Reader asks Why do we the taxpayers of Ridgewood have to pay for an even better library when more than 50% of the patrons are from other towns?

Ridgewood_Public_library_theridgewoodblog

I am at the library weekly, I love reading real hold in my hands books. The library is a great place to learn, to meet, to expose oneself to new ideas. However, I would like to see a study done about who is actually using the Ridgewood library. I rarely see my neighbors or friends there. Instead I see tutors, I see NY license plates, I see cars with parking stickers from towns in southern bergen county. You see, we have the nicest library in bergen county, we have the only library in bergen county that is open on Sundays in the summer! Why oh Why do we the taxpayers of Ridgewood have to pay for an even better library when more than 50% of the patrons are from other towns? Other than bragging rights or simply because “it’s ridgewood”, there is no reason for the taxpayers of Ridgewood to foot the bill so that the rest of BCCLS can benefit.

Ridgewood Library closed for Mother’s and Father’s Days

Bike_Ridgewood_Public_Library_theridgewoodblog

May 14,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Why does the Ridgewood Library have to close on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day? The BCCLS site doesn’t even list those days as library holidays, and they certainly are not. On the Ridgewood Library’s own website, it says May 14th/Sunday/MOTHER’S DAY and June 18th/Sunday/FATHER’S DAY (Maroons Soccer Tournament).” (Actually, it says “Maroon’s”–sadly illiterate for a library. There is only one Maroon?)

What’s the connection–the library has to close because it is ceding the entire parking lot to attendees at a sports event? Does everybody in town care about sports AT ALL? I assure you, they do not.

Here’s the link. It says 2016, but the listings on the page are correct for this year. Somebody failed to update the URL.

URBAN FORESTRY EXPERT PRESENTS – SUSTAINABLE STREET TREE MGMT – MAY 9

April 27,2017

te staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, a New Jersey Urban Forestry Expert will Present ‘Sustainable Street Tree Management’ at Ridgewood Library.

Taking comfort under the shade of an oak tree is one of summer’s greatest pleasures. But, have you wondered how these mighty trees are maintained, or how the village ensures a healthy and diversified tree canopy will comfort residents for years to come?

The Ridgewood Shade Tree Commission will welcome New Jersey Certified Tree Expert Nick Polanin to address these very questions on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at 7:30 pm at the Ridgewood Public Library.

Sustainable Tree Management

Mr. Polanin will discuss sustainable street tree management, the problems facing our urban trees, the challenges and even liabilities involved with the selection of our street trees, as well as issues with care and maintenance, including pest management intervention.

Robust and Healthy Tree Ecosystem

“We are so excited to have Nick Polanin speak at the Ridgewood Library,” said Monica Buesser, Chairperson of the Ridgewood Shade Tree Commission. “Village residents will have the unique opportunity to learn the complexities and importance of maintaining a robust and healthy tree ecosystem in our community.”

This lecture is free and open to the public. Continuing education credit is also available for attendees.

The Ridgewood Public Library is located at 125 N. Maple Avenue, Ridgewood, New Jersey.

For more information, contact Monica Buesser, [email protected].

Having over 30 years of experience in the municipal, residential, and academic sectors of arboriculture and urban forestry, Nick has taught countless professionals and volunteers on many aspects within urban forestry. He has been nationally recognized for his leadership and educational initiatives in training arborists and other tree care professionals on the selection and care of trees and pest intervention, as well as sustainable street tree management. He currently serves as statewide coordinator for the Rutgers NJAES Master Gardener Program. Nick holds an M.S. in Horticulture/Urban Forestry (1989), and a B.S. in Natural Resource Management/Forestry (1982), both from Rutgers University.

Protect, Preserve and Enhance Shade Trees

The Ridgewood Shade Tree Commission’s (STC) purpose is to protect, preserve and enhance the shade trees in the village. Shade Trees are defined as trees planted next to streets on the Village’s property. The STC’s goals are to foster public-private partnerships to 1) educate the community about the contribution shade trees make to the Village environment and, 2) increase the number of shade trees in the village by actively promoting community tree planting programs.

How I Tricked Myself Into Reading More Books

Bolger_theridgewoodpublic_library_theridgewoodblog

cold weather ,time to pick up a good book

Patrick Allan
2/27/17 8:00am

I love books. I can’t leave a bookstore without at least one. But I also have a tendency to buy books and not actually read them. Somewhere along the way reading fell by the wayside in favor of other forms of entertainment. To get back on track, I made some simple changes that have helped me with my reading habits thus far—no speed reading necessary.

I Made My Environment More Reading Friendly

I Carry My Books With Me Wherever I Go

I Give Up on Books I’m Not Enjoying

I Started Reading Three—and Only Three—Books at a Time

I Talk About Books More With Others

I “Complete the Cycle” When Reading

Reader says please don’t cut the book shelf space. Most important part of the Ridgewood library!!

Bike_Ridgewood_Public_Library_theridgewoodblog

I saw Green’s presentation. Boy do I ever feel relieved. I am a senior citizen and Nancy said it was too confusing and difficult for people to find the stairs to go to second floor from the first floor and that it is too “dim” to read upstairs , so they need to redesign the first floor to put the staircase to the second floor right in your face when you walk into the library. And they need natural sunlight from a newly designed roof.

I thought I was getting Alzheimer’s disease and going blind. because I always get lost when I am trying to find the stairway and it is too dark for me to read.

The auditorium with tiered seats will seat about 250 she said. Now it seats about 150. Justin Timberlake still won’t come and perform.

Relax Nancy. Buy some new furniture if you have too, update the lighting fixtures if you have to, but they’re fine for me and really, Nanc, that auditorium has featured some top-notch talent, especially in classical music. It has a great stage and grand piano and the viewing from the floor is fine. And great acoustics. So be happy, I am.

From a long-time Ridgewood resident and library user.

Oh! please don’t cut the book shelf space. Most important part of the library!!

Special Interest Groups are Still Plotting in Ridgewood

village-hall-theridgewoodblog

The Voigt matter is not to be left alone or forgotten. His integrity and character are shot. His attacks and lies are escalating to new heights. This level of deceit is intentional malice. BOE also needs to be addressed. The public needs to get out from behind their computers and stand up against all of it. We are losing battles because the mass majority sits around doing nothing while the BOE/Voigt remain active and launch campaigns to get what they want.

…the Council and the citizens should be made aware of plans before they are finalized. Maybe having someone look over the Library Board’s shoulders might not be such a bad idea. This should not be like our garage Taj Mahal where tons of money was spent before any general consensus occurred. Jeff might have accidentally let the “Cat out of the bag”, but that might prove very advantageous in the long run.

Here we go again. I can just picture the scenario in my mind – Nancy Greene standing before the Village Council and asking that funds be approved for this project, otherwise the monies spent on the planning and design phase will be wasted. Didn’t we hear the same arguments from Roberta Sonenfeld about the proposed Hudson Street parking deck (GARAGE)?
