The Farm Dream vs. the 4 AM Reality Check

Screenshot 2026 06 10 093049

Social media has turned farming into a major aspiration. Cottagecore aesthetics dominate Instagram and TikTok, showing golden-hour harvests, freshly kneaded sourdough and photogenic chickens. A 2020 Gallup poll in the US found the share of people who’d prefer to live in the country jumped from 39% in 2018 to 48%, with the pandemic widely cited as the driver.

The appeal of rural living isn’t just an American story. In England, internal migration data shows more people moving into rural areas than leaving them, and UK retailers have noted growing interest from people taking on small plots of just a few acres.

However, these curated feeds skip what real farmers face daily. They don’t show the predawn livestock checks in driving rain, fencing repairs in frozen mud, or lambing shifts that run for 18 hours. There’s also the financial reality. Income from small-scale farming is modest and unpredictable, and many hobby holdings make very little once costs are taken out.

UAE, the United Arab Emirates is testing drones that can make clouds produce rain by giving them an electric shock. Cloud-seeding technology is already used in the country, but the UAE wants to generate more rain. The country only averages 100mm of rain per year. In 2017, the government provided $15m (£10.8m) for nine different rain-enhancement projects.

Ridgewood NJ, Groundhog Day or Ground-Hog Day,is a popular tradition celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2.It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog (Deitsch: Grundsau, Grunddax, Dax) emerging from its burrow on this day sees a shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks, and if he does not, due to cloudiness, spring season will arrive early.

Punxsutawney Phil sees shadow; six more weeks of winter

Punxsutawney Phil , sees shadow, six more weeks of winter

February 2,2018
the staff of the Ridgewood

Punxsutawney PA, Punxsutawney Phil, America’s most famous groundhog, and foremost weather rodent saw his shadow Friday morning, predicting six more weeks of winter.

With Groundhog Day festivities well underway in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, the groundhog known as Phil saw his shadow Friday morning, which, according to legend, means another six weeks of winter.

The 20-pound groundhog’s predictions have been accurate 39 percent of the time since the first Groundhog Day in 1887, according to StormFax.com. Phil has done slightly better in recent years, getting the forecast right 46 percent of the time since 1988.

However the average weather man or women prediction fairs far worse predicting 25 or the last 6 snow storms .

Jason Vigorito gives us some history (I’m biased on this one since it’s my hometown!) On this day in 1887, Groundhog Day, featuring a rodent meteorologist, was celebrated for the first time at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring. In 1993, the movie “Groundhog Day”, starring Bill Murray, popularized the usage of “groundhog day” to mean something that is repeated over and over. Today, tens of thousands of people converge on Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney each February 2 to witness Phil’s prediction. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club hosts a three-day celebration featuring entertainment and activities. Also as a sidenote, the Punxsutawney Area School District is the only district to have the day off as a holiday, since most of the students played hooky anyway before the policy went into effect.
