Ridgewood Board of Education Survey Receives Only 20 Responses ?

Ridgewood NJ, at Monday night’s Ridgewood Board of Education meeting, Dr. Gorman and board members speculated that the reason that their last survey only received 20 responses was that parents completely trusted administrators and were very content. Perhaps, parents are busy and overwhelmed and have no time to read complicated emails.
In case parents just missed the survey, let me explain the issue. The district received nearly $2m from the federal government to help students and families and schools struggling to recover from remote education. How should they spend that money? On tutoring, mental health initiatives, and summer school? Or on air filters and substitute teachers? Let the board know. The budget has to be finalized by November 24th ( Ridgewood voters no longer vote of the school budget) .

The American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act provides $122 billion in funding to states and school districts to facilitate the reopening and sustain the safe operation of schools.

At the November 1, 2021 Board of Education meeting, an overview of ARP ESSER III allocations and allowable uses were presented, along with recommended spending for the main grant and the four sub-grants. We invite the public to review the presentation and provide public comments.

Public comments may be submitted using the form below. Public comments may also be made during the public comment periods of the November 15, 2021 Board of Education Regular Public Meeting.

The write-in public comment period will end at 12:00 PM on Wednesday,  November 17, 2021.

  1. They plan to give this grant money to teachers as “overtime” for attending trainings. That will somehow fix the learning gap from last 18 months.

It can be better spent in learning pods and help kids catch-up!

  2. A post on It Takes a Ridgewood Village clearly shows that a BOE member who thought many didn’t reply because they “trust” our school district admin is wrong. As stated by residents in last nights public comments, many didn’t reply because they had no idea where the survey was or how to locate it or that it was even important. Again a complete disconnect between what is happening in the community and our district leaders and certain BOE members.

    1. this is what happens when you don’t vote on the school budget , expect more of it

  3. Let’s spend more money on Late Start. An absolutely useless initiative to further coddle young adults and leave them completely unprepared for the world ahead. If the district looked at consistent problems and found solutions, like not adding grades into the gradebook until the quarter is ending or over and having students panic as they watch their GPAs tank, a lot of anxiety would be reduced. Problem-solved for FREE. We don’t need $20,000 on a consultant or to change traffic patterns or the schedules of hundreds of staff members to fix some of the mental health issues running rampant especially in the high school.

  4. I knew nothing about it…I would have responded for sure.

  5. I just read that Morristown HS is going remote again.

  6. OR, they just felt it was pablum for the masses to vent, and the results would be noted (with great concern) and ignored.

  7. Late Start, seriously??
45 minutes reduction in teachers time every day is equivalent to 8100 minutes or 135 hours. If they delay the afternoon times by 15 minutes, that’s still 30 minutes less per day for teachers.
That’s 13 working days. They already only work for 180 days in a year.
Are we going to reduce salaries for working 13 days less?
Who is going to make up for the lost instruction time for these kids?

  9. “Late Start, seriously??………”

You certainly did a lot of math on this comment.

Care to do the math for all the unpaid overtime teachers do? Lesson plans, grading papers, etc.?

    No?

Then shut the hell up about salaries.

  11. Well, that unpaid work is part of their current salary structure already. They are getting paid a certain amount, and in return, they have agreed to do some amount of work and everyone is in agreement.

The new proposal will reduce 30 minutes of work time every day, by delaying the school start time by 45 minutes and extending the school end time by 15 minutes. For 180 days, that’s 90 hours.

That 90 hours reduction in working hours must be reflected in salary?? If not, why not?

  13. I’d like to leave “work” at 3pm every day
I’d like to have ever imaginable holiday off
I’d like to have every snow day off
I’d like to have a ‘cadillac’ health care plan for my family with minimal copay (better than most residents get at their job)
I’d like to have my children attend my employers schools in a better town at no cost to me.
I’d like to have summers off (lets not forget teachers annual pay is for less than 10 months of ‘work’)
Again I have ZERO interest in being a teacher.. but quit bitching you got it good here
Teachers in places like Paterson have it tough

  14. The money can’t be returned to the taxpayers, because it didn’t come from them. It came from debt your grandchildren will need to pay back, along with another 30 trillion dollars.

  15. Prior post is right – the $ was confiscated by corrupt politicians from the entire population via inflation. That’s why taxpayers have no say. Teachers union would use it to add yet another perk to their portfolio. Know your place, peasants!

  16. 90 HOURS REDUCTUON in working time, when they already work for only
180 days in a year? Wtf????

  17. Certainly, our Mr. Dani has a winning solution for this conundrum.

    1. nay you gave away your right to vote on the budget , too bad

  18. I never saw the survey. If I had I would have filled it out. In my job, when I notice I’m not getting a response to an email, survey, etc. I follow up…
