Reader says anyone who defends the status quo Parking Meters here can only be a part of the problem.
…and how amy millions will the new parking meters cost? with the added bonus of tracking residents shopping and parking habits via credit card use. Way to go.
— How about:
1) get all of the stolen money back
2) implement REAL security for the quarters – not just toss them in a open buckets in an unguarded closet.
New security measures have already been put into place which make future thefts much more difficult – so why do we need to spend millions on new parking meters?
So your argument is “let’s not install smart meters that will avoid any slippage for villagers” ? What kind of a Luddite are you ? New meters might threaten the long standing tradition of municipal employees stealing quarters to pay for personal entertainment or help with the mortgage or money launder it through AC, so let’s protest against them? Sorry , anyone who defends the status quo here can only be a part of the problem. We’re not falling for it.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
Soon after she received accolades from the Ridgewood Board of Education this week, Charlotte Samuels, the 16-year-old world-record swimmer, made an admission: She’s already thinking about conquering the Ocean’s Seven. For those unfamiliar with the feat, which has been accomplished by only six people, it consists of open-water swims through channels from each of the seven continents.

Parking Meter Scandal : he could not have acted alone
While ,Village officials said a forensic accounting firm has been retained to examine how a former employee managed to steal $460,000 in quarters from parking meters.

Although I’m not convinced that all meters would need to be replaced in order to implement a closed container/collection system, I’ll give the Village Manager the benefit of the doubt.
But, at a minimum, they should deep six those open white paint buckets/pickle containers and have all collectors use the carts depicted here:
https://www.pom.com/collectionsystems.htm
Continuing to use those buckets is a huge security risk, for the individual collecting monies (holdup/robbery) and for taxpayers (shrinkage).
It is actually very funny that we can’t afford to secure the Villages’s cash. I’m sure there is a solution out there that costs less than $460,000.
They made a deal and I’m hoping the whole story will come out eventually. Who in the police dept. is/are being protected?
Yet again, taxpayers getting screwed to protect some mob/union crony(ies) in Village Hall and/or the PD. Put in smart meters like NYC and let people use credit cards… how are we doing on Tommy Boy’s restitution ? Is he paying us back every week? The guy is obviously a wise guy, and refused to rat out his minders in Village Hall.

Our prayers have been answered – Hallelujah!
Village Manager Roberta Sonnenfeld announced on Wednesday, 09/10/2014 the Village’s intent to lease a portion of the former Ken Smith Motors property, on Franklin Avenue near North Broad Street, for purposes of providing parking for the employees of businesses operating in Ridgewood’s Central Business District (CBD). It is believed that the proposed private/public partnership endeavor will free up many parking spaces on streets in the CBD for shoppers and restaurant goers.
No formal agreement had been reached as of Ms. Sonnenfeld’s announcement, but was revealed that Village parking enforcement agents will patrol the lot for violators, and that the Village will receive 10% of gross revenues. More details are expected to be released once a formal contract is signed. No word on the Village’s contribution, if any, to expenses such as building demolition, line striping, etc.
The announcement came with this advisory – the solution will not be long term in nature because the property owner wishes to develop it at a later date.

Ridgewood Nj, Are many sidewalks in the Central Business District (CBD) impassable to those with disabilities, particularly those confined to wheelchairs, walkers, and mobility scooters, because of sidewalk cafes, or is the problem limited to one or two locations?
During Wednesday evening’s Village Council Work Session, Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld promised that Village officials would soon conduct a walking tour of the CBD to assess the situation, and then recommend/suggest changes if and where they are appropriate.
This taxpayer wonders why no immediate action, in the form of summonses or written warnings, is being taken if a complaint has been filed about a specific location, and non-compliance with the sidewalk cafe ordinance has been verified?
All photos accompanying this post were taken on 9/4/2014, the day following Ms. Sonenfeld’s announcement.

Village to honor Roger Wiegand
Village to honor Roger Wiegand
to the Editor:
So many times growing up my brother and I would hear people say, “Rog – you should run for Mayor!” But that wasn’t Rog. He didn’t like the limelight. He preferred to be off to the side, watching, listening, educating and DOING.
He silently – and with no desire for thanks or praise — attended to things most of us assume others will address in our own communities. He would ride around town on his beloved bike, painting fire boxes so they would remain visible to the public. He reported to the Village Hall locations of non-functioning street lights. If he knew of someone in need, he would always take the time to offer them assistance or to just simply lend an ear.
Most importantly he was a fixture at every council meeting along with his longtime friend, Boyd Loving. He used to tell us that his goal was to keep the council “honest” on behalf of all the village residents.
To commemorate his lifelong dedication to Ridgewood and its citizens, there will be a plaque installed on the Village Council chamber podium on Friday, Sept. 5. We would like to invite the public to attend this event at Village Hall from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to help us celebrate such a unique and wonderful man. Our Uncle, friend to many, village champion.

Reader says its time for strict enforcement of the Village maintenance code
Reader says its time for strict enforcement of the Village maintenance code
I’m glad to see that this has come to the attention of our council.
If the owners do not respond, paper them with daily fines, and if appropriate, force a tax sale/auction if the property is in arrears.
I’d also like to see strict enforcement of the maintenance code that includes:
Bushes blocking the view at many corners in town.
Non-political signs on properties (from the dummies who live on the ‘cut through streets’= your lawn signs that are actually on Village property make this place look like shit. “Drive like your kids live here’ signs look like Hopper ave in waldwick’. Go ask the signal bureau to make a ‘slow children’ permanent sign. (your signs are illegal as they are not political)
Lots of sidewalks that need to be replaced.
Peeling paint on many homes.
The lazy residents that put their recyclables and yard waste cans out 4 days before pickup, and leave the stuff out there 3 days after.
And since the RPD does NOTHING about the cars parked on the street all night , the street sweepers cannot do their job in the morning and there is always crap on the streets blowing around.-hence the reason for this ordinance.
Do something about the barking dogs.( too many of you newbies think its ‘fashionable’ to ‘rescue’ a pitbull or junkyard dog mutt. I hope your homeowner’s insurance company is aware of it because sooner than later you will have a claim.
Every one of the lazy residents that gets a dog and puts up an invisible fence creates a territorial animal that barks and growls. Learn how to take care of an animal that needs social interaction. Its not a plant.

Few believed a pedestrian plaza in Times Square would work, let alone become a permanent fixture in the middle of New York City’s Crossroads of the World. Both happened
In 2008, the American Planning Association bestowed its Great Public Spaces honor to the Church Street Marketplace in Burlington, Vt. There, pedestrians freely walk on store-lined Church Street in an outdoor mall setting.

Newspapers rip Michelle O’s ‘cupcake cops’
Newspapers rip Michelle O’s ‘cupcake cops’

Kyle Olson
PITTSBURGH – There’s been little support for Michelle Obama’s regulations targeting school snacks, except from bobble-headed bureaucrats. Now the media is turning against them, too.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review opines in an editorial titled ‘Cupcake cops’:
Arrogant federal overreach dips to a new low with rules that threaten a time-honored tradition — school bake sales that provide sweet treats for students and ease taxpayer burdens by helping to pay for sports, cheerleading, band and other activities.
“Such micromanagement of community life is in keeping with the ‘government knows best’ agenda behind federal diktats on toilets’ water consumption and what light bulbs can and can’t be sold. Hopefully, bake sales are where Americans will draw a line — by telling government ‘hands off!’ when it comes to cookies and cupcakes that both sweeten and enrich the educational experience,” the paper concludes.

Artificial turf appears to cost less to maintain than grass, at least on Maple Field.
According to Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld, an estimated $121,500 was spent maintaining the turf on Maple Field during an eight-year period from 2006 to 2014.
