Dominick Nizza of Ridgewood, New Jersey 1922 – 2016

U.S. VeteranDominick Nizza passed away at the age of 94. A long time resident of Ridgewood the self-proclaimed “Mayor of Robert Street,” had quite a life even before landing in Ridgewood where he purchased his home in the “Lawns” back in 1948.

Born in Jersey City in 1922 to Italian immigrants some of Dominick’s earliest memories revolve around music, a lifetime passion he has carried throughout his many careers. His father was a shoemaker who once traded shoe repairs to a customer in exchange for singing and violin lessons for Dominick at the age of 10.
He graduated from Union City High School where he played in the marching band. During WWII Dominick entered into service with the U.S. Army as a mechanical engineer and worked for Bell Laboratories in New York.
Dominick learned to dance before entering the service, which would come in handy later in life when he opened up three Arthur Murray dance studios in New York City and then three of his own studios in New Jersey.
Dom became an “unofficial matchmaker” for his fellow servicemen while in Texas. When they left the base to unwind in local taverns he would dance with women and then introduce them to his friends. He would dance with a gal, and say “’Well, I want you to meet Joe and so it went. Then back in the barracks he would start to teach the guys some simple steps, the Lindy Hop and various basic dance moves. That’s when he came home one day and figured, “Gee, I could make money in the dance business”. Dominick opened up Antoine Studios, which then changed to Dale Studios when he began teaching dance instructors.
As a dance instructor he met his wife of 56 years, Mary, and six months later they were married and lived in North Bergen for a short period. They moved to “The Lawns” section of Ridgewood. He bought one of the 450 homes built for $10,250, a price far less than what the average village homeowner now pays in Ridgewood’s annual taxes.
Tapping into his background as a dancer and tumbler, Dominick Nizza and Tony Napier started a gymnastics program at Ridgewood High School. He helped to raise money in 1969 to purchase the school’s basic gymnastic equipment, and arranged to hold a gymnastics open house with professional gymnasts.
Dominick was involved with the Frank Thorne Chapter of barbershop singers, and would regularly put out a newsletter for barbershop news well before computers became widespread. He worked with the Public Relations Officers Bulletin Editors (PROBE) to send out information on barbershop groups and activities.
After working in a machine shop and owning his own personnel agency Dom began another career as a clerk in the County Courthouse in Hackensack. He would serve there for 25 years and became president of the Bergen County Superior Court Clerks Association.
He raised four sons with his wife Mary who passed away in 2001. Dominick was active in local politics and was an avid gardener who loved to giveaway tomato plants and flowers to everyone.
He is survived by four sons: Phil. Tom, John and Chris and four grandsons.
Funeral service will be held Friday, June 3 2016 at 8:00 PM at the C C Van Emburgh Funeral Home, 306 E Ridgewood Ave, Ridgewood, NJ 07450. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 PM

Council Elect Ramon M Hache , Today we honor the brave men and women who have proudly served this great nation and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We should honor them everyday, as well as their families, by loving and respecting the greatest nation in the world. As I do every Memorial Day, I like to read, reflect upon, and share the letter of condolences from President Abraham Lincoln to Mrs. Lydia Bixby who was believed to have lost five sons during the Civil War:

Dear Madam,–

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Dear Friends,

Since the founding of our country, there have always been brave men and women who understood what it takes to protect our freedom and democracy. And there has always been a grateful nation that understands that everything we have is because of their bravery. They are the very best that America has to offer.

Today, we remember those who gave their lives in service to the United States and we thank them for their sacrifice. Our words will never be able to express what their service meant to us, but we can continue to honor them with our actions. We can continue to live our lives in freedom and stand up to tyranny and oppression in whatever form it takes. It is our responsibility to pass along the gift of liberty that many in our armed forces died to protect.

To those who have lost family, friends, and loved ones—please know that our country stands with you today and every day, humbled by the sacrifice you have given to protect freedom and democracy. RAIN UPDATE : Memorial Day Events Today in Ridgewood

Good evening.  This is Mayor Paul Aronsohn with a special announcement about our Memorial Day activities.  In light of the expected rain storms, we are making contingency plans.

Regarding the American Legion Sponsored Memorial Day Service scheduled for 11am … the Service will be conducted rain or shine, but if it is raining, we will hold the Memorial Day Service in Mount Carmel Church at the same time, 11am.

Regarding the North Jersey Masters Ridgewood Run scheduled to start at 8:15am … the Run will also happen rain or shine, UNLESS the weather becomes dangerous.

Ridgewood NJ, The two major events on Memorial day in the Village of Ridgewood today . First there is the Fred D’Elia Ridgewood Run at Veteran’s Memorial Field, Monday at 8 a.m. and the American Legion Post 53 will host a service at Memorial Park Monday at 11 a.m. in Van Neste Square on East Ridgewood Avenue.

The Ridgewood Run is the premier road race in northern New Jersey and one of the longest running races in the tri-state area and the Village of Ridgewood Memorial Day commemoration is honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Please leave plenty of time for travel the Fred D’Elia Ridgewood Run leaves many roads inaccessible .

Ridgewood Village Council Passes New Sign Resolution

Ridgewood NJ, the Village council passed a new sign resolution no. 16-137 effective 5/4/16. This allows
“A Frame” type signs on the sidewalks of the CBD until December 31, 2016
The Chamber of Commerce will be handed out a copy of the resolution on Monday 23, 2016 to Chamber members.
-The placement of any sign must not interfere with
pedestrian safety
-No sign shall be permitted to constrict the 52-inch
area of the sidewalk utilized by pedestrians.
-All signs must be removed at close of business.
-You need to contact the Village of Ridgewood with a
valid, current certificate of insurance, naming the Village of Ridgewood as additional insured for Comprehensive General Liability.
This must be done one week before placement of sign.
Signs are allowed during Sale Days meaning today.
Side street businesses during Sale Days only.
Can have one sign at the corner, place out of the way of pedestrian. Other stores must keep their signs in front of their own locations.

Shakespearean tragedy in Ridgewood

Ridgewood NJ, The CRR vs. PB and Valley complaint reads like a Shakespearean tragedy (or comedy), brought about by Valley’s scorched earth tactics and Gail Price’s hubris.  How so?
First, during those “Whispering Woods” hearings, Valley attack dog/super lawyer Jon Drill sends an oh-so polished legal brief to the Board demanding Wendy Dockray be recused for being on Jeff Voigt’s campaign team.  What a smarty pants Jon must have thought he was.  But OOPS, wait a minute Jon, guess you didn’t know that Valley’s second favorite attorney, Ms Gail Price, is married to candidate Richard Brooks? (Hurrah for women who retain their maiden names.)  You didn’t see that one coming, did ya?  And as a good attorney like Jon knows, the ethics rules that govern lay people (like Dockray) go QUADRUPLE for attorneys. It’s called the “appearance of impropriety” standard, meaning CRR doesn’t need to prove there will be a new “Price-Brooks” wing at Valley; there just needs to be the potential for some stank.  But to make it ACTUALLY stanky, when confronted with the conflict allegation in public, Gail still refused to step down as PB attorney and went straight to Facebook and threatened anyone in Ridgewood with “libel” for mentioning that she and Rich are married.
Gail hurdled “impropriety” and went straight to the “F–k you all, I know what’s best for Ridgewood” standard.  That’s why I’m betting we say bye-bye to that mediated settlement, and perhaps to Gail as well. And as for Drill, though he can’t unhoist himself from that petard, I’m thinking Queen Audrey will give him a reprieve because she didn’t know Price and Brooks were married either.

Village of Ridgewood and the High Fees for Dog Licenses

Ridgewood NJ, several readers in recent weeks mentioned that Ridgewood charges the highest fee for dog licenses and yet the Village of Ridgewood does not even have an animal control officer?

Some residents have suggested that the Village seems hostile towards dogs. Which is funny, because I also think a lot of people in town have dogs.
Other towns charge $9 – $13 for neutered dogs while Ridgewood charges $18 per dog , and of course the late fees are very high .

Dog Licenses

Dog licenses are renewed during the month of June. One and three year licenses are available starting June 1st with a valid rabies certificate.
For 1 year licenses: Rabies Certificate that expires no earlier than May 1st of the following year.
For 3 year licenses: Rabies Certificate that expires no earlier than May 1st of the third year. (Example: a 3 year license purchased in June of 2012 will need a rabies certificate valid through May 1, 2015)

Beginning in the 2013 licensing year, renewal reminders will be sent via email. An application will be available on the website or in person at the health department. Renewal applications will be mailed upon request by calling 201 670-5500 ext 503. A Late Fee of $20.00 per dog will be assessed after June 30th.

It is the dog owner’s responsibility to renew the dog license when it expires. It is also the dog owner’s responsibility to maintain their pet with a valid rabies vaccination. The health department sends out reminders as a courtesy and to inform residents of our free rabies clinic.

The over-developers paired with the Paul V.s of the village are playing the long game to draw families here to multi bedroom rentals with our schools as the magnetic force. It is very simple. Problem is, our schools are over capacity and our high school is well past capacity. So, how will our schools stay at the top? They can’t. That doesn’t concern the local developer, he’ll have sold by then. It will be someone else’s problem. It is simple and undeniably true. They lie about Brogan and Ken Smith parking spaces needing to be replaced, spots that are not a part of the public parking inventory. “Smiling faces with hidden agendas”.

The garage is the Trojan Horse. The village now admits, we don’t need more parking, we don’t even utilize what we have.

The full day kindergarten should be voted DOWN in Nov. When studies were presented for multifamily housing, the ‘expert’ assumed new staffing for full day kindergarten was already in place. If we vote the full day Kindergarten down, then the schools will not have funding for new teachers needed to serve newly built apartments. At that point hopefully the builders will be charged an impact fee, instead of sneaking the higher cost caused due to apartments in the name of the KG program.

Reader says if you can’t manage the small stuff then the big stuff is insurmountable in Ridgewood

This is absolutely ridiculous. Why the heck in this day and age can’t these people manage their email messages. They are paid plenty. If someone sends them an email the bounce-back should be timely. It should not be six months old. Shows a total disregard for the citizens who want to contact them. Maybe a minor issue compared to some, but really if you can’t manage the small stuff then the big stuff is insurmountable.
