Valley Hospital

February 13,2018

the staff of the Ridgewood

Ridgewood NJ, councilmen Ramon Hache gave us an update on the Valley Hospital Litigation and what it means for the Village of Ridgewood . According to the councilmen , “On December 29, 2017, the New Jersey Department of Health granted The Valley Hospital a Certificate of Need to relocate its acute care and inpatient facility from Ridgewood to Paramus. The Village Council did not receive a copy of the Department of Health letter via email until January 22, 2018. The granting of the Certificate of Need now puts into play certain factors of the settlement agreement pertaining to the existing Ridgewood campus.”

Hache goes on , “During the 120 days that follow, the Village Planning Board will be working to adopt an amendment to the H zone ordinance that will make the existing Ridgewood facility conforming as to the existing bulk dimensions and size of the current facility to satisfy the terms of the settlement agreement. Simply put, this will allow interior and exterior changes to be made to the existing Ridgewood facility buildings as long as no additional square footage or height is added to the existing buildings. A copy of the settlement agreement is available upon request to the Village. “

Ridgewood its Flu Season : the CDC recommends some everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs

flu-fever

January 20,2018

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, its flu season and the CDC recommends some everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.

In New Jersey, the Department of Health stated that the influenza activity has been high, over 1,300 cases reported. There has also been 18 outbreaks this flu season at long-term care facilities.

Influenza-like illness (ILI) is defined as fever (> 100°F [37.8°C], oral or equivalent) and cough and/or sore throat (in the absence of a known cause other than influenza). For long term care facilities, fever is defined as 2°F above baseline temperature

Valley Hospital ,”outbreaks of influenza are on the rise as flu season enters full swing”

flu shot

January 8,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood Nj, according to Valley Hospital ,outbreaks of influenza are on the rise as flu season enters full swing. Thirty-six states (so far NJ is not among them) have already reported widespread influenza activity to the federal Center’s for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention. Check out these tips from the CDC to protect yourself and your family from the flu.

Prevention and Control of Seasonal Influenza with Vaccines, 2017-18

Primary Changes and Updates to the Recommendations

This report updates the 2016–17 recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) regarding the use of seasonal influenza vaccines (MMWR Recomm Rep 2016;65[No. RR-5]). Routine annual influenza vaccination is recommended for all persons aged ≥6 months who do not have contraindications. A licensed, recommended, and age-appropriate vaccine should be used.

For the 2017–18 season, quadrivalent and trivalent influenza vaccines will be available. Inactivated influenza vaccines (IIVs) will be available in trivalent (IIV3) and quadrivalent (IIV4) formulations. Recombinant influenza vaccine (RIV) will be available in trivalent (RIV3) and quadrivalent (RIV4) formulations. Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV4) is not recommended for use during the 2017–18 season due to concerns about its effectiveness against (H1N1)pdm09 viruses during the 2013–14 and 2015–16 seasons. Recommendations for different vaccine types and specific populations are discussed. No preferential recommendation is made for one influenza vaccine product over another for persons for whom more than one licensed, recommended product is available.

Updates to the recommendations described in this report reflect discussions during public meetings of ACIP held on October 20, 2016; February 22, 2017; and June 21, 2017. New and updated information in this report includes the following:

Vaccine viruses included in the 2017–18 U.S. trivalent influenza vaccines will be an A/Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1)pdm09–like virus, an A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2)-like virus, and a B/Brisbane/60/2008–like virus (Victoria lineage). Quadrivalent influenza vaccines will contain these three viruses and an additional influenza B vaccine virus, a B/Phuket/3073/2013–like virus (Yamagata lineage).
Information on recent licensures and labelling changes is discussed, including licensure of Afluria Quadrivalent (IIV4; Seqirus, Parkville, Victoria, Australia); Flublok Quadrivalent (RIV4; Protein Sciences, Meriden, Connecticut); and expansion of the age indication for FluLaval Quadrivalent (IIV4; ID Biomedical Corporation of Quebec, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada), previously licensed for ≥3 years, to ≥6 months.
Pregnant women may receive any licensed, recommended, age-appropriate influenza vaccine.
Afluria (IIV3; Seqirus, Parkville, Victoria, Australia) may be used for persons aged ≥5 years, consistent with Food and Drug Administration–approved labeling.
FluMist Quadrivalent (LAIV4; MedImmune, Gaithersburg, Maryland) should not be used during the 2017–18 season due to concerns about its effectiveness against influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses in the United States during the 2013–14 and 2015–16 influenza seasons.

This report focuses on the recommendations for use of vaccines for the prevention and control of influenza during the 2017–18 season in the United States. A Background Document containing further information and a summary of these recommendations is available. These recommendations apply to licensed influenza vaccines used within Food and Drug Administration–licensed indications, including those licensed after the publication date of this report. Updates and other information are available at CDC’s influenza website (Influenza (Flu)). Vaccination and health care providers should check CDC’s influenza website periodically for additional information.

Shoveling Snow: Winter Chore or Health Hazard?

Snow Blizzard of 2016 Ridgewood CBD

January 6,2017

by George Becker, M.D., Director, Emergency Department, The Valley Hospital

Ridgewood NJ, Believe it or not, winter has officially begun! And, although there has been a lack of significant snowfall and cold temperatures in our area, we should still be prepared for the possibility of more seasonable weather.

Typical winters in the Northeast are beautiful, especially after a fresh snowfall. However, as many of us know, the arrival of snow means that it is time to dust off our shovels and get to digging! We understand that shoveling snow is our winter norm, but did you know that shoveling snow can actually pose a serious cardiac health risk to some of us?

In fact, although most people are not in danger from shoveling, the American Heart Association (AHA) still shares useful tips for anyone shoveling snow in the winter. To begin with, the AHA recommends that those who don’t exercise on a regular basis, those that have a medical condition, or those that are middle age or older consult with a doctor before shoveling.

The AHA also has the following general tips for staying safe while shoveling:
Take frequent rest breaks during shoveling.
Don’t eat a heavy meal prior or soon after shoveling.
Use a small shovel or consider a snow thrower.
Don’t drink alcoholic beverages before or immediately after shoveling.
Be aware of the dangers of hypothermia.
Learn the heart attack warning signs and listen to your body.
Some signs that you might be having a heart attack are pain in the chest, arm(s), back, neck, jaw or stomach. You might also break out in a cold sweat, feel short of breath, nauseated, lightheaded, or uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness in the center of your chest.

If you are concerned that you may be having a heart attack, you should not hesitate about seeking medical treatment—every minute is crucial when experiencing a heart attack. Call 911 immediately or head directly to the closest emergency room.

Our Emergency Department, located at 223 N. Van Dien Avenue in Ridgewood, NJ is open 24/7, 365 days a year and is staffed with physicians who are board certified in emergency medicine.
