Summer Jobs Season Approaching at Shore

The approach of Memorial Day means it’s summer jobs season at the New Jersey shore.

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (AP) — With Memorial Day soon approaching, it’s summer jobs season at the New Jersey shore.

Business owners tell The Philadelphia Inquirer (https://bit.ly/2oNZd6i) fewer international students have been applying for the seasonal positions in recent years, opening the door for more locals to get in on the action.

Businesses in Ocean City such as Gillian’s Wonderland Pier and numerous eateries hire hundreds of workers between the ages of 14 and 21 to start around mid-June. Most get paid a little more than minimum wage.

Above all, the business owners say, intelligence and an outgoing attitude is a must.

John Kavchok, personnel director for the Wonderland Pier, said most summer employees work six days a week and start at $8.50 an hour. Among the fringe benefits are a 25 percent discount on pizza and free rides.

Speaking of rides — ride operators must be 16 or older under state law, and Kavchok said the pier chooses employees for those jobs who are responsible and attentive.

Reader explans the loss of the WIBIT at Graydon Pool

WIBIT_theridgewoodblog

During the end of the season when the WIBIT was offered, it was vandalized (intentionally punctured) prior to it being stored for the winter. The cost to patch it up was significant enough to keep it in storage. Additionally, the WIBIT required a lifeguard to be present on it which limited staffing in other parts of the pool and the use did not justify that level of staffing. A water slide would have been a better use of the money.

This is what a WIBIT is: https://www.wibitsports.com/open-water/

The Center for Coastal Studies captured video of sharks feeding on the small minke whale carcass on Thursday

By Marc Fortier

Three beaches on Cape Cod were closed to swimming Friday after as many as six great white sharks were spotted feeding on a whale carcass.

The carcass later washed up near Noons Landing in North Truro. Noons Landing, Beach Point and Cold Storage beaches were declared off limits to swimmers.

Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital : Beach Safety Tips for the Dog Days of Summer

Ridgewood NJ, in a recent blog post by Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital reminds readers of a few safety tips for visiting the beach with your dog. ( https://www.ridgewoodvet.com/blog/2016/07/06/beach-safety-tips-for-the-172639 )

First its water safety , “Although some dogs seem to be natural swimmers, flat-nosed and barrel-chested breeds, like Bulldogs, have a hard time staying afloat. When in doubt, make sure that your dog is wearing a life vest, and never leave your pup unsupervised in or even near the water.”

“it’s always best to steer your pet toward calmer waters, away from speedboats and rough surf.” and of course , “try to keep your dog from guzzling too much salt water, which can lead to vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration. The water in lakes, ponds and streams can also be problematic and contain microorganisms that can lead to illness. ”

The next issue is the sun , it’s easy for canines to overheat, particularly such flat-nosed breeds as Pugs and Pekingese, which can succumb to the heat faster than others. So be sure to provide a cool place in the shade”

They also mention that , “Canines with pink or light-colored noses or thin, short coats are at a higher risk of developing sunburn and skin cancer. ” And for sun screen , “look for a fragrance-free pet sunscreen or a sunblock with broad spectrum UVA and UVB barriers. Apply the sunscreen to vulnerable areas, such as the nose, ear tips and belly — and try to keep your dog from licking it off before it fully soaks in. For dogs with thin, white coats, a T-shirt can also help further protect sun-vulnerable backs and tummies.”

As for the hot sand , “Chasing Frisbees across the hot sand can burn tender paw pads….So keep your pup’s paws protected with strap-on booties.’

At the end of the day, rinse your dog with clean water to remove any sand or salt from his coat. Use a towel to dry him off”

The annual Duck Derby was a great opportunity to beat the heat. As a reader said , “It was a fabulous day. My three sons had so much fun. But I was left wondering why the heck Gwenn Hauck was all over the place. She is no longer in office and frankly I was not happy to see her. Didn’t she get the memo that there is a new council in place?”

7 facts about the 2016 summer solstice, the official start of summer

300px-Stonehenge2007_07_30

By Len Melisurgo | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
on June 19, 2016 at 7:02 AM, updated June 19, 2016 at 7:34 AM

Unless you’re obsessed with astronomical clocks, you probably won’t even notice it. But when the sun sets in the western sky Monday, it will be the culmination of the longest day of the year.

June 20 is the summer solstice, marking the official start of the 2016 summer season — and the day with the most amount of sunlight all across the northern hemisphere.

While many New Jerseyans will be at the Shore or hitting other vacation spots as the solstice arrives, folks in other parts of the world will be holding traditional solstice celebrations that include drinking, feasting and dancing around big bonfires, singing songs and, in some places, going bare.

info@PreserveGraydon.org    PreserveGraydon.org

Ridgewood NJ, Every year, we hear from Parks & Rec that lifeguards trained to work at a sand-bottom facility are in short supply. Lifeguarding at Graydon requires a higher level of skill than is required at a concrete pool.

This summer, young people ages 15 and up may take the requisite course right at Graydon and become eligible to apply to be a lifeguard there. (Recertification for current lifeguards is offered separately.)This is an excellent and unusual opportunity.

All classes will be held at Graydon in July. A prerequisite fitness and endurance test will be held on Thursday, June 30. Details are in the yellow section of the flier reproduced below.

To get in the mood, click here (lyrics here).

Please pass this information to any young person you know who may be interested. Ridgewood residency is NOT required. The prerequisite test is on June 30.

Questions? Contact the Village Department of Parks & Recreation at 201-670-5560 (8:30am–4:30pmMondayFriday).

Summer fun the State of NJ is spending $27.3M per mile rebuilding Jersey Shore’s Route 35 Golden Highway

Road_work_theridgewoodblog
May 22,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, next time you make a trip to the Jersey shore take a ride on New Jerseys latest tourist attraction, the reconstruction of Sandy-battered Route 35 or the “Golden Highway”.

According to an Asbury Park Press investigation New Jersey taxpayers are being charged tens of millions of dollars in cost overruns. The press found that the project, announced by Gov. Chris Christie in 2013, is already $76 million over budget and a year behind schedule.

Asbury Park Press puts the potential final cost of $341 million , that means that the 12.5-mile road construction in Ocean County will cost a jaw-dropping $27.3 million per mile making it one of the most expensive road projects in the state.

The press also found that the state paid about $24.5 million to have three contractors essentially stop working during design and summer delays.

When the project was announced in 2013, the Governor stressed that “this is not just a resurfacing job.”
and the ,“This new road will be better and more durable in every way,” .

This should give you pause to think when Trenton politicians cry over the depleted state Transportation Trust Fund ,and look to raise gas taxes to fill their pockets .
