Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood firefighters required shovels to free the driver of an Audi sedan who was trapped inside of her vehicle after it was broadsided by a BMW SUV on Friday afternoon, and pushed into a snowbank.  The accident occurred at approximately 2:20 PM in front of 81 North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood.  No one was injured in the collision, but the Audi and BMW both sustained major damage and were removed by separate tow trucks.  One summons was issued to the BMW’s driver in connection with the crash.  The BMW was exiting the King’s Shopping Plaza and collided with the Audi, which was traveling northbound on North Maple Avenue.

Ridgewood Gears Up for the Winter Storm

snowstorm_theridgewoodblog.net_-300x22152

This is Mayor Paul Aronsohn with another urgent weather-related message from the Village of Ridgewood.

A Winter Strom Warning has been issued from midnight tonight through 6 am Friday.

We are expecting 10-14 inches of heavy, wet, wind-swept snow. Travel conditions will be extremely dangerous.

In anticipation of the storm, our Office of Emergency Management has declared a local State of Emergency.

As such, please note the following four things:

First … all on-street parking will be suspended from midnight tonight through midnight Thursday. This is needed to facilitate snow plowing,

Ridgewood Police will enforce the parking ban by towing vehicles, if necessary.

Residents, however, may park vehicles overnight and tomorrow in the Hudson Street and Cottage Place lots in the Central Business District.

Second … please help us by keeping sidewalks and fire hydrants free of ice and snow.

Third … until snow conditions improve, sanitation will only be collected at the end of your driveway.

And fourth … and most importantly … please take extra care to stay safe and to keep those around you safe.

That means staying indoors to the extent possible.

That means checking in on your neighbors, particularly those who might have special needs and challenges.

This is going to be a big storm. Your safety and the safety of your family and neighbors is the most important thing.

Hotwire US

Thank you.

Weather woes stall Christmas tree pickup in Ridgewood

The Ridgewood News

Last year, 33 days separated Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, the typical lifespan of a Christmas tree inside one’s house before it is relegated to its final resting place. As of Friday, the new year is 38 days old.

Several dozen Ridgewood residents have expressed collective bewilderment and frustration when presented the revelation that their Christmas trees have spent more time curbside than they did decorated in their homes. This week’s snowfall blanketed streets and sidewalks, and many villagers have said their trees are still there and buried, waiting to be retrieved.

The village collects household Christmas trees after the holidays, asking residents to leave their undecorated firs, spruces and other evergreens by their curb for pickup. Residents also have the option of bringing their trees to the Graydon parking lot. Ridgewood converts the disposed trees into mulch for use in and around the village.

RIDGEWOOD — A celebratory spirit was in the air Friday evening, as residents both young and old saluted the Super Bowl’s coming to East Rutherford with a range of games while raising money for charities.

More than 40 village families gathered inside the old Bank of America building on E. Ridgewood Avenue, where the village-sponsored entertainment included a magician who dazzled the kids with slight-of-hand trickery. There were video games, pinball machines, and foosball on site, as well as bean bag games, ping pong tables and a putting green.

Vote on smoking ban set in Ridgewood

The Ridgewood Council will vote next month to officially ban smoking on sidewalks adjacent to Board of Education properties, a move that officials believe strengthens the village’s commitment to promoting a healthy community. The council last year passed an ordinance that prohibits smoking in all public parks.

A public hearing on the sidewalk smoking ordinance is scheduled for Feb. 19.

“I’m excited to see the municipality consider the smoke-free areas because it’s protecting children from second-hand smoke and encouraging them to never start smoking. It’s one of the best things you can do for kids,” said Alan Kantz, program manager at the Global Advisors on Smokefree Policy (GASP).

According to Kantz, 90 percent of adult smokers polled by GASP said they began smoking before the age of 18.

Ridgewood NJ, A Honda CR-V crashed through a 6-foot high chain link fence at the Somerville Elementary School’s athletic field on South Pleasant Avenue in Ridgewood late Tuesday afternoon.  It is believed the driver lost control of the vehicle after she drove over a speed hump, hit a patch of ice, then bounced off of a curb.  At least one air bag in the vehicle deployed; the driver was quite shaken up, but otherwise uninjured.  There were no pedestrians present in the area at the time of the accident.  The vehicle was removed by a flatbed tow truck.  The incident remains under investigation by Ridgewood PD.

Ridgewood to see hike in Super Bowl activities

Ridgewood to see hike in Super Bowl activities

The Ridgewood News

Though extra revenue is usually always welcomed, the prospect of making money isn’t the only reason Ridgewood is getting into the Super Bowl business.

Ridgewood has planned a smorgasbord of football-centric activities for the week leading up to the big game (see full list below), with most of those programs consisting of donated time and items. Participation in most of those programs is free of charge, and two larger venues are charging a nominal admission fee of $5.

The National Football League and the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee does not fund any non-sanctioned community events.

The host committee, the community-affairs arm of the Super Bowl, initially selected several North Jersey towns as a “place to visit” when the league announced MetLife Stadium as its host venue. Ridgewood was among the municipalities on the list, which also included the Meadowlands towns, Hoboken, Jersey City, Montclair and Newark, among others.

A group of village residents held brainstorming sessions with hopes of producing unique events for the town, but timing and logistics slowly thwarted large-scale plans. Still, that hasn’t stopped Ridgewood from planning a party.

Two summonses have been issued in relation to an AT&T cell phone tower that popped up on Franklin Turnpike several months ago without the approval of Ridgewood’s zoning board.

Not only was the roughly 100-foot tower placed there without approval, but no one on the zoning board, the approval entity for cell towers, was aware of it until last week.

On Thursday, an AT&T representative told The Ridgewood News that the company is aiming to find a permanent location for the tower.

The tower in question is temporary, standing on a trailer at the Exxon Mobil gas station on Route 17, behind a building located at 609 Franklin Turnpike.

Ridgewood is huddling up for the big game

New York might have the bright lights and attractions, but the biggest game in town will ultimately be played in New Jersey.

Many Garden State municipalities are jumping at the chance to capitalize on next month’s Super Bowl, which will take place in the heart of southern Bergen County at MetLife Stadium. And a little extra revenue for Main Street businesses isn’t the only name of this game – towns such as Ridgewood are also hoping to showcase their small-town charm and conjure up the residents’ Big Game spirit.

The Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce has organized a week-long Super Bowl pep rally, and the festivities include something for everyone, from the casual fan to the die-hard, from the novice to the Monday morning quarterback, from the gridiron rookie to its most aged veteran. And Jets and Giants fans don’t have to be green with envy or feel blue at home because their teams aren’t playing: Everyone’s invited to Ridgewood’s party.

Organizers have designated four major hubs where football action and activities will take place. The zone concept is something Ridgewood has used in the past, said Joan Groome, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.

Ridgewood will celebrate the arrival of the Super Bowl with waterside bonfires, chili cook-offs, live music and discounts galore — family-fun events designed to attract out-of-town visitors.

Ridgewood’s Pre-Game Celebration will run for a week before the big game and was organized by the Chamber of Commerce with involvement from various other village organizations.

The village had initially been singled out as a destination for Super Bowl attendees by the game’s local host committee, but “frankly, things didn’t work out,” according to Mayor Paul Aronsohn.

Ridgewood remained determined to do something to commemorate the Feb. 2 game in East Rutherford.
