Trenton NJ, Senator Declan O’Scanlon again sounded the alarm warning of the dire fiscal consequences of the Governor’s plan to borrow $10 billion to fill shortfalls in the State budget.

“This devastating scheme is fiscally indefensible and unconstitutional. There’s a legal opinion that says we cannot borrow without voter approval to fill a hole in our budget,” said O’Scanlon. “In the most unaffordable state in the nation, it is unfathomable the Governor and Democrats would propose a ‘solution’ of this magnitude.

Trenton NJ, Senator Declan O’Scanlon and Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso (both R-Monmouth) commented on a highly concerning letter from the Public Health Associations Collaborative Effort (PHACE) which expressed their major concerns over the lack of coordination between the New Jersey Department of Health and local health officials on the pandemic response.

“This is yet another deafening warning siren blaring at the Department that something is horribly wrong,” said O’Scanlon. “It is staggering that the NJDOH would not consult with such esteemed institutions and not tap into our State’s vast and established network of local health experts that truly understand the needs of our individual communities.”

Trenton NJ, Senator Declan O’Scanlon issued the following statement on the need to curtail Governor Phil Murphy’s emergency powers:

“Today, I signed onto a resolution that just strike me as peculiar. Peculiar in the sense that I never would have imagined the need for this to exist in a democracy. SCR-117 is intended to curtail the Governor’s power to issue emergency executive orders without reapproval by the legislature every 15 days. It’s a proposed constitutional amendment that if passed, would create a ballot question potentially altering our State’s constitution and let the public decide whether a Governor needs to have their power more frequently checked by the Legislature.

Trenton NJ, Senator Steven Oroho, Senator Declan O’Scanlon, and Senator Kristin Corrado said a superficial report commissioned by Governor Phil Murphy does not absolve his administration for its clear failures that led to the massive loss of life in New Jersey’s long-term care facilities due to COVID-19.

“The Murphy Administration paid a consulting firm $500,000 to rush a report that attempts to shift blame for thousands of nursing home deaths to anyone but the governor,” said Oroho (R-24). “What taxpayers received back is a glossy report that repackages the State’s data in colorful graphs and charts. The report glosses over the fact that the administration forced our LTC facilities to admit COVID-19 patients, which led to thousands of deaths. With that glaring deficiency, the entire report is suspect.”

Trenton NJ, Governor Murphy Fires Top State Official in Charge of Running Emergency Preparedness Office. NJGOP Chairman Doug Steinhardt comments on the firing of a the states’ top health official in charge of emergency preparedness in the middle of a pandemic , “The news reports of Governor Murphy firing the top state health official in charge of emergency preparedness in the middle of a pandemic are extremely concerning. Governor Murphy has shown poor judgement throughout this crisis, whether it was sending COVID-positive patients back to nursing homes, or failing to lay off idled public sector employees, and he needs to immediately provide information on this termination. Reports that this individual believes he’s being scapegoated only confirms what many suspect: Murphy has moved from spinning answers, deflecting questions, and hiding information from the public to an outright coverup of his administration’s failures. The people of New Jersey deserve better.
