Qualities to Look For When Buying a Vacuum Cleaner

There are two key factors when it comes to keeping the floors in your home spotless: no shoes in the house, and a quality vacuum cleaner. Even the most normal everyday family activities can cause a lot of mess that requires daily vacuuming. Finding the ideal vacuum can be a tricky job because it needs to fit your general household cleaning needs and also be powerful enough for tougher, more specialized jobs.

With the right choice of vacuum cleaner, you will be able to clean up any mess that your little children or pets can cause. Here are some qualities you should look for when buying a vacuum cleaner.

1. Bag Capacity

There are vacuum cleaners that come with bags and others which are bagless, and each type of vacuum has its own set of pros and cons. The experts from CleanersExpert.com explain that bagless vacuums can save you significant money on purchasing bags in the long run, but they do require more filters that will need regular cleaning or replacing. Vacuum cleaners with bags have some benefits in terms of hygiene as the bag is included to make sure that dust stays in the vacuum and can be disposed of properly.

It is especially beneficial if you have asthma or allergy problems because emptying the bin of a bagless model can be irritating to your allergies. If you have a big home with multiple rooms, you should consider adding a larger bag to your vacuum as well.

2. Multi-Floor Surface Cleaning Capabilities

The floor surfaces in your home will play a big role in choosing the right vacuum cleaner as different models have different capabilities. Generally speaking, for homes with carpets, an upright vacuum cleaner is a good choice as they get rid of dirt and stains on these surfaces smoothly. However, a canister vacuum will most likely need a motorized brush roll and height adjustment options to effectively vacuum your carpets.  If you need a vacuum for kitchens or other rooms that have hard floors, a canister style vacuum is a great option as it is maneuverable for working quickly around furniture. If you have a combination of both types, try them out and see what works best on the different surfaces in your home.

3. Cord/Cordless

Part of the price tag of a vacuum cleaner depends on how versatile it is, and one element that plays a part in this is the cord length. A cord that measures at least 50 feet in length will allow you to clean even the biggest room in your home.

No one wants to spend time unplugging and replugging their vacuum cleaner while moving it around the room. If your house is not that big, you might be able to get by with a cordless vacuum, which can allow for a quicker clean up. Cordless vacuums are available in both upright and canister styles.

4. Noise Levels

With all vacuums, there is a certain amount of expected noise that is generated, but if your vacuum cleaner is making unfamiliar noises, there may be something wrong with it. Typically, the more heavy-duty the machine is, the louder it is. However, for houses or offices where quieter sound levels are required, there are vacuums that are designed to minimize the noise as much as possible. If you want to clean while your baby is asleep, check specifications before buying.

5. Weight

Weight is an extremely important factor to consider if you have multiple floors to clean, especially for homes or apartments where there is no need for larger cleaners. However, larger and heavier vacuums may come in handy for bigger areas as their storage compartments allow you to store more dirt and dust in one device. Although it may not sound very cost-effective, you may even want to consider getting a different vacuum cleaner for each floor if you have a big house with multiple floors.

6. Head Attachments

There are many different attachments which can be used for different rooms in your home and for different floor surfaces. Especially if you have a lot of furniture in your home or your rooms are irregularly shaped, you will need some accurate head attachments to get into those nooks and crannies where dust collects. Upright vacuum cleaners are difficult to use in spaces with tight corners or lots of furniture so that is a big factor to consider. There are some hybrid upright models which also have an extra vacuum hose which you can use for these difficult to reach places so do your research before buying.

Finding the perfect vacuum cleaner depends on a variety of factors, from the floor surfaces of your home to the number of different head attachments. Having a great vacuum can seriously reduce your cleaning time so it is always a worthwhile investment.
