread fears that CareOne, one of the state’s largest nursing home operators, was planning to demolish the 1890s-era structure. Built in the Shingle Style by the architect Fred Wesley Wentworth, who would become most famous for his role in reconstructing Paterson after fire destroyed large portions of the city in 1902, the great house sits like a castle at the top of a sprawling lawn bordering Kinderkamack Road and has become a beloved landmark for many Bergen County residents.

Protest follows talk of demolishing Oradell mansion

ORADELL — A former owner of the Atwood-Blauvelt Mansion said Thursday that the property’s current owner has signaled that it intends to file for a permit to demolish the historic structure.

Jeffrey Wells, who owned the home until 2011, said that representatives of CareOne, one of the state’s largest nursing home operators, informed him this week that “they were looking to do a walk-through on the house because they were going to apply for a demo permit.” Supporters of efforts to preserve the mansion, which was built in the 1890s, responded by staging a small demonstration there on Thursday.

But Timothy Hodges, CareOne’s chief strategy officer, said Thursday that the fate of the building has not yet been decided.

“Ever since CareOne acquired the property at 699 Kinderkamack Road in Oradell, it has continued to explore its development options for the property,” he said. “That process is still ongoing and no final decisions have been made.”

He added: “CareOne has not applied for a demolition permit from the Borough of Oradell.”

Borough Administrator Laura Graham confirmed that no such application had been filed as of Thursday afternoon.

Wells said the purpose for the walk-through would be to show CareOne’s construction professionals how the building receives utility services. The tour was scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, he said.

But when those professionals saw about a dozen people displaying a banner reading “SAVE the BLAUVELT” on the property’s front lawn, they canceled the appointment, Wells said.

Freeholder Candidate John Mitchell Campaigns at Oradell Train Station

Oradell NJ, Freeholder Candidate John Mitchell made a campaign stop at  Oradell Train Station and answered the $64,000 question, what is a Freeholder?…

…That was the operative question of the morning at the Oradell train station. When I explained that the The Board of Chosen Freeholders acts as the legislature for Bergen County and controls what county government can spend, things became a bit clearer…and certainly the commuters were happy to hear that my running mates and I have specific plans on how to reel in the ever burdensome property taxes hoisted on the backs of our hard working citizens.

…The Oradell train station also accommodates surrounding towns including the great town of New Milford. I was joined by New Milford Council Candidate Matt Seymour along with Oradell Council President Donna Alonso. Our tag teaming of commuters from the various towns was very productive indeed.

More work needed to shore up Oradell Reservoir bridge

THE RECORD

A small bridge over the Oradell Reservoir used by trains hauling millions of gallons of crude oil has deteriorated to the point that the rail company will soon replace the 86-year-old span’s entire deck, according to a federal government inspection report.

While federal officials have said the bridge is structurally sound, the report by the Federal Railroad Administration indicates the bridge is in worse condition than its owner, CSX Corp., acknowledged shortly after it was inspected in March.

The 25-foot bridge crosses the northeast corner of the reservoir, which supplies drinking water to 800,000 people. As many as 30 trains — each carrying up to 3 million gallons of volatile Bakken crude — cross the bridge each week along the CSX River Line on the way to refineries on the East Coast, prompting concerns from local officials, firefighters and water company executives.

The bridge was inspected by the Federal Railroad Administration on March 31, just a few days after The Record reported that government officials had no current reports on the bridge’s condition.

At that time, government officials said the bridge passed inspection and CSX executives said some railroad ties would be replaced “as a matter of routine maintenance.”

But the one-page inspection report — released to the newspaper this week, almost two months after it was requested under the federal Freedom of Information Act – reveals the bridge required serious attention. It states that the bridge deck showed enough deterioration that CSX had already determined to replace it. CSX also ordered trains to reduce speed from 40 mph to 25 mph on the span to “protect the railroad as well as the public for safe passage of trains,” according to the inspection report.

The Federal Railroad Administration employee who inspected the bridge declined to comment.

Defending Myself Against “Anonymous” Posters

Though I am quite amused at the person screaming at me anonymously through an online message board, I do feel the need to defend my comments which have been taken out of context – shocking!

Here is exactly what I posted:Just a heads up I have spoken to Oradell, as well as two AnimalHospitals in NYC near my office, and neither is recommending this shot.Additionally, the fee is $20, plus a $40 visit fee, both x 2, so the total cost is $120 for the vaccine. Not telling anyone which decision tomake, just helping provide some additional facts.

Nowhere am I “knocking” Ridgewood Animal Hospital or Dr. Cerf, who has seen our dog since we moved here and from what I can tell, does an excellent job. I am also quite happy for you that Dr. Cerf was able tosave your dog, as we had a difficult and expensive experience with our pup at 6 months old having developed a liver shunt and needing surgery, luckily for us he was saved by the great team at the NYC Animal Medical Center.

I did call Oradell after receiving the letter from RVH because I wanted to see if they charged less than Ridgewood for the shot, as my initial inclination was to absolutely vaccinate our dog. Oradell did inform mewhen I called that they were not recommending the shot across the board, and I will concede that perhaps in my above post, I could have been abit more specific. Additionally, I also contacted two vets near my office in NYC, who also stated they were not recommending the vaccine. My post was providing as accurate information as I had at the time. The mere suggestion that I would have some sort of agenda and thus put the beloved pets of my neighbors at risk is insulting.

If you were so curious as to where I work (as if I am some rogue internet poster who owns stock in Oradell Animal Hospital) you should note that unlike you, I do not post anonymous comments, though, for your piece of mind, I can assure you, that the utility company I work for has no vested interest in hurting RVH.

Sincerely,
John B.
