Board Meeting Report to Board: Opening of School

Opening of School

Cheryl Best, Alfredo Aguilar and I visited all the schools during the first day. In addition, K-12 administrators, Kim Turner, Robert Bell and Chris McCullough also visited each building. From all reports the opening of school went very smoothly. Buses actually ran pretty smoothly.

NOTE: This is subject to change as we determine new students and withdrawals.

  1. You mean there are less students this year? Then why did the BOE budget RISE 2% to $100 million? What happened to the inflow of high density housing families that were going to overwhelm our schools? Don’t tell me this is the same urban planner who said the East Rutherford Super Bowl was going to be a boon for CBD businesses in Ridgewood?

  2. Many families kept their kids in Belmar…they were waiting for Labor Day to occur before sending little Tyler and Isabella to school.

  3. LOL 10:13am, yes you’ve got to be right on that one. There’s also the arms race underway in which parents are holding their future CEOs and White House Press Secretaries back rather than expose them to fair competition from children their own age.

  4. What a crock. We see away that week. How about numbers from the third week of school? I thought the board of education couldn’t get involved in this.

  5. They hold the kids back for sports. check youtube.

Freshmen parents are pimping their kids out for lax with semi-professional videos. It has to be the parents because they list the FRESHMAN’S gpa and classes completed.

What would happen os the kids do not get into the schools that their parents have selected? the great Santini is alive and well. I pity the children.

  6. It’s called “red-shirting”, hold Johnny back a year so he can dominate smaller kids

  7. I had a boy who was involved in sports at RHS; he was a year older than most because he was held back in kindergarten. I’ve put up with more than a few nasty comments from parents who thought I held him back for sports. To this day, I really resent anyone commenting or questioning the decision to keep him back (mine with the schools recommendation). People can be really cruel. I would have given any thing have a “normal” child. Maybe you folks should just MYOB.

  8. Ridgewood ELEMENTARY schools had less kids on the firest day. Ridgewood MIDDLE and HIGH schools had pretty decent increases. So mom and dad kept the little kids home for Labor Day. Older kids can’t afford that luxury.

  9. Somerville “lost” 21 kids….actually last year they had 5 5th grade classes…a “bubble” if you will.

    BFMS increased by 13 kids.
