Franklin Lakes NJ, a Hebrew school in Bergen County, along with several synagogues and Jewish institutions across the U.S., was subjected to fake bomb threats on Sunday. This incident adds to the concerning trend of rising antisemitism observed since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war.
The Barnert Temple school in Franklin Lakes, specifically, received a local threat, but authorities determined it to be a hoax, according to Elizabeth Rebein, a spokeswoman for the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. Unfortunately, no further details were provided, and attempts to obtain more information from school officials and local police were unsuccessful.
Similar false alarms were reported nationwide. In Mercer County, an emailed bomb threat was sent to a house of worship on Sunday morning, affecting various religious institutions across the state. One such email reached an unidentified house of worship in Hopewell Township 9:43 a.m., indicating the presence of “multiple explosives” within the building set to detonate within a few hours. Although the threat was not deemed credible, the building was evacuated, and a search revealed no explosive devices.
Hopewell Township Police Lt. Louis Vastol stated that the email was distributed to multiple locations throughout the state and country by an unknown person. The incident is under investigation by local police, along with federal, state, and county agencies.
Another incident was reported at Congregation Etz Chaim in Monroe Township last Sunday morning, where officers found no explosives during their investigation.
