Reader says Time to Fully Vet Ridgewood BOE Candidate

BOE

Let’s vet this guy. He may be nice but what is his position on default 2% increase? Is he going to ask Fishbein to plan next year’s budget with 1%, like Morgan wanted to do, or will he also assume 2% is given?
What’s his position on 90 Million bond issue?
What’s his position on “Who is the boss, BOE vs Fishbein”? Since his kids are in the school system, he is very likely to give in to Fishbein’s demands.

We really need someone who can challenge Fishbein and not let him continue to spend money without any checks and balances.

Ridgewood Shortline Park and Ride Customers : Route 495 Project

25255 373668491620 6504783 n

Dear Valued Customers:

I’m sure many of you have heard about the upcoming NJ DOT restoration project on the route 495 helix. As such, we would like to take the opportunity to advise you on the information we currently have, and give you some insight on what we’ll be doing to ensure that our service is impacted as minimally as possible. NJ DOT has not finalized a start date but all indications are that the work will commence in Mid July and could potentially go on for 2 years. The dedicated bus lane will remain active through the life of the project, but regular vehicular traffic will be reduced from 4 lanes to 3 in either direction.

Although the bus lane will be open in the morning, we do anticipate delays getting to the bus lane at the junction of the NJ Turnpike, Route 3 and 495. Based on information received from our partners at the Port Authority of NY and NJ, it’s anticipated that traffic going into the City in the afternoon will be the most impacted by the restoration project. The Port Authority additionally anticipates that westbound traffic on 495 will be minimally impacted throughout the course of the day.

In anticipation of delays and potential additional ridership we are committed to the following:
The safety of our customers and staff will not be compromised with these changes
Improved real time information to be shared amongst operators and customers
Pooling of Coach USA regional resources to provide additional support on high passenger volume and gridlock days
Close engagement with our public partners so we can provide valuable feedback and potentially improve service levels

We’ll be sure to keep you updated as more information becomes available. In the interim we encourage you to visit restorenj495.com for additional information and updates.

Reader calls 3D Printer Gun Story a non-story ginned up for elected officials to grandstand on

This is a non-story ginned up for elected officials to grandstand on. The plans for the single-use 3D-printed hand gun, having been downloaded 1,000,000+ times already, are out on the internet for all to see through republishing sites. The dark web cares less about copyright than the gun laws of an individual country. As for being able to trace ownership, any cop will tell you that any gun used in the commission of a crime has been reported lost, stolen or destroyed by the registered owner. So, let’s talk about how dangerous to public welfare a weapon that can poorly fire a single bullet will be. Last month in Chicago there were about 25 people shot each week with already illegal guns and a total of 1,600 people shot this year in that one city. Why are we talking about this and not that?

We have a Race for the Ridgewood School Board

Ridgewood NJ, looks like Ridgewood and Glen Rock will  both have contested school board races in the 2018 . As previously reported on the Ridgewood blog Monday July 30th was the deadline for candidates to file to run for a board seat in November.

In the Village of Ridgewood, there is a contested race for the one three-year term. Cristopher Kaufman  has taken up the challenge ,running against incumbent President of the BOE Vincent Loncto .

Loncto a former chief financial officer was sworn in as the Boards choice in 2011 after board member Charles Reilly resigned earlier that year. Loncto was picked as a replacement to finish out Reilly’s term because of his strong financial background.

Kaufman we are told is running on the “Commitment-Understanding-Respect” slogan.

In Glen Rock, five people are currently vying for three, three-year terms. The candidates running are: Sharon Scarpelli, Bryon Torsiello, Gregory S. Franz, Robert C. Scherer, and Alisa Svider.

Ridgewood NJ, recent surveys reveal that 58% of Americans have been burgled, yet only 32% own home security systems.

Ooma Home [https://www.ooma.com/home-security/]— an innovative home security and monitoring platform, and creators of the Ooma Butterfleye security camera [https://www.ooma.com/home-security/butterfleye-security-camera/] — surveyed 1,000 Americans about their home security successes, woes, and desires.

Here’s what their response revealed:
24/7 live-streaming is America’s #1 most-wanted smart security feature at 58%: When asked what smart security features they desire most, 45% of those surveyed said advanced facial recognition features, while another 42% said automatic arming and disarming of the system as family members leave and come home.
25% of Americans have canceled a vacation due to home security concerns: 61% of respondents said they worry most about their residence being burgled whenever they are away rather than when they’re at home, and 38% said they worry about their pets being left alone.
33% of Americans who own home security systems have been burgled: When asked what could have put their house at risk, 55% said human error (e.g., their system doesn’t arm automatically). A smaller 33% say that their security camera didn’t notify them of the intrusion—inhibiting them from responding quickly.
The Ooma Butterfleye security camera provides 24/7 HD live-streaming, allowing owners to check-in on their homes from anywhere in their world from their mobile devices. It boasts numerous smart features, including facial recognition, offline recording during outages, and automatic arming and disarming.

New Jersey High School Students Flee to Other States for Higher Education

Ridgewood NJ, According to a story in Philly.com, New Jersey is one of the leading exporters of college students. The website quotes the National Center for Education Statistics in that, in 2016, 31,561 high school graduates left New Jersey for college, while only a mere 4,299 came to New Jersey from other states.

That flight is the largest net loss of students in the country. The New Jersey Business and Industry Association points out that New Jersey taxpayers pay an average of $20,000 per student per year for K-12 education, and, when students leave for college they often don’t come back.

Philly.com pointed out several possible reasons for the exodus for this: the lack of a major city to attract young people, the cost of higher education in New Jersey (the fourth most expensive in the nation), and the availability of many colleges in neighboring states. The problem has caught the attention of legislators, too; the commissioned a study to identify why only 45% of New Jersey students stay in state for college.

1 in10 New Jersey Residents is a Non-Citizen

Bike_Ridgewood_Public_Library_theridgewoodblog

August 1,2018

the staff of the Ridgewood

Hackensack NJ, New Jersey is home to about 900,000 residents who are not United States citizens . That’ equals about 1 in 10 people in the state, according to most recent estimates. Census figures put Ridgewood’s non-citizen population at about 2,000, or approximately 8 percent of the village’s 25,500 residents.

The Ridgewood Public Library even hosts six-week program meets twice weekly for 90-minute classes. It uses the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services booklet “Learn About the United States, Quick Civic Lessons for the Naturalization Test.”

The federal government is planning to have the 2020 Census ask people their citizenship status. Many elected officials and community advocates say such a question could threaten federal funding for states like New Jersey.

The simple solution would be to create more US citizens in order to safe guard Federal Funds .

The next Census Day is set for April 1, 2020, and a 2017 release from the U.S. Census Bureau identified the date for wording of all Census questions to be submitted to Congress as March 31 of this year. So for those fighting for a question on citizenship status to be excluded, the clock has been ticking for months already.

NJ TRANSIT BUS ROUTES FROM RIDGEWOOD TO DETOUR AS ROUTE 495 LANE CLOSURES SET TO BEGIN

Ridgewood-bus_terminal_theridgewoodblog

August 1,2018

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ,  To accommodate the lane closures necessary as part of the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s (NJDOT) rehabilitation of the Route 495 Bridge over Routes 1&9 and Paterson Plank Road in North Bergen, several NJ TRANSIT local bus routes will require detours.

The Exclusive Bus Lane (XBL) will be maintained weekday mornings (6 a.m. – 10 a.m.) throughout the construction.

Beginning Friday night, August 10, the 31st Street ramp from Kennedy Boulevard to Route 495 westbound will be closed with traffic detoured onto Paterson Plank Road, directly affecting NJ TRANSIT’s local service on 18 bus routes requiring detours in the afternoon and at night. A week later, on Friday, August 17, one lane of Route 495 in each direction will be closed, limiting the roadway capacity and causing severe congestion. The construction requiring detours is anticipated to last approximately two and a half years.

· Buses will operate their regular routing westbound along 31st Street through Union City the entire span of the day.

· All current Union City bus stops on 31st Street will be served, including both Bergenline Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard.

· Between 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. on weekdays, all NJ TRANSIT Buses using the 31st Street ramp will follow regular routes and continue to have access to Route 495 westbound.

· All buses between 1 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next morning will continue to use the 31st Street ramp but will be detoured onto Paterson Plank Road.

· Delays through Union City are anticipated due to increased traffic volume, and customers should plan accordingly for these delays.

Buses may encounter conditions that result in significant delays in the outbound direction during both the morning and evening peak periods.
