RIDGEWOOD — Police officials warned residents this week to be proactive about break-ins, which have been on the rise in the village.

Ridgewood’s Chief John Ward said that so far in 2015, there have been three residential burglaries in the village and two failed attempts.

Ward said 2015 was on pace to surpass the previous three years for burglaries and break-in attempts, noting there were 44 last year, 53 the year before, and 46 in 2012.

Ward told the council Wednesday his department was taking its own measures to reverse the trend, but said there are things Ridgewood residents can do to prevent their homes from being victimized.

“We are stepping up patrols, and using unmarked cars while making positive progress on leads,” Ward said, adding he’d like to see neighborhood watch programs return to the village.

“Residents and neighbors are your best defense, and that means giving up personal space and information,” Ward said.

Reader says Ridgewood residents, consider this your mission. Deny the mayor the victory he seeks in censoring and squelching public criticism of his radical agenda.

“We know how to…move…public opinion.”

Of course, we also know that this mission includes moving public opinion in Ridgewood toward agreeing with the Mayor Aronsohn and the two others of the three amigos, and toward round condemnation of their detractors, whatever the issue, and in whatever way their political goals may diverge from the best interests of the village.

Consider this, however: If the Mayor fails to accomplish this goal in a quiet municipality of less than 30,000 in the increasingly ‘blue’ northeast region of the U.S., he won’t ultimately be taken seriously by his co-religionists in the Church of Alinsky.

So this puts us in the enviable position of potentially snuffing out the political career of a would-be demagogue before it achieves critical mass, or, so to speak, ‘escape velocity’.

Ridgewood residents, consider this your mission. Deny the mayor the victory he seeks in censoring and squelching public criticism of his radical agenda.

Ridgewood residents seek support for restorations at Kings Pond

George Shabet brought a dead 3-foot carp to a council meeting in 1976 to prove a point: Kings Pond needed to be cleaned up.

Thirty-eight years later, he’s again trying to hook the council to take action on the pond, though this time with a more chummy approach.

He went before the governing body on Oct. 8 with only a sheet of paper containing his talking points, asking the council to consider appropriating money in the 2015 budget for dredging and dam repair.

At 334 Lakeview Drive, Kings Pond is virtually an extension of the Shabet’s front yard. They raised six children and now entertain 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild by the water’s edge, canoeing and fishing in the summer and ice skating in the winter.

The pond, located between Lakeview Drive and Mountain Avenue, is home to more than 40 species of birds and other wildlife. Although at one point the depth was about 3 feet, Shabet said the legs of the herons that come to feed stick up out of the water, meaning in some spots the pond is only a few inches deep.

The pond is also adjacent to the village’s leaf composting facility, where trucks drive in and out consistently throughout the day.

On Tuesday, Councilman Michael Sedon and Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck visited the Shabets with optimism that the pond’s shoreline could be cleaned up. Upon seeing it, they realized the job would require more effort and more funds.

Midland Park to contact Ridgewood about illegal parking by Ridgewood residents

MIDLAND PARK – The Borough Council will be reaching out to Ridgewood officials to rectify unsafe parking conditions along Maltbie Avenue when parents pick up their children at nearby Ridge Elementary School.

Residents of Maltbie, many living north of Franklin Avenue, attended the March 27 council meeting to share their experiences and frustrations with blocked driveways, illegal parking near stop signs and unsafe road conditions that are occurring on a regular basis.

“I have lived here for 30 years and the last five years have been unbearable,” said Lorraine DeLuca. “I avoid West Ridgewood Avenue from 2:45 to 3: 15 p.m. It is dangerous.”

Maltbie begins at Godwin Avenue and continues north, crossing Franklin Avenue, which becomes West Ridgewood Avenue, before ending at Busteed Drive. Ridge Elementary School is at 325 W. Ridgewood Ave.

Resident Arthur “Skip” Marchetti first brought the matter to the attention of Mayor Patrick “Bud” O’Hagan during a monthly “Coffee With the Mayor.”

Ridgewood residents can report potholes

Ridgewood residents can report potholes

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Motorists can do more than just hold their breath or silently swear at the pothole they just struck. Beginning Monday, residents can now go online or use their smartphones and tablet computers to report those fissures in the earth, and those notifications will go directly to the village..

The village website will re-launch on March 3 with a Ridgewood Service Request (RSR) feature that allows residents to use an interactive map to send pothole reports to municipal officials. Residents hoping to report a pothole must register to use the service.

“The resident can then go on the map and pinpoint where the pothole is located. The other option is to take a picture of the pothole and upload the picture on the report,” acting Village Manager Heather Mailander said. She further explained that the reporting service also includes a section where users can leave appropriate comments.

Once the pothole is reported to the streets department staff, Mailander said the village will begin work on it as soon as possible. The resident reporting the road hazard will ultimately receive emailed acknowledgements when the pothole is filled.
