Feds to Investigate Safety of Crumb Rubber Turf Fields

RHS stadium theridgewoodblog.net 2
by Linda McNamara

The Ridgewood Board of Education is proposing more artificial turf for Stevens  Field,a district owned field,  despite mounting evidence that it  presents significant  health and safety concerns for those using the fields and to the environment. A recent article in the NJEA Review Magazine ,” Use it? Ban it? quotes  the following statements from Dr. Philip Landrigan, a  Public Health and Pediatrics Professor at Mount Sinai :“ The companies that are marketing the fields don’t talk about the heat hazards, they don’t talk about the chemical hazards,  they don’t talk about the costs that are going to be associated with dismantling the fields when they reach the end of their natural life span, when they must be treated as hazardous waste ….. a better solution is to build fields that are properly drained and are planted with tough species of grass that do not require pesticides.”

The Ridgewood Board of Education is surveying parents, guardians & staff on possible changes to the 2019-20 school calendar

June 2,2018

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood Board of Education is considering changes to the 2019-2020 school year calendar that would increase the number snow days, schedule a full week for the February Recess and maintain the April Recess intact. A brief survey will be emailed to parents, guardians and staff to get feedback on the options under consideration.

The survey will be emailed on Thursday, May 31 to all Ridgewood Public Schools parents, guardians and staff with emails addresses on file and be open through Friday, June 8.

Survey takers will be asked to provide input on a draft calendar for 2019-2020 that raises the number of snow days from two to four, with a proviso that unused snow days will be converted to long weekends after the winter season ends. Under consideration is a start date in late August in order to provide a full week off for each of the February and April breaks and end school the third week in June in time for summer camp start dates and college orientations.

The draft revisions for 2019-2020 were developed to address the issues that arise when there is an excess of school closings due to weather emergencies. This year the district used four snow days, requiring students and staff to make up two instructional days during the Spring Recess week. The Board also is interested in offering a week-long February Recess, which this school year consisted of a long weekend.

Questions about the survey may be emailed to calendarsurvey@ridgewood.k12.nj.us

The Ridgewood Board of Education $110,000,000 Budget Vote Tonight !

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, the Board of Education budget vote is tonight. The BOE will be voting on a $110,000,000 school budget and to increase the school tax by 3.62%. The meeting starts at 7:30, & public comment is first. I know people have busy lives, but anyone who does not speak up now, should have no excuse to complain later. This number gets compounded year after year after year.

The school budget is 65% of our tax dollars, so this is going to be a big hit. 2 of the 5 board members believe they can keep the budget within the cap, and without losing any teachers/programs at the schools. I would like to see the entire board to work together to achieve that.
