Glen Rock Home Damaged by Lightening Strike

Glen Rock NJ, an explosion reported to be electrical in nature rocked a single family home located in the 400 block of Prospect Street, Glen Rock on Thursday morning, 08/12. No injuries were reported in the blast, but property damage in the form of shattered windows and missing roof shingles was reported. Glen Rock Police, Ridgewood Police, Fair Lawn Fire Department, and Glen Rock Fire Department units & personnel responded to the incident. A representative of PSE&G’s Gas Division was also on the scene. UPDATE: Damage is now reported to be as a result of an overnight lightning strike, not an explosion.

Worker Injured after Falling into Construction Pit in Fair Lawn

Fair Lawn NJ, Members of the Fair Lawn Heavy Rescue Squad were dispatched to the 3500 block of Berdan Avenue, Fair Lawn early Wednesday evening, 08/11, to assist Fair Lawn EMS personnel rescue an adult male worker who was injured after falling into an open pit at a construction site. At least two (2) ladders, heavy roping, a Stokes basket, and plenty of muscle were used to extricate the victim from the pit’s bottom in order that he could be easily transferred to a waiting ambulance. Fair Lawn Police was also on the scene of the mishap.

The Invasive and Highly Destructive Emerald Ash Borer has arrived in Ridgewood

Ridgewood NJ, Heather A. Mailander the Village Manager sent out and email yesterday defining the destructive nature of the Emerald Ash Bore . The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a small (1/2 inch), invasive insect currently destroying Ash trees in many regions of North America. It was first discovered in Michigan 20 years ago and has killed tens of millions of Ash trees throughout the midwest. EAB is working its way up the East Coast, and is now very active in Ridgewood. EAB kills 100% of untreated ash trees.

The Consumer Price Index Rose at a 5.4% Annual Rate

Ridgewood NJ, according to the Bureau of labor Statistics  the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.5 percent in July on a seasonally adjusted basis after rising 0.9 percent in June.  Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 5.4 percent before seasonal adjustment. The indexes for shelter, food, energy, and new vehicles all increased in July and contributed to the monthly all items seasonally adjusted increase.

Hoboken NJ, On August 5thHoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla publicly announced his offer of future employment for a newly created role to a sitting Hoboken City Councilwoman who was potentially opposing his slate in the upcoming general election.  The new position being offered would commence after both the mayor’s and the councilwoman’s first terms end on December 31st, 2021.  According to Hoboken Councilwomen Jen Giattino (Council Vice President) and Tiffanie Fisher, this violates multiple New Jersey ethics, civil service and criminal codes and they have requested in writing to the Office of Attorney General and the Local Finance Board to investigate the actions of the Hoboken mayor including violations of the following codes:

Trenton NJ, an alliance of New Jersey advocacy organizations working with impacted state residents announced intervention in an ongoing lawsuit to stop the implementation of a recently passed state law exempting non-profit hospitals from property taxation even if for-profit business is conducted on hospital property. Plaintiff interveners NJ Citizen Action and the American Federation of Teachers NJ (AFTNJ) argue the law violates the State Constitution’s uniformity and exemption clauses.

Ridgewood Teens Join Other Teens Volunteering for New Archdiocese of Newark Service Program

Ridgewood NJ,  Dozens of young Archdiocese of Newark parishioners volunteered some of their vacation time this summer to assist with maintenance projects at sites throughout Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union counties. Their efforts were part of “Days in the Diocese,” a new program presented by the Archdiocese’s Office for Youth & Young Adult Ministry that offered one-day service immersion experiences to teens enrolled in a parish youth group or Confirmation program.
