We thought we would share an opinion piece that was written by a resident for the “Tips From Town” website.
The recent decision by the Planning Board to approve the amendment of our master plan to allow for 35 units an acre, three times what is currently allowed, has me experiencing a flood of negative emotions, everything from sadness, to fear, to anger.
A recent article in North Jersey.com, notes all three of the builders left the vote with big smiles on their faces, and why wouldn’t they? It feels very much as if the 6 out of 9 members who voted “Yes” had exactly the builders’ satisfaction and approval in mind when they cast their careless vote. Many are arguing they may have had some more selfish motives in mind, but I won’t speculate. The four builders who originally petitioned for the change asked for 55 units/acre, probably hoping for half that, and the Town Planning Board, whose responsibility should be to the residents of Ridgewood, nodded their heads like puppets, and essentially said, “Whatever you need to turn a profit at the expense of our village.” Thank you to the three members who voted no.
I know the town needs to change with the times. I support multi-family housing development, just not at this density. There is no doubt if the Village Council supports the Planning Board’s recommendation, we Ridgewood residents are in for a helluva time. I can barely drive through town now with all the congestion. Imagine what this will do to traffic. It took months to “improve” the underpass at Garber square, what will this kind of massive construction do to the safety and usability of downtown? And, that is just in the short term.
If you agree, please share with your neighbors and consider signing the petition to let our council know just how many residents are opposed to the proposal before them
How is the Mayor friend Saracino and his fish restaurant going to make it without the parking garage in his backyard? I have one question. Are the taxpayers also to pay for the extra large bronze plaque that will hang on the garage wall memorializing the 3 Amigos as the ones that brought Ridgewood out of the dark ages or will it be donated by Saracino and Vaggiois?
Yes the same Developer who purchased the tickets for the council to the Chris Christie event in violation of the “gift ordnance ”
“The council is considering adding a non-binding referendum” What a tease. The key word is “Considering ” They are just throwing out there to make residents believe that the 3 amigos have the residents interest in mind. I wonder if this referendum will contain all the pertinent information such as the told cost plus interest from bonding? Does everybody feel good now they that publicly put out this headline. “The council is considering adding a non-binding referendum to the November ballot to gauge support for a parking garage downtown.” The question is after all that has happened ‘Do you real trust them”

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
Connectivity between all the main facilities in Ridgewood has nearly been achieved with the village’s Fiber Loop project close to completion.
For the past year, the Signal Department has been installing, splicing, connecting and maintaining 125,000 feet of fiber throughout Ridgewood and Glen Rock. While Glen Rock’s installation was completed a few months ago, Ridgewood still needs to install fiber lines between the Water Pollution Division and Village Hall.
“This is big,” said Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld at a recent council meeting. “They have been working on this diligently for a long time.”
The Fiber Loop project connects the Fire Department buildings, the Emergency Services Fleet facility and the water pollution control site, among others. In all, seven facilities are currently connected to Village Hall, said Dylan Hansen, the village’s network administrator.

Citizens for a Better Ridgewood
Ridgewood NJ, Last night, our petition was treated as if it was a joke. The community outreach that should of occurred before this major decision was made, never happened. It has all fallen in the laps of concerned citizens who simply care about their surroundings. Please make sure each and everyone of you are registered to VOTE. We will show our disappointment during the next election cycle or even earlier than that if need be. Spread this petition and have all household members who are 18 and over sign this as well.
VOTE NO on the High-Density Housing Amendment at 35 Units Per Acre! ** LAST MINUTE PETITION! **

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
Like clockwork, placards marking the homes of new Ridgewood High School graduates are popping up on front lawns throughout the village. It’s a spring tradition embraced by the community, one signifying proud parents and reasons to celebrate.
The end-of-school rituals, namely proms and graduations, are always joyous events. In recent years, however, it’s become custom that those occasions are preceded with sobering advice and warnings about the dangers of over-celebrating, particularly if alcohol and drugs enter the equation.
Members of the Ridgewood Municipal Alliance Committee have taken the lead locally in spreading the word of those dangers, and they’ve initiated a campaign this season that delivers a message supplementing the drunken driving cautions that typically come at this time of year.
The “Parents Who Host, Lose the Most” program is directed primarily to adults who are hoping celebrate a child’s prom and graduation. Its tagline, “Don’t be a party to teenage drinking,” speaks directly to parents and guardians.
“Over the years, we know there have been parents who have hosted parties for their kids. This is a particularly good time to do it – it’s spring and you have graduations and proms,” explained committee chairwoman Sheila Brogan. “What we want to do through this campaign is enlighten parents about the liability and risks that are involved in serving alcohol to underage drinkers, kids in high school and college.”

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
In conjunction with Building Safety Month events that happened all over the United States, the Ridgewood Building Department staff presented a public forum in May, which focused on home safety along with changes being implemented within the village.
Over the course of about two hours, Building Department Director Thomas Yotka presented the audience with a history of building codes, demonstrating how they have evolved over the course of the past 2,000 years, before bringing the conversation back to the new initiatives happening in Ridgewood.
Oftentimes, changes in building codes happened in reaction to major disasters such as the Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston in 1942 and the Station Nightclub in Rhode Island in 2003.
Up until the mid-1970s, each municipality had its own unique set of building codes. Then in 1975, the legislature wrote a new law that went into effect on Jan. 1, 1977, bringing uniformity to codes throughout New Jersey.
These codes are what give the Building Department the blueprint to ensure that any structure standing within the village is safe for occupancy.
In accordance with the Codes of the Village of Ridgewood, the Boroughs of Glen Rock and Midland Park, and the Township of Wyckoff, Stage I water restrictions in Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Midland Park, and Wyckoff, New Jersey are in effect beginning June 1, 2015 and ending August 31, 2015.
Residents, businesses, governmental agencies, and all other water users must adhere to the Stages of the restrictions shown on our website.
Ridgewood Water has recently simplified water restrictions. The new plan matches odd and even addresses with days of the week.
If your address is an odd number, you may irrigate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays only. If your address is an even number, you may irrigate on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays only. A handheld hose may be used at any time including Mondays.
This plan will be in effect each year starting on June 1st and will continue through August 31st. If conditions warrant, irrigation will be prohibited on additional days of the week up to and including a total ban on irrigation.
Compliance with the initial restrictions will reduce the likelihood that more severe controls will be needed. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Violators will be subject to a fine and court appearance
May 26,2015

The Ridgewood Police Department (RPD) has chased a bear up a tree on Highland Avenue. RPD is working with the NJ Department of Fish and Wildlife to handle this situation appropriately.
The current approach is to continue to station officers with the bear until nighttime when we will wait for the bear to descend from the tree. We have decided to wait until nighttime as the area is abuzz with barbecues and activity and do not want this to be disrupted. We will have an RPD unit monitor the bear’s location as best as possible going forward.
To resolve this incident, the most important thing residents in the area can do is not to have garbage out (this bear was in our community to eat) and to take bird feeders in.
Going forward as a community we need collectively to take measures to discourage bears from wandering into Ridgewood. It is really imperative that garbage is secured – rifling through the garbage to find food is the primary reason that bears come into residential neighborhoods. The existence of bird feeders is also a problem and attracts wildlife such as bears. More information on bears and what residents can do can be found at the NJ Department of Fish and Wildlife’s website – www.njfishandwildlife.com.

Roberta Sonenfeld

Progress needed in level of leadership
To the Editor:
The current controversy about sidewalks for Clinton Avenue illustrates how paralyzed community leadership is in our town. Going back to arguments about the size of newer PSE&G power poles, it seems that the only way community improvements can be made over the objections of a very small group of residents is when the ultimate authority to do so is entirely out of the council’s hands. Ridgewood needs to progress beyond the “not this, not that” level of leadership in community development.
We have got to move away from Washington, D.C.’s political gridlock and realize that “NO” is NEVER a plan. We are extremely fortunate in having talented and committed villagers, both as residents and leaders, but we seem to have a cumulative inability to articulate systems-wide community solutions that move us in a positive direction.
Access to Ridge School is a traffic disaster that never goes away. One cause is the utter failure in long-term planning that allowed for dead end streets without sidewalks, lack of “walkable” right of ways accessing the rear of school properties, and the failure to install sidewalks on access streets.
The solution is obvious, but it means residents of some streets have to give up their current street designs and also accept parking in front of their houses. If any one group of residents can convince the council to veto system-wide community improvements for our town, no matter what the issue, then the council essentially abdicates its leadership responsibilities to other sources of authority.
