Netflix to Shut Down DVD Rental, Plans to Give Away DVDs

Ridgewood NJ, Netflix is shutting down its DVD rental service on September 29. Customers can keep any remaining DVDs they have after the service shuts down. Subscribers can potentially receive up to 10 discs for free as Netflix clears out its inventory. Netflix will allow people to sign up to its DVD plan until midnight on August 28 for a chance to win the DVDs.

Netflix Founder and CEO Reed Hasting Steps Down

Ridgewood NJ , Netflix founder and co-CEO Reed Hastings is stepping down after more than two decades at the company. The company has been planning its next era in leadership for years and appointed Ted Sarandos as co-CEO in 2020. Greg Peters, the company’s current COO, will be promoted to co-CEO. Hastings will remain with Netflix as executive chairman of the board.

Netflix to Add Ads by Year End

Ridgewood NJ, Netflix plans to roll out an ad-supported tier in the final three months of this year. It will also roll out its plan to charge an extra fee for those who want to share accounts around the same time. Netflix’s decision to introduce the ad-supported tier was made due to Hulu and Disney’s success with the model. The company’s stock plummeted 37% after it announced its advertising plan and it has still not recovered.

Latest Numbers have Netflix Bleeding Subscribers in US and Canada

Ridgewood NJ, so much for Netflix and chill. Netflix lost 430,000 subscribers in the US and Canada in the second quarter. It predicted that it would add 3.5 million subscribers in the third quarter, a forecast that was weaker than expected. There are now more than 100 streaming services for consumers to choose from. Netflix is still the largest paid video streaming service, with more than twice the number of subscribers compared to Disney Plus, its closest competitor. It recently hired Mike Verdu, a veteran of the gaming industry, and plans to offer games to subscribers, perhaps they should focus more on the content .

Ridgewood NJ, if you are looking to follow the great debate tonight on line here are some options for streaming and social media .Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump will square off at 9 pm Eastern at Hofstra University.

Of course all of the networks and major cable outlets have an online presence, so of course they are streaming the debates along with digital-first outlets like Buzzfeed News, The Daily Caller, Huffington Post, Politico, and Yahoo. Telemundo, theWall Street Journal, and Hulu will stream it, too.

Also look for Facebook Live broadcasts from journalists and those packed into Hofstra. Twitter will use the same live streaming system it uses for Thursday night football, trading sacks for fact checks and leaning on Bloomberg for footage. The candidates won’t be wearing Specs, but Snapchat will compile Live Stories for bite-sized debate nuggets. YouTube will feature coverage from NBC News, PBS, Fox News, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, and Telemundo.

Digital takeover: 71% mags lose subscribers, online news overtakes TV

Online websites have now cemented their position as the nation’s No. 1 source of news, overtaking television and practically burying print publications six feet under as younger Americans embrace digital platforms.

The latest evidence comes from the circulation report on the nation’s top 125 magazines that found a six-month drop of 11.4 percent this year following a 14.2 percent drop in the last six months of 2014.

The biannual Alliance for Audited Media found that “total paid circulation” for 86 of 125 top magazines, or 71 percent, saw circulation drop, according to a new report in Media Life Magazine.
