Wyckoff NJ, Orange & Rockland today warned the public about a phony-bill payment scheme in which imposters pose as utility company representatives and call customers, demanding immediate payment for what they fraudulently claim are delinquent electric and gas bills.

Unsuspecting utility customers across the nation, most recently at in Orange & Rockland’s service territory, have been bilked by these bogus claims by crooks who insist on payment the day of the contact.
Here is how the scam works:

A Spanish or English-speaking individual posing as a utility company employee calls customers saying their service would be disconnected if they do not make an immediate payment using a prepaid debit card. In some cases, the call is pre-recorded.
Customers are told to purchase a Green Dot MoneyPak at a pharmacy or convenience store, use cash to put money onto the card, and then provide the number on the card to the person who called them.
Customers are advised that if they do not immediately call back and provide the MoneyPak information, their service will be turned off that day.
Typically, after the customer provides the MoneyPak number, the scammer steals the customer’s money by transferring the funds from the MoneyPak to a prepaid card and then cashing it in at an ATM.
O&R urges anyone who is contacted in this fashion to break off contact with the crooks and call O&R Customer Service at 1-877-434-4100.
If you are contacted by someone who says they represent O&R and you wish to verify their identity, either ask for their photo ID card, if they are at the door, or call O&R at 1-877-434-4100 to verify their identity and the nature of their business with you. Orange & Rockland employees are trained to cooperate with this request and happy to comply with an identity verification request.
Remember, when in doubt, hang up the phone or break off contact, and call O&R at 1-877-434-4100 to verify that the person you are dealing with is an Orange & Rockland employee conducting legitimate business.

Glen Rock NJ, we have had many reports of downed wires today including a death in Franklin Lakes . Just received this message from Glen Rock Police . Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not touch anything that it might be in contact with. Cones & police line tape has been deployed, it is impossible for officers to remain at these locations.

Heavy, wet snow brought down large trees, branches and wires at numerous locations in town. Electric service crews worked through the night and will continue to work as safely and as quickly as possible. The restoration process will likely take several days given the damage from falling trees that will need to be cleared.

Wyckoff Superintendent of Schools Speaks on the Parkland School Shooting

wyckoff

Dear Parents of Wyckoff Families,
The shooting and killing of innocent people, especially children in Parkland, Florida, Sandy Hook, Connecticut, or anywhere else, should shake us to our core and make our hearts break. On most mornings in Wyckoff, New Jersey, as we go off to school or work, we anticipate that we will be reunited with our loved ones in the evening. Tragically, for the families in Parkland, Florida this was not the case. Increasingly, even as statistics tell us that we may be safer than ever before, we feel less safe, more exposed, and more vulnerable.
As parents, we know that a shooting that occurs in a school makes us all feel even more vulnerable and helpless. Chief David Murphy and I wanted you to be aware that over the past several years, the Wyckoff Police Department and the Wyckoff School District have worked closely together to improve the overall safety and security in our schools. In addition to increased patrols, daily walk-throughs by patrol officers, table-top drills with our Building Crisis Teams, and monthly security drills, we communicate regularly at the administrative level on a variety of issues pertaining to safety and security. Our school staff and the Wyckoff Police Department are also trained in using specific technology to ensure efficient and dynamic communication in the event of an emergency. Additionally, we share the services of the Ramapo Indian Hills School District Security Coordinator, Charles J. Wolff, a retired Lieutenant with the New Jersey State Police and a Certified Homeland Protection Professional.
The Parkland, Florida case, like many other school incidents over the years, had fingerprints that were signs of possible future trouble. It is critical to look out for the well-being of each other and to that end, we would stress two main ideas: First, talk with your children about their own safety and the safety of others. If they have a concern or hear something of concern for others, she/he should find a teacher or counselor with whom to share that information. Second, if you as a parent hear something disturbing from your child, report it to the school or the Police Department. We always look into these situations. Simply, if you see or hear something, say something.
The well-being of the students in Wyckoff will always be our primary concern. The District is prepared to assist any child who may need support. We are looking for signs of distress in the children and suggest that you do the same. If you have questions, please reach out to me, Chief Murphy, or your child’s Principal.
Sincerely yours,
Richard D. Kuder Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
