Ridgewood resident John Katzianer will receive the Volunteer of the Year award from Project Literacy of Greater Bergen County at a presentation scheduled for Sept. 17.

“It feels great,” Katzianer said about being chosen for the award, adding that working for the organization is “absolutely rewarding.”

Project Literacy, which teaches adults valuable learning skills, is run by volunteer tutors. Each year, awards are given to those who go above and beyond, and this is Katzianer’s year.

“The awards ceremony recognizes outstanding accomplishments in the field of adult literacy and honors individuals, companies and organizations for their dedication in providing the gift of literacy to adults who confront life in Bergen County without the skills to effectively communicate,” the organization said.

“This is the 27th year the award has been given to a volunteer tutor who has excelled in bringing the light of literacy into the darkness of illiteracy for an adult by working one-to-one with students who have basic educational needs,” said Christopher Stout, executive director of Project Literacy.

Katzianer, a 26-year veteran of Verizon, “is a seasoned math teacher and has been volunteering his skills to provide one-to-one tutoring at Project Literacy since 2012,” the organization said.

Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood Police report that on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 an East side resident reported receiving a suspicious telephone call from a person claiming to be from the United States Internal Revenue Service who said that he/she owed back taxes. The caller requested the resident deposit the money in a Wells Fargo Bank account that they provided an account number for or risk arrest by the police.

While threatening with arrest, the caller also claimed to be from the Ridgewood Police Department. The caller was able to mimic real phone numbers for both the IRS and the Ridgewood Police Department. Fortunately the caller was suspicious and determined that the call was fraudulent.
These types of scams are on the rise and frequently target the elderly. Please be suspicious of calls or internet contacts requesting money and lookout for friends or neighbors who may be targeted by similar scams. Neither the IRS nor the Ridgewood Police Department would be contacting you by phone to request money. All defendants are considered to be innocent until found guilty by a court of law.

Ridgewood resident Bob Liwanag is a devout Roman Catholic, but he was a bit taken aback when his friends in town, Nick and Arlene DeLucca, suggested that he would be a great candidate to become a deacon.

“I didn’t feel worthy,” says the very humble Liwanag, who is now well on his way to achieving that lofty goal. Earlier this fall, he was one of 27 candidates who were blessed by the Archbishop of Newark, Bernard Hebda, in a an acolyte installation ceremony held at Mount Carmel Church in Ridgewood. More than 50 members of the clergy and about 350 guests were in attendance that evening.

The path Liwanag and his fellow candidates have accepted is not an easy one, especially now that a master’s degree in theology is one of the requirements. The goal is to be ordained as a deacon in the summer of 2016. At that point, Liwanag will be able to perform several duties that people usually associate with priests. For example, deacons can baptize babies, witness marriages and conduct funeral services. They will use their life experiences in the secular world to serve the church and the community at large. Although married men can become deacons, they cannot remarry if they become widowers, except by special dispensation.

“The apostles were the first deacons,” explained Liwanag. “They were instructed by Jesus to go out and serve the community.” That service to others is one of the ideals that drew Liwanag to his course of studies. “It may sound corny,” he said, “but everyone is called to serve God. It’s how you respond that makes the difference.”

At a time when the Planning Board is faced with a controversial request to add a high-density residential use to the Central Business District, residents of Goffle Road have approached the Planning Board with an opposite request: a blanket rezone that would turn the remaining residential lots on their road to commercial lots.

The proposal would allow homeowners to sell their lots to developers, possibly The Valley Hospital, and increase their home values, according to Goffle Road resident Ed Boscarino, who made the request.

“We on Goffle Road believe it would be to our benefit,” Boscarino told The Ridgewood News. “Developers would come in and build whatever the community needs, office buildings, mixed-use … Any office type of things would be very good for the village.”

Boscarino, a realtor, spoke to the board on Tuesday night about his idea, noting that he has spoken to other neighbors who were in favor of the proposal. Board Chairman Charles Nalbantian noted that he would look over Boscarino’s request and put it on a future agenda.

Ridgewood resident and international restaurateur Drew Nieporent returns to his roots

Ridgewood resident and international restaurateur Drew Nieporent returns to his roots

A new sign just went up in the window of 239 W. Broadway in Tribeca: Bâtard. The dining news website Eater.com quickly placed Bâtard at the top of its list of the hottest Manhattan establishments of the moment – declaring: “This is the restaurant that all the critics and fine dining lovers will be checking out this summer.”

But there are still other reasons why we all might care about this particular address and this new restaurant: The man behind it is not only a longtime Ridgewood resident, he also helped shape the American dining scene.

It was 1985 when restaurateur Drew Nieporent, then 29, opened his first restaurant, Montrachet, in a converted woodworking shop at that Broadway address. It was a highly pioneering move – most obviously in the neighborhood he chose, referred to in one review as an “alien ZIP code.”

The vision was also novel: a restaurant known not for its silver domes on plates and formal service but for a comfortable, genial atmosphere, even though this was no casual bistro. It had a $16 prix-fixe menu and no dress code (Nieporent was fond of asking guests to simply cover their feet and genitals).

Its executive chef was a then-unknown named David Bouley; the restaurant was quickly awarded a rare three stars from The New York Times.

Ridgewood resident to run with MR8 Boston Marathon charity team

When Ridgewood resident Kevin Entwistle, 21, heard about the bombing at last year’s Boston Marathon, a string of events followed. He became obsessed with the crushing TV news. He went on a run. And he decided to run his first marathon in Boston in 2014.

Ridgewood High School graduate Kevin Entwistle, 21, took a pre-marathon run on Thursday in his charity team’s MR8 shirt, in honor of 8-year-old Martin Richard, who died in the Boston Marathon bombing last year. Entwistle will run the marathon for Team MR8 this Monday, April 21.

The decision was natural; he felt a connection to the area his whole life. He has family in Massachusetts, he is a big Boston sports fan, and his father has run in the Boston Marathon twice.

“It was like an immediate response,” he recalled.

And one year later, without having even crossed the finish line yet – that will come this Monday, April 21 – Entwistle has already made Boston proud, by raising more than $7,100 for the charitable foundation created in honor of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old boy who was killed in the marathon bombings last year. Many Ridgewood residents are already among his donors, and he’s looking to other members of his local community to help raise even more money to reach, and hopefully surpass, his goal of $7,500.
