YWCA Offers Youth and Adult Synchronized Swimming! The YWCA Bergen County is offers synchronized swimming classes for ages 7 to adult at 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood. Instructor Laura Alt, certified US Synchronized Swimming coach, invites swimmers with at least Level 3 swim skills (swim the front crawl with coordination of side breathing, elementary back stroke, and tread water for 1 minute) to join in.
Synchronized swimming promotes healthy competition as an individual and as part of a team. It demands strong swimming skill, discipline and commitment on the part of its athletes. The Syncho Swim Program assists young athletes to strive for excellence while enjoying swimming. Synchro swim is a performance sport (similar to ice skating or ballroom dance) which is performed in deep water. A swimmer learns basic swimming strokes, body positions, and stunts that are choreographed into routines that are performed in front of judges or an audience.
The YWCA offers two levels of youth synchronized swim classes, Synchro Stars team, and an adult synchronized swim class. For details about Synchronized Swimming, please call 201-444-5600, ext. 400. Bring a swimsuit, cap, and goggles.

Open-water swimming sensation Charlotte Samuels made history on Saturday by becoming the first person to swim 21 miles across the New York Bight.

NJ teen prepares to make 20-mile swim from Long Island to Jersey ShoreCharlotte Samuels, of Ridgewood, is preparing to swim 20 miles from Long Island to the Jersey Shore. This should be no problem after what she accomplished last summer, swimming the 28-mile Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, the 20-mile Catalina Channel and the 21-mile English Channel. (Video by John Munson | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com)

Samuels, 17, began her journey at approximately 7:20 a.m. on Long Island’s Atlantic Beach and finished on the northern edge of Sea Bright, N.J., at 4:50 p.m. Though the Ridgewood teen had estimated that the swim would take 12 to 16 hours, she ended up cruising to a sub-10-hour finish.

While 10 hours in the water may seem daunting, it was a relatively smooth ride for Samuels, who last year completed a pair of 20-hour swims en route to becoming the world’s youngest Triple Crown swimmer.

Volunteer Charlotte Samuels teaches young swimmers from Camp YDP in Paterson how to Swim

Citizens For Swimming program

Swimming just part of the lesson for Ridgewood program

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

A group of inner-city children filed off big yellow school buses on Tuesday, excited for the day of swimming and fun that awaited them.

They came from Paterson, where accessible bodies of water are not very abundant, to idyllic Ridgewood and Graydon Pool as part of the Citizens For Swimming program.

Founded in 1968, Citizens For Swimming is a charitable initiative that brings about 75 kids out of the urban landscape and into suburbia, in order to give them nine days of fun and to teach them how to swim.

“I work in public health, so I know that learning to swim is really important for kids,” said Dawn Walter, who runs the program. “They’ll be in situations throughout their lives where, even if they don’t know how to swim, learning a little water safety can save their lives.

“Many of the kids move up several swim levels during their nine days of lessons,” she said. “We feel that teaching the kids to swim can help keep them safe for a lifetime.”

This seemed to be a theme among the volunteers, as two others expressed their desire to teach the kids how to swim out of concern for their long-term safety.

Unusual calendar causes quirk to schedule at Ridgewood’s Graydon Pool

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

An early start to the school calendar, a late Sept. 7 date for Labor Day and the return of many teachers on the last day of August has caused a quirk in the schedule for Graydon Pool this year.

The pool is currently scheduled to cease weekday operations on Aug. 31.

During a work session last Wednesday, the Village Council discussed potential ways to make up for the lost days of available swimming, including the possibility of opening earlier during the pre-season.

This fall, students will return to school on Sept. 2 with teachers arriving on Aug. 31, which impacts the village’s ability to properly staff Graydon Pool during that final week before Labor Day.

Councilman Michael Sedon floated the idea of opening the pool to residents during the morning in June. Beginning on June 6, Graydon is scheduled to open at noon and close at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays while opening at 10 a.m. on weekends. Sedon proposed to have Graydon open at 10 a.m. on all days until regular season hours commence on June 19.

“I thought maybe a compromise might be opening it up in the pre-season earlier for an additional two hours,” Sedon said. “You would already have staff there, you would already have everybody doing what they would do at the pool, you would just have to do it two hours earlier for, I believe, nine days in the pre-season and there is a cost associated with that.”

THE RECORD

Of course the world record is important. Of course a person who attains the highest achievement in her sport should be congratulated.

But when Camille Stern greeted her granddaughter Charlotte Samuels at Newark Liberty International Airport on Saturday for the first time since Charlotte became the youngest person ever to complete three of the most grueling events in open-water swimming, she had something more important to say.

“I missed you, honey,” Stern said to Charlotte, as they pressed their foreheads together and smiled into each others’ eyes.

“I missed you, too, Grandma,” said Charlotte, the Ridgewood girl who at age 16 has attained the Triple Crown of open-water swimming by circumnavigating Manhattan, and crossing California’s Catalina Channel and the English Channel — all this summer.

After three weeks in England, Charlotte returned home to New Jersey on Saturday. Like the rest of her trip across the ocean, her homecoming was humble and spontaneous, cradled by the arms of her family.

THE RECORD

Charlotte Samuels cried her way across the English Channel.

She cried because she is small and her challenge was big: A 16-year-old girl chasing a world record, swimming for miles in open water through the blind dark night.

She cried because she was lucky: Most channel attempts require a year of planning and worry, but somehow she hired a boat and a crew in weeks.

She cried because she is loved: As she sprinted the final three miles to France, her parents chanted encouragement every time she lifted her head for air.
