George Washington

USING CASE STUDIES TO TEACH

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, at the November 18th BOE meeting RHS Social Studies Teacher Freddie LaFemina spoke about this workshop that utilizes original case studies on American history that are specifically created for the classroom, allowing for an understanding of both the case study method and a deeper knowledge about American history.  and Civics. The model was started at Harvard Business School. The slide portion of the presentation may be viewed here.

Interesting idea , but the kids still have to understand the basics in order to have the ability to discuss various ideas and look at events in the proper perspective . Without back ground facts these sessions can easily turn in to BS sessions . Aside from the fact that the process can easily manipulated and one sided .

  1. One sided? I’ll say. Did anyone notice the actual case examples?

    – Martin Luther King and the Struggle for Black Voting Rights (1965
    – Democracy and Women’s Rights in America: The Fight over the ERA (1982)
    – Manufacturing Constituencies: Race and Redistricting in North Carolina, 1993

Full curriculum here includes such important progressive talking points as “Citizens United”: https://www.hbs.edu/case-method-project/curriculum/Pages/default.aspx

I fear that the chances of these cases being presented without heavy progressive spin are pretty slim

  2. Propaganda and watering down (and rewriting) of history.
    .
I think there was a book about this written by George Orwell… (or maybe it was Saul Alinsky)
    .
Your dim-witted RW neighbors will wholeheartedly support this.
